The historical one was younger (he was 27 when he died as a result of an accident) and he was regarded as a bit of a dolt. His Italian campaign was militarily successful but he ultimately had to retreat to avoid being cut off from France when a coalition of Italian forces threatened to trap him.

In real life he wasn't a good politician or diplomat. Machiavelli's "The Prince" rips him a new one and uses this King as an example on how NOT to invade a nation.

Hes one if the more likeable characters in this show. Hes one of the only ones who doesnt use deception and subterfuge. Hes brutal but also kind of fair and God fearing.

Papal Legates were basically the emissaries of the pope, representing him in foreign nations. To assign one to accompany a conquering army basically signifies that said army marches with the blessing of the pope, and to take up arms against it to go against the Pope and God.
