I TESTED Spooning vs. Not Spooning my Onions - here are the results!

  • Does Spooning your onions help them grow bigger? It's a garden hack that I had read about online, and was curious to try out! The hypothesis is that by removing some of the soil around the bulb of the onion, it allows it to grow out even more easily. To put this to the test, I spooned one set of onions and let the other set grow without any spooning. Dive into the video to see how big of a difference it made!

That's really interesting! I planted mine way too deep this year. Heard about spooning late, and the few I tried it on were the only ones that bulbed. 🙈 The other ones became long, thin and slim like pencils. Next year I'm putting them shallow. 🙈

this is honestly the best trending thing on youtube though. please keep up the experiments, sir. people would rather see proof and scientific evidence rather than unsubstantiated opinions.

I grow potatoes in 3 plastic stackable crates. Cut the bottom outa 2 of the crates and the bottom off 2 black plastic bags, with lots of small puncture holes in the bottom of the 3rd bag.
Stack em' with the holed bag and crate with the base on top to start. As they grow I top up the soil till I need to put the top crate in the middle and line the bottomless crate now on top with a bottomless bag. Top up with soil or tape the bag in place till the potatoes grow more. Continue until all three crates are full of soil, then harvest when ready for 'balcony bounty!'
      Hope this helps...

Nice difference. Maybe with the shallow planting experiment the results will be different. Waiting eagerly!
Btw, just one quick thing that I've noticed in some of your past videos: I ussually use headphones to listen to them, and sometimes while you're in front of the camera (and, I assume, microphone) the audio comes stronger from one side than from the other. It's not a really big problem, but sometimes it does bug me a bit.

This was great! Looking back, I think I planted mine too deep this year. This is the first year I've had any kind of success
with onions (you know how everyone seems to have that plant they're cursed to not grow well? Onions were mine) but my bulbs were not as big as I'd have liked. I'll have to plant more shallow next year! The garlic did REALLY well for me this year, so at least I have that.

I really enjoy your videos. I often find that the onions in the centre of a bed get less light due to shading from their companions, but they may also benefit from more moisture in the centre of the bed. So switching around your spooning/no spooning sides would be an important variable for next time. Also, I have been multi-sowing onions -- ie. more than one onion per planting hole -- takes much less space and makes a huge difference (I think) to my overall harvest. I'd love to see an experiment on that, as well. Happy gardening!

Your soil is so light and fluffy so spooning really won’t make a significant difference in letting the onion push out to form a larger bulb. If the soil was more dense or had a heavier clay component, spooning would be beneficial in helping the layers push out through the heavy soil.

What happened to the rest of the bed? I counted 105 onion place holders in the bed of onions at the start. If there was only 18 onions per side then only 36 onions were weighed.

I can't help but think that spooning would be most beneficial if one has heavy clay soil as opposed to sandy or loamy soil. In one of my gardens I have red and pebbly soil ( I call it dirt!! ) lol. I spooned and I can honestly say I think it helped a lot.

These 'test' videos of yours often omit what could be interesting details and opinions - like in this case, how long did the spooning take? Was it like 1 hour to do the whole bed, x3 times? Or did it take longer, or less? That's important for judging whether it's worth bothering with (even if only just doing it once).

    • @abagailrhea3932
      @abagailrhea3932 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

Walla walla's are a long-day onion, which is better for Northern growers (draw a line lengthwise through the top 1/4 of VA all the way across the country to CA. Anything below that will be short-day varieties, anything above is long-day). So they may not so as well in TN.

You need to mix down your stereo audio into mono. This isn't the first video I've tried to watch where your vocal track is coming out of my right speaker. Since you're using a lavaliere mic I wouldn't even place it, or record it into a stereo track anyway.

We can't tell for sure because you didn't provide the weights of each onion, but my guess is that the difference is almost certainly not statistically significant. That is, there is no evidence that the difference here wasn't just random noise.
