Why Israel and Iran are enemies | Mapped Out

  • On April 13, 2024, Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israel, vowing retaliation for a deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria, reportedly by Israeli forces. It was the Islamic Republic's first direct attack on its bitter enemy. Prior to the strikes, Iran and Israel had been engaged in a years-long shadow war - and attacks by the Iran-backed militant Islamist group Hamas on Israel in October 2023 had moved the conflict to a whole new level. What are the roots of the Iranian-Israeli conflict? And what role does Israel's number one ally, the US, play in it?

1:15 What the Iranian regime’s threat to destroy Israel actually means
7:01 How Israel is responding to Iran’s threats

To be fair, this video DOES mention the deposition of the Shah. It doesn't explain how the Shah got into place and the resentment that caused, which might have been useful. But every video about history has to start somewhere or else you'd be going back forever. This never claimed to be a comprehensive history of Iran, but you are correct that that is valuable background in terms of Iranian resentment of U.S. interference in the region.

As an Iranian I would like to thank DW for its comprehensive report on this. However one thing that was not mentioned in this report was the internal problems within Iran as there have been many bloody protests and riots against the government within Iran over the last two years, so other than the fact that the current government has been trying to spend billions of dollars to fund its ideological goals, it has also been trying to use this conflict in the region as a means of distraction and diverting the attention of people from real internal issues facing the country.

If Iran wanted to have their economy better for the short term it would make deals with the west and Israel. That way the protest would be over. That way the people would be more pro government (short term)
Iran's goal is international freedom, & is willing to have its economy in sacrifice for it.

Incredibly, you did not mention the recent agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia brokered by China that led even to an exchage of ambassadors and put and end to Iran's isolation, nor did you mention Syria position nor the fact that Israel owns 100-200 nuclear bombs. More, you reported and used the US and EU definitions of IRAN as they were "the truth", while they're obviously negative.
So your storytelling is very partial, in my opinion.

This video is not good enough to explain how much the issue is complicated.
The Israelis-Iranian relationship is far more complex than this document briefly mentioned. For example, the Israeli ambassador to South Korea once said to Koreans "One day, we will have a peaceful relationship with Iran, I am sure. For we have no issue or argument with Iran as a country. Maybe around that time, the Korean peninsula would be united." The Israeli diplomat might have lied to Koreans, but I believe this comment shows that the Israeli foreign policy establishment sees their relationship with Iran in a multi-dimensional way.
And Iranians are not as simple and homogeneous as this video describes. They have a sophisticated and institutionalised governance system. Some may be religious and ideological but others must be practical and competitive. That is why the Iranian regime managed to survive even though there was and is a lot of pressure to destroy it.
To sum up, my point is this: do not underestimate how far both Israelis and Iranians are capable and how complicated each of their internal societies are. It's not that much simple. If it were, it would have been much easier to deal with this issue.

@@72Yonatan Buddy, you're repeating yourself, you are only describing the current situation, not the reasons behind it.
It is the equivalent of saying that North Korea became the enemy of the US after it got a communist government instead of explaining that it was initially rooted in the US' containment strategy opposing global communism and currently is based North Korea's aims of achieving nuclear capabilities to secure it's own survival, with a destabilising influence in a geopolitically important region for the US.
The question remains, unanswered by both the video and you, why did Iran's geopolitical priorities change drastically and why did they get involved in a conflict with Israel that they are a natural participant in?

The US kept this brutal dictator in power for 23 years until he was overthrown. This is why Iranians hate Americans. Israel is the US's proxy in the Middle East which is why they are against Israel.

I would addressed why no one seems to like the Palestinians. Yes, many people are protesting the war in Gaza but the response from other Arab countries has been pretty mild given the devastation. Beyond rhetoric, there has been virtually no response from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States. Iran doesn't seem to doing any thing more than sticking a finger in the eye of Israel and the United States. Even Hezbollah who one would think would rise up has only launched a few token missiles. It seems as though most would like the Palestinians to just disappear. It took a non-Arab country, South Africa, to bring forth a charge of genocide to the International Court of Justice.

calling for the destruction of a state is not against the main religion of the state. People really need to understand this before trying to explain a conflict.

It is interesting to note that Palestine is neither mentioned in the Quran, nor the Bible, or the Talmud, or the the Assyrian Prism of Records, or the Chinese Jih-li Records of the Royal Imperial Court of the Emperor of Zhongguo [China], nor the Kebra Nagast Records of the Royal Imperial Court of the Negusa Nagast (Emperor) of Abbysinia (Ethiopia), or any of the ancient world records. So when did it start existing? So many others are mentioned including Edom which was destroyed, Jordan, Moab (Petra), Syria, Seba (Sheba), Egypt, Persia land of the Medes, Lebanon, but no mention of Palestine. So when did it start existing?

I find your videos very informative without taking sides in my opinion. I was wondering if you cover geopolitical stories in Africa. Anglone Crisis / war in Cameroon for example..

not taking side!! did you watch the video?
it was a video which shows iran hate isreal but did not talk about the reason for this hatered? no one just hate other without any reason? isreal is the watchdog of usa in middle east. and they pushed for afganistan war and then iraq war. they also have neuclear weapon which is suppsed to bring sanction but it did not.
this video also forget to mention in 1953 Iranian coup d'état, known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup d'état, was the U.S.- and British-instigated, Iranian army-led overthrow of the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in favor of strengthening the monarchical rule of the shah. so iranian revolution just ousted the usa puppet. that's also a reason why they hate usa and their most important ally isreal.
