For reference modern gen 5 drive can go from 11,000-14 maybe 15,000 Mbp/s in benchmarks like crystal disk mark. The only part that has to double is the dram cache (which I’m not sure if Apple is even doing given its unified nature or if it’s off chip). This is why a 256gb gen 4 drive will be like $20 while a 2tb can be had for $80-100. 8 times the storage at 4ish maybe 5 times the price. I agree with you on two fronts. First, I don’t think the power button on the bottom is that big of a deal. I can’t even remember the last time I used the power button on my Mac mini. Honestly, I don’t think having it on the Bottom is that much less convenient than having it on the back. Second, it would’ve been nice if they would’ve put an SD card slot on the front. I too would be OK with sacrificing one of those USB thunderbolt ports.
Only looking for a comparasio between the base model and the pro model. As you neglected to mention, you got the 14core model with 48gb RAM which is the Apple sample, does not reflect normal model. So all benchmarks kind of fine, but no reference in purchasing discussion can be gathered, unless you start with two Apples from the same tree we can't tell if the Pro is worth it. For now.
I hate the power button being on the bottom. I have a monitor that auto-switches inputs when it detects a signal, which also triggers the built-in KVM. Using my MBP, I open the lid to wake it and the monitor switches. For my desktops, I have to hit the power button to wake. Not a big deal with tower and a sensible power button location, but for god's sake, having to flip the Mac Mini over to get the correct monitor input and KVM settings every time it goes to sleep would drive me crazy. It also completely prevents (or at the very least, makes very difficult) VESA mounting the Mac Mini behind a monitor, unless you want to unscrew the thing every time you access the button
I'd like you to compare render times, CPU and memory usages as well as the overall interface snappiness in Blender 4.2 while rendering a standard 3D object with a quite dense mesh subdivided to say, 0.1mm side length, with a few nodes. First in CPU then in GPU mode. Nobody does this! Alas, I guess you've already returned the beast to Apple now that the video has been uploaded.
Why are there almost no reviews specifically centring about the applications in which a compact computer like this really shines. Like a standalone installation or other contraption that is standalone on location, or as a replacement for a macbook pro in location based applications for live music and such?
I have seen many size comparisons of the new Mac mini to the Studio, previous minis and even the Mac Pro. Sadly no one has compared it to the G4 Cube-which seems to be the latest mini's earliest ancestor. I've seen a Cube in the background of some of your videos and would love to see them together. Please?
Looks amazing but I have a suggestion. There's talk about the power button, why couldn't Apple hide it in the Apple logo with a black button on the middle of the mini? That would still keep the look and solve the problem.
That's good to know, but export times are not that important. I use Final Cut with an M1 base model and I get the spinning beach ball quite often, would the M4 or M4 Pro be good for everyday video editing work?
My base M1 Macbook Pro has zero issues or spinning wheel problems even still when exporting massive 10-15 minute 4k weddings in Davinci Resolve. Super good
Nice little machine. I ordered one myself, but the power button on the bottom is a poor design choice. Minor complaint in the grand scheme, probably. That doesn't mean people can't point it out, and ask for better. Lets be honest, Apple likely put it there to save on cost, not because it was the most functional place for it.
For people that shut off/on there computers just put some rubber stick on feet to the top and flip the computer over so the bottom is facing up and the power button will be easier to use. Also you can stand it on it's side and have easy access to the power button.
Was hoping to understand how models compare when handling Adobe Lightroom Denoise, then making a decision which to buy. I'll continue my research. That power button on the bottom though, major turn off.
If you give it a little time I'm guessing there will be ext storage based off the measurements of the Mac mini that you can stack it on. But it might take a while for that to come.
