Dianne wrote this herself She writes a lot of original jazz. She is just amazing. She has the most wonderful phrasing and diction. She also uses a lot of Afro-Cubsm rhythm s, and a lot of jazz standards. She's wonderful
Anybody can... sing a song. Nobody can SANG a song like she sings this without having some connection to it. Loved this. It reminded me of all the black women in my youth that shared their wisdom with us kids and we didn't understand until we got older... Now I share their wisdom with my own children...
This song choice is impeccable beyond everything!! When I lived in the SF Bay area, my favorite radio stations were KBLX and KKSF, both of which played Dianne Reeves fairly often. But since I moved away, and especially since there are no more jazz radio stations any more, I haven't heard Ms. Reeves in years. I remember this song and always loved it. Thanks from bringing it back to me.
Great song. It makes you think of the one older senior person growing up. You can go to for sane advice. Mine was Pa (grandpa on mom's side) he would ask about what's new in your life and had that quiet wisdom. Used to go help him clearing the wood in the bush, but even over 40 years later I still remember thos days sitting on the stump chatting. Musically this song is insanely good.
At the first concert I saw her perform. She told a story of hearing a Sarah Vaughn song at 7 or 8 years-old and decided she wanted to do that too. Good choice.
Dianne is a GODDESS. Please check out “Endangered Species” - it’s one of the best female artist empowerment songs. And it’s the song Sheryl Lee Ralph sang as she accepted her Emmy Award for Abbott Elementary. It’s an important song!
Hey girl, first you nailed the last name.......I KNEW you would appreciate everything about this.......convinced you're my sista from anotha mista....keep doing great things!
@@kurtschmidt9760 I watched Gigi's version of this. She has a beautiful voice, but there is no comparison to Dianne's original. Diane's voice has more depth, wisdom, incredible phrasing, and joy in her voice. Also GiGi is too young to create the kind of memories this song refers to. Her voice is too youthful. She's very good, don't get me wrong, but she does covers, and this particular song needs to be sung by the writer in this case to be fully believed and experienced. She is a great singer, but she's doing a carbon copy of Dianne, and she's mimicking all the improvisations that Dianne does spontaneously.
You are right on most of what you said but i wanted you to see the song with the live version. If you never heard Diane sing this song you would of thought that was great. Gigi has a wonderful voice and just does covers but i think she might have some orginal stuff also. I am glad you watched though
@kurtschmidt9760 I've seen Dianne Reeves live probably four times and she's stunning. The video I watched of Gigi was live. I watched a couple of her other live songs and she does have a wonderful voice. I think she should try doing some original material. She dies her covers almost identically to the originals, and it would be nice to see how she would do original runs and improvisations.
This song is good, but it makes me sad. A little lighter, try "Chan's song" off the same album. Or from a Stanley Turrentine album (Tender Togetherness) where she does guest vocals, try "Only you and me". Both beautiful songs.

Dianne is one of the finest singers that I’ve ever heard. Jazz, soul, r&b, she could do it all. Five Grammy Awards Britt, a deep rabbit hole here.

FINALLY one of my favorite reactors, checked Diane out !!!! I have requested this song so many times.
So glad you enjoyed!!
With all due respect to Anita Baker, Baker would probably happily reference Diane Reeves as an influence.
