A Sacrifice in the Mountains of the Philippines (The Tradition of Cañao)

- We were invited to witness a Cañao by Omar, a member of the Ibaloi community. Cañao is a general term used to describe traditional thanksgiving rituals or festivities across the Cordilleras. The term cañao and its practice (including the attendant food and symbolisms) may vary from one indigenous community to another.
As an open event with no guest list, the generosity of the community shines through during a cañao. It is believed that the more generous one is, the more Kabunian and the spirits of the ancestors will be pleased, resulting in favor especially for the host family.
The ritual showcases the Indigenous Peoples’ high regard for spirituality, honoring their ancestors, sharing one’s blessings with the community, and taking in the simple joys of life-a time-honored tradition that has existed long before the colonizers reached the highlands.
It is an integral part of the unique Cordilleran identity. This documentary hopes to spread the importance of ancient traditions as this is what connects us Filipinos to our roots. Stay tuned for the second part of this sacred ceremony on our next video.

Thank you so much for sharing this honored tradition. My Mom brought this tradition to the states and as a young child I never knew the significance of it. It is heartwarming now as an adult to understand its origins and meanings. I’m sure my mother told me, but as an immigrant child wanting to “fit in”, I didn’t want to know. I appreciate how FEATR’s content and presentation educate and endear those of us who want to know our Filipino history. Well done FEATR! 👏🏽
You cannot openly do cañao in the US as free as we do it here in in te Cordillara region, your mother's origin.

I love how you guys presented the documentary with no censorship and such, it makes the immersion worth and feels like I'm watching it live; for some ppl I know that the pig carcass may disgust them but I salute the team not holding back it makes the experience worth it and informative.

My family is from Kapangan. Paternal great grandfather was a “Bentres(z) and my maternal great grandmother was a Fianza. We are all very proud of our roots and where we came from.
I cannot be any more proud and grateful for this feature since it shows the traditional of our tribe. Going to show my mom, our family and my husband (who is American) on how beautiful this episode is! Truly grateful. 🙏🏼

I had a collage friend by the name of Lilia Fianza from Itogon...Her father used to be a politician .. They are down to earth people...I missed them.
@@ImeldaEdra-db6lo who was her father? Since I left the Philippines in the mid 80s, there’s a lot of relatives I have never met (Fianzas are a big group so it’s no surprise that people/ family have not met 😆) . I know we have relatives in Itogon but am not well acquainted with them.

@@sammiefianza2377 Hi! So my grandmother was a Fianza on her mother’s side. Her father was a Bentrez. A lot of my Bentrez relatives still lives in Kapangan. The Fianzas that I grew up with live in Baguio. A lot of them still live there.

This is one of the best vlog-documentaries you’ve featured so far. Proud there was some Filipino tribes, besides the Muslims in the south, that were able to resist being colonized by others to keep their own governing and religious beliefs

One of the surviving pre-colonial culture we have as Pilipino. Most of our pre-colonial history and culture as been forgotten and destroyed by spaniards. Masarap makakita that there are still surviving traditions.
Panong hindi nawawala, e karamihan ng pinoy walang pagpapahalaga sa History, kung meron man ikinahihiya.
I've never seen solibao, kawil and those traditional jars in their natural habitat for a very long time and I just found out that these days crisp bills are offered instead of antique coins. --this makes my Igorot heart so happy. I went to a lot of these when my mother takes us to her hometown , Sadanga. the men in bahags go around carrying a bilao and distribute the watwat with their bare hands.