Hey Brian, the Adorama link you furnished is NOT the same model and price as the one which Apple sent you. I just checked the data on Apple's site, the one which they sent you actually costs: $2,199.00 NOT $1,399.00!!!! 😎😎
I occasionally do video editing in 4k (usually at 1080p) and tend to open more apps and tabs on Google Chrome in daily use. I am considering to get a Mac Mini but not sure which is a better option for my use case. Would you recommend 1) Apple M4 Pro chip with 12‑core CPU, 16‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine 24GB unified memory 512GB SSD storage - (SGD1849 educational price) 2) Apple M4 chip with 10‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine 32GB unified memory 512GB SSD storage (I upgrade from 24GB to 32GB) - (SGD1569 educational price) Option 2 cost less even thought have more RAM. Wonder if you can share your thought on which option is more suitable for my needs. Is Option 2 (10-core GPU able to handle 4k, 32 GB RAM) able to handle 4k video editing?
@ Thanks. May I know huge difference in which area of work? (Video editing?) My thought is becos we editing 4K only occasionally and we tend to use the Mac more for daily office task and sometime audio editing, plus my daughter tend to open many tabs on chrome, option 2 may be a better deal becos is cost less with 32GB RAM. Later if we really need a Pro machine, we can sell off the one we buy now. And I think a machine with slightly more RAM tend to be easier to sell off later. And becos we buy at education price, we may not have to ‘lose’ too much during the resell. What do you think?
bro said the base model has an 8 core cpu and 8 core gpu, how’d that make it past edits. Also worth mentioning, it has 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores. Base m4 pro has 8p/4e and full spec has 10p/4e
Yes, the base 599 dollar model has a 10-Core CPU & 10-Core GPU, not 8-Core CPU & 8-Core GPU as in the video. With its 16GB of RAM, it is an amateur video editing machine in its own right, when compared with an external SSD. It can also do modelling and texturing of 3D work like on Blender and even rendering of basic projects as it has a powerful integrated GPU.
Hey Brian, Have you tried it on a QD-Oled ultra wide monitor at all? Aspect ratio and pixel layout are my main concerns. I don’t want a blurry distorted picture.
If you buy it educational or military program on Apple site. Its $100 off..I bought mine to replace my M1 mini for $499..I also did a trade in...$270 off..$229 total plus tax for an Apple M4 is crazy
Brian, Thanks! This is the best M4 Pro Mac Mini review I’ve seen. 👏 And it also helps me that the Mini you had is spec’d to what I’m looking at. 😀 And you read my mind about the lack of an SD slot. I think there’s enough room for one on the front but my guess is the Marketing team nixed an SD slot. Finally, I like how you run _multiple_ tests and then calculate the average. That’s the correct way to do tests. 👍
Great Review! Seems to me that m4pro cpu power is less relevant in real life. Video editing scales linear over the amount of media engines and GPUs. An old M1 Max keeps up very well. Also the old M2 Ultra is ways better. So let’s wait for the next studio
I entered this review to see the real performance of the new processor, and I was expecting at least a comparison with the previous generation in the Mac Mini, which is the M2 Pro processor. However, the review, strangely, went on to compare the M4 Pro processor with weaker processors from previous generations, which resulted in unrealistic and completely unhelpful outcomes. In my opinion, anyone considering purchasing the Mac Mini M4 Pro is primarily interested in comparing it with the previous Mac Mini M2 Pro, which was completely ignored in this video
@@abobadrm haha...no worries. Everyone has their ideas and expectations of what they are looking for. I'm just glad people do these tests for comparisons
I’m looking for a really good monitor in hopes of a price range from $350-$500. I don’t know if you can recommend something or have a video about this but just thought I’d ask.
Oh snap the TONG TATONG TATONG TATONG! Thanks for the reply. Glad you blown up since 2006 CES lol. But going by your review if you got a M2 pro studio you still got more potent machine than a new M4. But you’re saying unless I’m making a full blown sci fi movie I should be good for a decade with the M4.
