  • There are two main types, or divisions, for the subject of Manjushri:
    - Non-iconic (narrative based): a student of the Buddha from Mahayana literature
    - Iconic (meditational deity): based on the Tantra (Vajrayana) literature

Dear Jeff, could you explain in more detail how the eponymous historical pesrons (non-iconic) and meditational deities (iconic), such as Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, Tara and the like, correlate with each other. Thanks in advance.

So is Kwan yin actually Avalokiteshvara, Manhushri, or Tara? Seems like there is major confusion amongst the Chinese/ Japanese interpretations all across social media

Kwan Yin is a Chinese form of Avalokiteshvara depicted in female appearance based on such forms as the Willow Branch Lokeshvara. Kwan Yin is unrelated to Manjushri or Tara.
