Thanks Sean, really nice lesson. Very clear. After ten years of playing and listening to Earl, I'm still amazed by subtlety and importance of his backup. His backup on John Henry on Classic Bluegrass is but one example. His playing is so rich.

Scruggs's grandfather learned to play from my great grandfather. I learned this recently while learning about the banjo. Im still digging into it but I thought it was cool.

Nobody wants to hear a banjo, or any instrument for that matter, senselessly wail throughout an entire song. It's all a matter of taste. Listen to your bandmates and play for the song.

At 4:45 you play G(5th fret/4th string), B(4th fret/3rd string), D(7th fret/3rd string)/ and then "play them all at the same time, but you've changed finger positioning to a triad. I'm missing the logic on how you go from the original position into the triad to play all those notes at the same time. I am loving this breakdown on theory of which I know nothing! Thanks!
It's the same three notes in both examples. The first one shows the notes going up a typical scale pattern. The second plays the three notes at the same time which requires three different strings. Hope that makes sense.
If I'm a beginner player (started a week ago) should I be following this kind of instruction and be learning more theory or should I just stick to learning easy rolls and chords? This seems like a much more thorough way to learn and probably best if I can stick with it.
Anyone have any advice?
There’s a guy called Eli Gilbert if you haven’t heard of him he’s currently doing a 30 day starter banjo course all completely free check out his channel I would start there
