How to Remove Stripped Screws from a Phone; Overcoming Frustration

  • This video tutorial will demonstrate how to remove stripped screws from a cell phone or tablet using several different tools and techniques. This can be difficult in some cases and while there is no guarantee that all of them will work hopefully following the advice given here will help you to accomplish your goal.
    Thanks for the great comments! We have more than one person who pointed out that lifting up on the screen lightly while turning the screws can help them to grip better when the threads or worn so feel free to give that method a shot if your screws are just spinning around. A company sent me thread lock to try but unfortunately the texture was far too coarse as it was designed for much larger screws. However there is a comment below stating that sand might work and I guess that if it were fine enough that would make sense when used with a stripped out screw head. Just try not to get sand inside of your phone if you decide to give it a try.

    Gotta say, when all other methods failed and was just stripping away more of the screw (size #00) the one method that worked was soldering the screwdriver to the screw. Had to repeat a few times, but it's out! Amazing, thanks!

    Great ideas and video! Using your suggestion about using sticky packaging tape wrapped around the tip, I was able to loosen the stripped screws in my wife's iPhone 6s Plus. What also helped was using a second phone with a magnifier app which also turns on the flashlight while magnifying. That enabled me to see in great detail the stripped screws, as well as the initial slight movements that were occurring as I attempted to loosen it. Appreciate all the TH-camrs comments as well!

    This was really thorough and helpful, thank you. I don't know what this Amazon vendor sent me, but 3 tools and only one is labeled with the Y 0.6 30mm and now I have two screws rounded on the inside of the phone on the motherboard. I am going to try electrical tape with sticky side down and a blunt tool like you said, just to get it going. It can't be THAT tight. Well, hopefully...

    Thanks to @PreppyKiddo77 and @Alex Xomon for adding this tip: Try lifting the screen a bit so that there is tension on the screw. That may be enough to engage the threads so that you can unscrew it.

    Thanks for the great video! I don't know what kind of screws my Huawei Mate 9 had, but nothing easy worked. I went down the drilling path which was nerve-wracking but worked well. Frankly, I don't even know why they have screws; there is so much tension just prying the case open, that even if there were no screws it wouldn't open by itself in a million years. I changed out my battery which wouldn't fully charge and I was getting constant overheating warnings. Got everything back together and it is now working perfectly. Thanks again for making this video!!!

    thanks for the vid it was extremely helpful, my problem was the bottom screws were filled with crud and when i was trying to unscrew it lose touch and strip the head and the tool, i used the rubber band and it defenitly helped get the crud out and saved the tool a bit from stripping more but what got it turning was a good ol 1.0 flat head with some pressure.

    I was looking for some tips on how to remove a stripped screw inside a phone. There are a couple options here that might consider. But I just wanted to add that if you’re just simply trying to remove a broken screen, you can use and I said some mowers badger and just ripped the screen off and break the screw tabs completely off of the old broken screen. I’ve done that a couple of times. I do in-Home/in-office repairs and sometimes that’s all I can do.
    Another thing is he mentioned the screws not wanting to come out. Sometimes on aftermarket screens, the screw tabs are bent inwards a bit and if you don’t bend them towards the frame of the phone before installation, the screws won’t come out. So one option is to screw the pentalobe screws back in with a bit of force so that you make those tabs bend outwards and then when you unscrew it it will push out of the phone.

    If your pentalobe screw isn't coming out (as in it makes a slight click noise as you rotate it), try and unscrew it to just before it clicks. Get a magnet and place it on the screw and pull out. This worked for me.

    You can make a tool for stripped screws by taking a skinny poking rod tipped screwdriver and dipping into liquid cement, let it dry and repeat until it is thick enough. I recommend making different sizes to comply with different screws and keep it as a set of additional tools that you know you can depend on. Something along the lines of a .060 inch steel tip hobby punch tool and liquid Flex Seal. Curing is key!

      Couldn't you just heat the tip of the screwdrivers, and try it. It could be a possibility of working, since heat expands.

    What’s you solution for stripped iPhone 7 tri point screws on the home button?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've only dealt with one iPhone 7 Y000 that was stripped but it was on the battery terminal cover not the home button. In your case I think it would depend on which screw. The one directly behind the button could be a problem if you applied pressure which is what I did in addition to using a similar sized Torx bit that was able to grip enough for removal. You might be able to carefully use a blade and cut a straight slot into it then use the smallest Phillips you can find. Jewelers use a ridiculously small one that supposedly can fit into a stripped Pentalobe screw from what I'm told but I don't have first hand experience on that. If I think of anything else I'll add it here later.

    Another way (I just found out) is great for internal screws. As the Y-screws wear out pretty fast, that indicates that the metal is quite soft. So I took a scalpel and forced it in the screws head so it bites. After a few turns, the screw was finally out. Screw was f***ed, but I had a replacement.
