Great work, it is Absolutely an arc that leaves a bad taste the first time through because Sogo's bit at the end is so damn Shocking. But once you step back and think about it it's actually pretty fucking brilliant. Like, yeah Sogo used this as an opportunity to torture the shit out of Hijikata, but that was clearly gravy. His goal was to test their bond and then say the things he just can't normally say due to who he is. And dropping Hijikata in a hole at the end... well yeah, that is Sogo and gives the chance to reset. Again I do want to point out that one of the last lines in the arc is Sogo saying he wants to set something similar up with Gin. I know we never see that happen, but it does indicate that he has found a way to talk about his feelings that is comfortable for him, if horribly uncomfortable for the other person. (Granted why we never see that second beat is an easy combination of not repeating the same thing, because Gin and Toshi are very similar and would play this out in a similar fashion. In fact there might have even been a debate for Sorachi as to which one to use, settling on Toshi because that relationship is the more visible one. Just a random thought there)
Thanks!! You helped me do a 180 on this arc, and I appreciate that haha; it is a shame we never do see Gin’s version, but like u said it would probably be quite similar haha