I remembered when I was first time to go in Baguio.@Tuding Benguet, April 2009..xempre sikami nga ilocano sabali ladta ti nakasanayan mi about ti panagparti ti baboy etc.. first time mi ajay kadwak idi nga ag attend ti cañao, Ajay sukatan da jy natay from the petso..pirmi buteng mi that time kc di namin inakala na gnun pla😁 then Eating time na..heto ung kwento ko na first time ko tlga at never ko makakalimutan na experience ko sa cañao...
Nong time na kumain na kmi.. I was shock kc sa mga karne na nkalagay sa plato.subrang malalaki 2 hiwa na sinlaki ng palad ko..at ung Dugo na 3 piraso at ung inihaw na sangkatutak... instead na kakain kmin ng kasama ko tawa kmi ng tawa kc ndi namin akalain na ganon..tapos ung boss nmin non binigyan pa kmi ng plastic at ilagay daw nmin ung baon nmin🤣 Kya nagtoroan kmi tlga sa kasama ko🤣 pagdating nmin sa bhay ng boss ko.sabi nya kau mga ilocano iloto na ninyo Yan at ulamin din ninyo lahat2🤣🤣 at ayon hiniwa ko ng maninipis at niluto ko sa adubo🤣

I hope someday you can show similar rituals among other groups like the Aeta, the Sulodnon, the Lumad, the Tagbanwa, the Ivatan, the Ati, etc. I'm particularly interested in boat-blessing rituals, which I don't think has ever been documented. Also there are numerous descriptions of ancient rituals in both Spanish and American sources. Among the Itneg there was a spirit boat ritual, where they build tiny rafts with offerings and float them down the river. I wonder if it survives to the modern day.
It's good to know that we still have our native igorots preserved tradition here in the Philippines.. ❤ love this video Featr !👌
This one form could be the simplest, I guess. Although there are really variations.
We had one last March and we considered it a "grand Cañao" because of the number of days and the numerous preparations... About 3 main days, and cleaning a day after plus after 7 days again... Butchering around 10 pigs (not sure), 2 cows, 1 carabao, and 1 horse. Until now we still have watwat left in the fridge (for real).
A few may never understand the culture and the traditions but we just hope for respect.🤗

one word that describes this is - community - try to do this in greater Manila, i doubt people will be open to welcoming strangers into their area (not saying all but there is a huge portion of us who will be reluctant) also, sad to say, social classes. it's true.

Misconception nang mga taga-baba about Cañao is placing a curse on somebody or sumpa gaya nang sinasabi nang Elders dito sa baba. Which was far from opposite and nakaka-upset din kase I didn't know until I grew older and experienced being around peers from Benguet knowing it na ganito pala ang tunay na Cañao.

There are very similar rituals among the Lumad here in Mindanao. One that sticks to me from childhood is the house blessing ritual, where we characteristically have to eat unseasoned cooked chicken (because spirits don't like salt or spices or strong smells).
Marami din Ang taga cordilleras Dyan sa Mindanao na nag migrate...
@@mycutiepets4640 They were local Lumad (specifically Manobo) customs. Not influenced by Cordilleran migrants. We had very similar pre-colonial beliefs throughout the Philippines. It's just the majority lowland populations lost the majority of it when they converted to Christianity and Islam, leaving only pockets of animistic tribes in the highlands and remote islands who preserved their traditions.
@@mycutiepets4640 There is a wrong perception that Cordillerans were animistic. That is not actually the case. Cordillerans have a monoeistic creator God called Kabunyan. May be considered as paganistic back in the day because of the different rituals, but never worship trees or stones.

Very powerful. A celebration I've only heard in stories, now to watch one, it all comes together. I'm glad that these are still happening despite the attention to urban life.
I hope someday you can document indigenous or traditional celebrations of the lowlands, and Visayas/Mindanao mountain regions as well. These are all worlds that do not get the spotlight they need.

Tapos sabi nila hindi daw kami purong Filipino kasi ang mga ninuno ko ay from an American and Japanese descent. I was student in Baguio when one of my classmates said that I'm not really a Pinoy nakakasakit nang damdamin honestly pero as I grew up saka ko narealize ang halaga ng kultura at tradisyung kinalakhan ko...eh anu ngayon kung hindi ako purong Pinoy gaya ng sabi nila..basta ang mahalaga alam ko kung sino at ano ako😊😊😊 a simple person from the Bago Tribe