Good video Brian as always mate, but as a harry suburban non creator , id love to see what the very base model is actually capable of , general daily use , and how far up the game ladder could we could go . Yes i know the base is not a gaming machine , but many people on a budget will push it to the limits. For example my old pc mini I7 could play multiplayer battle field some years ago , that was a first person shooter with very modest graphics.
if you look up Andrew Tsai's TH-cam channel he shows multiple games like Cyberpunk 2077 (40fps), Death Stranding (90fps) and others running on the M4 base Mac mini
I don’t get why so many reviewers have chosen to review the Pro version when the base version is what the vast vast majority will be buying, at least MKBHD kept it real.
Plug a cheaper and fast USB-C (or better, TB5) SSD with large storage capacity, and off you go. Just remember to put the FCP Library on this external storage and set Storage Locations there also (in Files → Library Properties)
I'm more than happy to run Blender tests in the future but I don't use the App at all, so I'd need someone to build a project and show me how to export it properly so I can start using it as a real-world benchmark.
I always turn my computers off when not using them, but even more disturbing is is that lack of full sized usb ports to hook up your audio interface or keyboard and mouse
I want this because I epically love and adore the *'Mac Mini'* (it's been years of blood and passion lol) but the MacBook is *"Life"* for me smhlmao so which is the best purchase (not investment I said purchase)?
Slow usb - c on forward side and fast on back side ??? Which ..... made this. If i want transfer data fast from flesh then each time i have to take mac mini in hand and turn it to plug in flash ?
This is true for the M2 Max Studio too, which has Thunderbolt 4 ports on the back and USB-C ports on the front. (The M2 Ultra Studio has Thunderbolt 4 ports on the back and front.) The new Mac Mini clearly shows the influence of the Mac Studio. So, whatever the thinking on the Studio was on port layout it clearly influenced the thinking on the new Mini. If I had to guess I would say they think the front ports will be used for USB thumb drives that don’t need the higher speeds while the back Thunderbolt ports will be used by devices that need higher speeds and are normally attached all the time. However, that’s just a guess based on how I would use them. I’m sure someone has the info on the actual thinking behind it.
For the love of God, why everyone measures performance saying “i do lot of video editing” just pop up a game or a virtual machine. You don’t pay 1600$ to edit videos that’s for children only
Please I need advice, should I go with the M4/32GB/512GB or M4 PRO/24GB/512GB for Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, FCPX... Is it better to go with PRO chip or more RAM. Thank you.
Why do you make excuses for Apple for the bad location of the power button on the new Mac Mini? A bad design is a bad design no matter how little you use the power button, and for you to pretend that it is not a big deal or not a bad design makes you look as biased. Just call it what it is, a bad design, a bad location to put the power button, and then talk about the other virtues and faults that the product actually deserves. Trying to minimize or gaslight the reader just sucks. Very disappointing that such a huge and iconic TH-camr is trying to convince us that the bad design we clearly see is not so bad. Please call it as it is, if you diminish the truth in such obvious situations, what other less obvious bad designs or inconveniences are you giving Apple a pass on? What else are you making light for Apple so you can keep priority access to Apple's top leadership? If you honestly don't see the point of this criticism, then maybe you have been too comfortable for too long with the industry you are supposed to be critically and honestly evaluating, criticizing and/or applauding as it honestly merits it. Have you been too cozy with Apple that you have lost your objectivity?
@@briantong Sorry, you did not apologize, but minimized the patently bad design, making it sound like it is not a big deal because it is not that bad of a design. You never call it a bad design, you omitted that. It would be different if you called it as it is and called it a bad design, but that it is not a big negative. It would have been just a minor criticism acknowledging a plain fact, but you did not do that. Plenty of other reviewers call it out, how it was as bad as the bottom charging mouse design, but this is Apple so what can you do. They said the same thing as you, that it is not a big deal, but they recognized that Apple messed up and moved on. You (and also iJustine) consistently avoid making any criticism of Apple, not even minor criticisms that everybody can clearly see. Then I see you and iJustine consistently getting access to top Apple leadership like Tim Cook, Craig Federighi, and John Ternus and it makes you wonder how cozy you both have become with Apple. I might be wrong, after all both of you have been covering Apple for almost 2 decades and are so good at what you do, but I was unexpectedly shocked when it is inexplicable that such trusted TH-cam veterans did not call out such minor but clear design criticism. I don't enjoy bringing this criticism because I have enjoyed watching you and trusted your videos for almost 2 decades, since CNET times. Could you be too cozy with Apple that you don't see what I criticized?
