At the time of comment, Ka has just passed away at the age of 52. I'm glad to have gotten to learn about his work a little bit before he left. Justin Hunte covers the topic. Rest in Peace. His obituary praises his unique perspective that he brought to religion in music, which brought me back here. ❤
AVAA prof. I agree with you about wanting to hear Ka rap happy bars, but he's said before "malaise most days, be years before I speak joy", as well as "Some equality, none in poverty, I'll be joyous then"
AVAA! Thank you for peeling back some extra layers of theology to this album for me. I was reading an older interview, and KA described his recording process like shifts at the fire station: when ready, he books something like 12-hour studio sessions and goes in with intention. A small detail I really liked: Bread, Wine, Body, Blood is the order of the four subject matters in hip hop he addresses in the song. I also wonder about interpreting the line “if that’s how we move, then I’m smooth, y’all can stay intact” as: if we can be in agreement on needing to avenge black leaders killed by the FBI and Klan, then everything is cool and I have no problems with y’all.
@@MarsNova That's the only other interpretation I can imagine as well. The only thing that throws me off with that is the very last part, "y'all can stay intact". It makes the most sense in my head to interpret it as: the previous lines were me (KA) picking you apart and criticizing your actions, but if we get on the same wavelength, the criticism isn't needed? Love the discussion!
Bread whine blood body - where money talks death walks. Thought you would've caught that one unless you forgot to mention it. Great in-depth breakdown though. i've tuned in for all your KA reviews, lotta great insight. We lost a legend. I appreciate him getting all the respect for his masterful artistry as a long time fan. Will be turning in for more reviews. Thanks
I came here looking for anything about Ka, seeing that he passed and after being a fan of him for many years. Yet, not only being a fan of Ka, but being a Christian, I am glad that you made this video, even if it challenged me. I find the stories of St. Dismas, Gestas, and Jesus to be very interesting, but I think I draw different conclusions from the story theologically, and yet I think that in the case of the common receptions of the implications of their ideas, Ka's album is incredible as an exploration of poverty, race in America, and late Capitalism. Your videos are awesome! I was an English major in college so it feels like I'm chopping it up with one of my professors when I watch your videos-- but none of my professors liked alternative/underground hip hop. Unfortunate, too, as I believe my at the end of my Sophomore year I sent one of them a few Ka songs, but I'm not sure if he ever got to listening to them. Thank you so much for all you do!
AVAA! i always love your videos that draw the depth from more pop-adjacent or "surface level" albums, but i live for these breakdowns of works by artists like Ka, Billy Woods, RAP Ferreira, etc, where your knowledge of the references helps reveal the intent and adds so much to my appreciation of the music. also here for the outdoor era, the atmosphere is extremely refreshing in a sea of videos recorded in front of a bedroom wall with posters on it lol
Prof. You'd never take it, but id fight for your n-word pass. Love your work man. Fav youtube channel. Most of us are too lazy to comment, but know we're watching & in awe. Your deep dives are super exciting. Keep the quirks too.
super excited for this one prof, album of the year contender imo AVAA also, are Phiiks & Lungs on your radar? Carrot Season released early and i’m loving it so far.
It feels so wrong!! This hurts really badly....i'm at loss for words!! 💔His work speaks to me in a way that few artist’s can! I wish his family blessings and healing! Rest easy KA 🕊✨
AAVA mr. Skye, i just really want to thank you. your videos are such immersive experiences, as a kid from Brazil, where most people’s knowledge of American hip hop starts and ends with Pac, Em and 50, your videos really help me to broaden my taste in hip-hop, discovering Aethiopes through here opened many doors for me, and i just want to say that as of now, this is my favorite review of the channel! the Aethiopes review is second
AVAA! Loved this analysis, you’ve just earned a new subscriber :). I completely agree with your physical vs digital album point. I’m lucky enough to have picked up a vinyl copy of honor killed the samurai (the album that first got me into ka) when it was first released and would happily buy the others as I do also enjoy the album art in addition to the music itself. I feel like the thief next to Jesus is his best album artwork yet. In a full circle moment it was actually @ThatDopeShtttt’s review of ka that brought me to your channel so thanks for help promoting that one too!
AVAA... thanks for this, I've always avoided religious things for all the things mentioned, so this would've flown by me. The title did screw my algorithm
AVAA. Honestly blown away by your analysis. I loved the album before but you never fail to just hit the nail on the head and the albums' theme just clicks and suddenly a great album becomes incredible
Rest well Ka! A true hero and a real man in every sense! This album was his final message to not only the Black community, but to the rest of the world pertaining to the Black community. I really do appreciate your time and service brother! I'm really at a loss for words because this was really my favorite rapper that I ever found. ✊🏿💪🏿🙏🏿🕊️👑🌹
Your deep dives into raps unsung is your greatest strength. I subscribed BECAUSE you covered RXK Neph... don't lose that. THAT SAID....(breathes) you did this one right. DON"T LOSE SIGHT. Respect. Rest in peace Kaseem KA Ryan.
AVAA! Religion and especially church as an institution is in the midst of many things also a form of oppression. Ka understands this very well. Im just halfway through the video, but Prof I gotta tell you, that youre great. Youre a professor whose lectures I would actually attend!
AVAA! The Ernest Chambers quote is one of my favorites. It’s from a documentary named A Time For Burning(it’s on youtube). It’s about a white minister who is trying to get his church to integrate its congregation. The sample is taken from the beginning when the minister walks into a local Black barbershop (where Chambers is a barber at the time) and basically asks Chambers for advice on what white Christians who “genuinely want to help” can do to right the wrongs of colonialism (paraphrasing here). Seeing different reviewers reaction to the sample in the last track is interesting for me. For me it’s a cathartic kind of scream reminiscent of shouting I’d hear in church growing up as a child(a church near the great dismal swamp area with long history)…when women would scream and cry during a sermon while recalling the pain they experienced in life and how for them their faith helped them survive. It’s a hard track for me to listen to because I’m the type to cry when others cry…and also because that shouting has always been connected to the reality of someone experiencing such a level of suffering in their life that it would elicit that intensity of expression (even before I had the knowledge of what that kind of oppression has meant in terms of dehumanization on a larger level). As in what have you had to experience…for you to shout that way as an expression of thankfulness for life and God…and its too much for me to get flashbacks to when I need to be focusing on a task😅
when he said the hood is fair he means its balanced, some on the top eventually fall, some on the bottom eventually rise. As Horace states, "many shall be restored that now are fallen, and many shall fall that are now in honor".
AVAA! Have not watched the video yet but I have confidence it's excellent as usual. If you ever feel like it, you should review Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown. It feels like you're walking on the edge of sanity. I know in your Quaranta video you said you weren't a huge fan of Danny Brown, but I would really urge you to check it out. It's not glorifying his lifestyle at all, it's a cautionary tale of where it leads you. Okay, I just finished the video, and you should check out Below The Heavens by Blu & Exile if you haven't already. Not necessarily to review, but at least to listen to. It dives into the idea that to get into heaven you have to live in hell (earth) as a test, as well as the idea of rejecting that and being happy with where you are.
AVAA - was just watching this as hearing of his passing. Thank you Skye for shining a light on the work of one of the genre’s greatest minds.
I think we are all in mourning. A truly great artist who was nowhere near leaving his prime. So sad for him and his family.
