  • On Saturday, May 18th, 2024, the very first Minersville Community Day celebration took place in Minersville, PA. Many different activities, crafts, and food vendors were present, however, the highlight of the event was the steam-powered train rides departing north from Minersville Station to the New St. Nicholas Coal Breaker owned by Reading Anthracite.
These trips took place every hour, on the hour, from 10am to 3pm, leading to a total of six shuttle trips pulled by Railway Restoration Project's CNJ 0-6-0 steam locomotive #113. The locomotive also completed a morning test run to the breaker, and an evening run to the breaker to reline switches, resulting in the locomotive making 8 total trips to the breaker. This video covers the 12pm trip.
This event proved to be historical as well, as it was the first time in 64 years that 113 visited the property of Reading Anthracite, formerly Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, who once owned the 113 and used it in the 1950s for service at a colliery in Locust Summit. Additionally, it was the first time passenger trains departed north from the Minersville station in 90 years!
NOTE: This footage was obtained through permission granted by Railway Restoration Project 113. Please do not attach cameras to the 113, or any locomotive, without receiving prior permission to do so!
Railway Restoration Project 113 is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to the history of railroading in Schuylkill County! If you are interested, please consider making a donation to the organization to keep 113 operational and hauling passenger trains. You can do so through the following link: www.paypal.com...
With that being said, please enjoy this uncut footage of these historic trips from earlier this year!

This came out great! Gives a really unique perspective on the breaker runs that day. I was surprised to see how 113 has a regular "wobble" as she does down the tracks.

Thanks Jamie! It sure did turn out pretty cool, just gotta figure out something to keep the whistle from maxing out the audio. And yeah, it definitely has a bit of a wobble as it goes

Really loved this video. Would have liked to see more. Did 113 run around the train at Nicholas Coal Breaker for the return trip? How many coaches was it pulling? He had some traction problems towards the end of the video. Very interesting. Probably the best cab ride you could ask for.

Thanks! If you wanna see some angles from the ground and in the cab during these excursions there is another video from about a month ago on my channel. It was only pulling two cars and a diesel on these trips, and no it did not run around the train which is why I cut this video off there. It was definitely exciting!