Yes the power button is stupid. I would prefer to mount it as a secondary computer to my PC which makes reaching the power button a pain. I wouldn’t need it running in standby all the time.
It’s a good spot for the power button. This Mac mini. Is designed to be moved around. And fit in tight spaces. They designed in the perfect spot that it won’t get bumped easily. Great design apple.
The power button thing has to come from people that don't use Macs or people that just need something to whine about. I've had my Mini M2 Pro 32g, 1t since it came out. I'v never turned it off once. Never, Ever had a need to do so.
PC people turn their machine on all the time, you know they shutdown and update and shutdown randomly ALLL THE FREAKING TIME, also they have no actual working sleep mode, they have to turn it off, so they need to turn it on again. mac users have a fucntioning sleep mode since, well in the last millenia
@@joseherrera8489 Well, if you use a PC you have to shut it off so it doesn't overheat and burn your house down. If you're using Apple Silicon you just leave it running as the OS is made to let it go to sleep and use very little electricity, automatically do updates, etc. If you can't afford the electricity it costs to let your computer run then go back to stealing it from the trailer next door.
@@briantongliving in 2004 is the best life indeed lol. In all seriousness, it's just an observation, and in case nobody told you that before. if it's by choice, then good for you, but i suggest some looksmaxxing, or at least presentmaxxing lol.
I'm sick and tired of people telling me you don't hit the power button that much to justify a flawed design. when you go out the bath room do you keep the lights on? give me a break.
you have no clue, about apple, design or anything at all really. NOBODY ever turns off their mac. this button is used approx once per lifetime. it is genius design and not flawed
There are many people who do turn their computers off. I do and so do many other people. Just because you leave yours on doesn't mean that everyone leaves theirs on.

You can sacrifice a USB port for a SD card reader. Just plug one in 👌🏾
Why are there almost no reviews specifically centring about the applications in which a compact computer like this really shines. Like a standalone installation or other contraption that is standalone on location, or as a replacement for a macbook pro in location based applications for live music and such?
Other YT channel mention that the mini runs cooler (hence faster) when place upside down. Can you please verify ….
Very good review! I would like to know more about the base model
Please?
No one has storage speed benchmarks? is the internal SSD faster than the one in the M2 Mini?
Ty BT, this was the review I needed 💯
Looks amazing but I have a suggestion. There's talk about the power button, why couldn't
Apple hide it in the Apple logo with a black button on the middle of the mini? That would still keep the look and solve the problem.
That's good to know, but export times are not that important. I use Final Cut with an M1 base model and I get the spinning beach ball quite often, would the M4 or M4 Pro be good for everyday video editing work?
My base M1 Macbook Pro has zero issues or spinning wheel problems even still when exporting massive 10-15 minute 4k weddings in Davinci Resolve. Super good
And recommendations for best monitor to run with this bad boy.
I know it's out of most peoples budget but I love my studio display.-d-
I have this same question too.
I’d love to know this as well.
Also you can stand it on it's side and have easy access to the power button.
yeah was thinking same thing as I only use my Mac every so often (might be off for weeks don't see point of sleep mode for that long).
Was hoping to understand how models compare when handling Adobe Lightroom Denoise, then making a decision which to buy. I'll continue my research. That power button on the bottom though, major turn off.
Totally portable, you could use an iPod for a screen or even your phone!
Could you power it from a powerbank???
