  • i've been thinking about Angela Carter, the wonderful magical realist, and how i read everything by her in the early 1990s. I just got a new edition of her fairy tales and i've been dipping into them this week

Lovely as always Paul to hear you talk about your passion for Angela Carter. I was born in 1979 and came to her work in my early twenties. It's true what you say about people honing in on "will they be a better character by the end?" I think 'character arcs' are more like 'character webs'. The experiences we have, the things we learn, how we apply them, the myriad of circumstances that influence them, are not so linear as one fluid arc or a spectrum with 'best' at the end point.
That's a gorgeous front cover of the fairytales book. Mine is an old beaten up well thumbed virago paperback from 1993. I would notice the quite small print too. Yes it's true how strange it is that artists become 'vogue' after they've died. The same thing happened with Sinead O'Connor last year. I had loved her work and everything she stood for since the 80's.
Thank you Socks for your musical accompaniment.

I've only ever read The Magic Toyshop. I read it when I was sixteen in preparation to move on to English A level and then failed my English G.C.S.E. So I couldn't study The Magic Toy shop and had to go back to Romeo And Julliet. However I've 're read The Magic Toy shop three or four times I think. I'm always blown away by it. The Bloody Chamber has always intrigued me because I enjoy fairy tale retellings, I should really get to it! Hope you are having a good weekend!

I was introduced to Angela Carter and The Bloody Chamber by my friend Claire while at Uni in my first year at Aberystwyth in 1990. I read it in my lunch breaks during my work experience at the library at University of Exeter. I adore the film Company of Wolves and was amazed when I read Magic Toyshop.

I was reading this book last week it's a permanent fixture on my book shelf I bought it over a decade ago in Newcastle with a book voucher a present from a redundancy. I loved Storyteller and now in the early hours of the morning have the theme song in my head.

Thank you for this video. I'm reading The Darker side of Faery by John Kruse. It's an interesting collection of folklore stories from Ireland and Scotland about the dark side of ethereal story telling.

I’ve been meaning to try Angela Carter for a while. Spend several lazy hours on The Bloody Chamber yesterday (I don’t do that enough), couldn’t put it down. It put me in mind of Women Who Run With The Wolves, but with a more accessible style - I never did quite finish WWRWTW!

'I love my cat with a J K L' - my immediate response was 'Jekyll'! Because they are lovely but can turn nasty suddenly - and turn back again just as quick

I had reason to look up Virginia Woolf's London address last night and also the dates 1878 - 1969 . I wonder why . ? Moths are strange and cats, having cat sat all week and being brought up surrounded by cats , yes my mother was the cat woman of the street well they are purrsnickety and dribbly; apprentice hypnotists and yoga experts. They are as close to Buddhists as I can get apart from the sloth . Will order Find Me at the library and I have a Tsking library assistant there . I am having to bite my tongue very hard . No doubt somebody will say shhhhhh very soon .