Can I use my regular 4k tv with hdmi 2.1 with the Mac mini? And can you tell me why I shouldn’t?
What is the best way to expand external storage?
If you give it a little time I'm guessing there will be ext storage based off the measurements of the Mac mini that you can stack it on. But it might take a while for that to come.
good.. please add M4 mini, which is the actual headturner right now...
I wonder how my soon-to-be-replaced tricked-out 2017 27" iMac would fare on those Geekbench scores...
Can you please test the thunderbolt external drive speed? Especially compared the same enclosure and drive to M1, Thnaks.
Would you recommend
1) Apple M4 Pro chip with 12‑core CPU, 16‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine 24GB unified memory 512GB SSD storage - (SGD1849 educational price)
2) Apple M4 chip with 10‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine 32GB unified memory 512GB SSD storage (I upgrade from 24GB to 32GB) - (SGD1569 educational price)
Option 2 cost less even thought have more RAM.
Wonder if you can share your thought on which option is more suitable for my needs. Is Option 2 (10-core GPU able to handle 4k, 32 GB RAM) able to handle 4k video editing?
option 1 the cpu cores make a huge difference, search about it! and the ram is not a must, it should run real smooth with 24gb
@ Thanks.
May I know huge difference in which area of work? (Video editing?)
My thought is becos we editing 4K only occasionally and we tend to use the Mac more for daily office task and sometime audio editing, plus my daughter tend to open many tabs on chrome, option 2 may be a better deal becos is cost less with 32GB RAM.
M4 vs M4 Pro Benchmark comparison would be interesting, but I understand why the M4 wasn’t included.
The single score for the M1 on the chart at 3:30 must be wrong. It should be about the same as the M1 Max.
Gaming is pretty easy with crossover
When r u going to do MS office benchmarks on these machines? ;)
I Really really need to know blender render times.
who buys the Pro? Let me know how the basemodel is.
Look for the iMac reviews. It has the base chip.
@@jayehm9446 not the full chip in the iMac tho...
I have computer that was made in 1998 and is running windows 10 (very slowly).
I would like to know if this will be faster than that??
Noooooooo...
Would also love to see a bench for after effects. Thinking of getting this new mac mini for a more mobile machine since i cant drag around my pc lol
Does a magic mouse key keyboard with lightning, charger work with the new Mac mini M4?
Yes
Brian,
Thanks!
Awesome & Thanks :)
Can it do two monitors at 4k 144hz?
The only downside is for the cost of a monitor you need you should likely just get an air
If he doesnt have that computer, it’s hard for him to run the tests. He did what he could and what he had.
@@redesignedlife777 You’re right, and I apologize to the channel owner and to you if my comment was inappropriate.
@@abobadrm haha...no worries. Everyone has their ideas and expectations of what they are looking for. I'm just glad people do these tests for comparisons
I’m looking for a really good monitor in hopes of a price range from $350-$500. I don’t know if you can recommend something or have a video about this but just thought I’d ask.
good monitors start above 1000, it is simply not possible for this money.
2:04 I totally agree with that! I think people yelling have never used Macs actually. They don’t know how Macs work 🙄🙄
So, my man Brian, the question for the people like me who “like to spend money,” should I sell my M1 Ultra Mac Studio and get a MAXED OUT M4 Pro?
I wouldn't trade it out if I were you, M1 Ultra is still a BEAST, and the SD Card slot is important for me, but might to be as big of a deal for you?
@ thx brother! I’ll keep my current machine.
Brian!!! Good to meet you yesterday at Intuit Dome. Can’t wait to get my M4 Mac Mini.
Grant! Awesome to meet you too! Hope to see you at another game and KEEP CRUSHING IT!
@ appreciate it! See you soon!
Always with the good ass videos! So why should I wait for an M4 Mac Studio? Lol
I think where the overhead and extra power is going to be useful is for the small sliver of users who want to do immersive video edits.
Most amazing .... pro.. amazinig I enjoy the complete package... this is amazing!
They can only review what units they get….if they don’t get base models then they can’t review them…can they?
@ It’s my understanding that Apple offers them the choice, I may be wrong.
@@InimitaPaul as he said in the video thats what he got
great review man, but BG render in FCP will eat up all the storage, worth mentioning
Plug a cheaper and fast USB-C (or better, TB5) SSD with large storage capacity, and off you go. Just remember to put the FCP Library on this external storage and set Storage Locations there also (in Files → Library Properties)
Oh, and we need Blender test because it can take advantage of the hardware raytracing which many of us who do 3D can benefit from.
I'm more than happy to run Blender tests in the future but I don't use the App at all, so I'd need someone to build a project and show me how to export it properly so I can start using it as a real-world benchmark.
@@briantong I could totally set up an easy to run scene in Blender to test both CPU and GPU performance.
Worst button ever. It it even worst that it is likely part of a marketing strategy.
I turn off my mac every day here in Europe Power is very expensive
I always turn my computers off when not using them, but even more disturbing is is that lack of full sized usb ports to hook up your audio interface or keyboard and mouse
I want this because I epically love and adore the *'Mac Mini'* (it's been years of blood and passion lol) but the MacBook is *"Life"* for me smhlmao so which is the best purchase (not investment I said purchase)?
2300 Mac mini at that price I would take a 2000 Mac Studio.
Apple didn't send you the M4 US$ 599 base model, but the US$ 2.199 M4 Pro configuration. Not the best of the references for the video.
are u sure?
@@koto9x Quite sure, unless 95% of the people that buy Macs Mini are "content creators", rather than normal users.
Apples Gaming Console?
Brian the GOAT
I turn my computer off every single day. Why is that so odd??
I'm not the norm because I turn my computer off every time I use it.
The review unit Apple sends out is the configuration most people don’t care about yay
the apple logo should have been the power button
It’s a shame world wide shipping is a concept that is far from being developed in Apple board rooms.
That M4 Studio is going to be disgusting when it drops
For the love of God, why everyone measures performance saying “i do lot of video editing” just pop up a game or a virtual machine. You don’t pay 1600$ to edit videos that’s for children only
hi sir ssd speed test please
Just needs games and it's perfect
The fact that it isn’t better than the M1 Max is weird
The power button on the bottom is the very best. They know you’re not gonna use it very much. 😂
You shouldn’t be turning off Macs with the power button anyway, they hate it.
Please I need advice, should I go with the M4/32GB/512GB or M4 PRO/24GB/512GB for Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, FCPX... Is it better to go with PRO chip or more RAM. Thank you.
I also want to know
you should go with M4 Pro with more GPU for video editing performance.
TH-camr bias of “pro” users shining through with the sd slot over usb port recommendation 😂
When did I ever apologize? It's just not as big of a deal as some people are making it out to be. That's all I said,.
Turn it on its side or upside down….🙃
Are these mac's a gift from Apple? Can you keep them?
I mentioned in most of videos they are early access for review and they go right back to them.
@ great, keep the Journalism aspect of independence alive 💪
It’s a good spot for the power button. This Mac mini. Is designed to be moved around. And fit in tight spaces. They designed in the perfect spot that it won’t get bumped easily. Great design apple.
im with you on the PC vs Mac situation. To me the PC is a toy, and the Mac is for work.
I dont like the colour of the power button😜
Wow, that power under the Mini is a first world problem.
I'm out of the house for 14 hours a day. Why MUST I keep my computer running all that time?
@@joseherrera8489
Well, if you use a PC you have to shut it off so it doesn't overheat and burn your house down. If you're using Apple Silicon you just leave it running as the OS is made to let it go to sleep and use very little electricity, automatically do updates, etc. If you can't afford the electricity it costs to let your computer run then go back to stealing it from the trailer next door.
NO! No I do not like the redesign. It was unnecessary and a waste.
