@@VanessaJoy I'm so happy I came across your channel. I recently got the Nikon mirrorless and I shoot a lot of newborns in studio and I hate it. I so prefer my D3s DSLR inside with my strobe and just overall color in studio. I'm happy to see that you are still shooting with both, as I thought I was the only one who hated the EVF and was struggling to like this mirrorless and ready to return it. Perhaps I can shoot with both of mine still.
I love watching gear in my bag videos as it is either minimalist or lots of small accessories for one particular function. For shoots I do only pack gear for that particular day as I like to travel light. In the past I have taken everything, lenses, batteries, speedlites, momopod, filters and spares !

It's a conversation between the couple and I. I have suggestions, but I usually base it on what they want and what their lives are like. I'm always on the lookout for new spots :-)

Maybe talk to Peter McKinnon about that camera strap. He's got that leather making friend that would easily understand what a photographer needs. That's a pretty slick setup. I use 2 bags depending what I'm shooting. Nice to see Seth can shoot normal portraits too. They look great!!

So I’m traveling to Florida for a short trip. I have a tendency to take way more than I need. I plan to do some afternoon beach shoots. Along with my R, I was planning on bringing the RF50 1.2 and the 70-200 2.8. Is this a good kit along with an A1 or two?
Very helpful and concise, as I've recently been thinking about my roadmap for gear expansion! I'm looking forward to Canon's RF 135mm or whatever they come up with that's similar. And agreed, when I "started" I loved the 70-200 2.8 IS, but it's super heavy. Hi Vanesa, thanks for sharing what's in your bag. Just wondered, if you don't have an assistant and you're shooting outdoors, how do you choose between using the B1 or the tri-grip? I am assuming it is impossible to hold both the camera, tri-grip and B1 simultaneously. I'm already super impressed that you are able to shoot a gripped R5 with the massive 28-70 f/2 with one hand, while also hold a B1 or trip-grip with the other. That must take some practice?!

I'm assuming you have an assistant go with you to handle that B10 since you are not using a stand :) I opted to get a foldable wagon so I can take a small stand for off camera flash. I'm hoping it works out. Apparently it does for others who do the same genre photography I do. For action shots a 70-200mm is essential.
OK..so let's take a brief minute to address the elephant in the room. That was over 8K in equipment. So just a reminder: VJ is an accomplished pro with a thriving business. When you get to her level of the craft, it's more about the quality of equipment and features rather than the cost. So don't get discouraged. There are lower budget items that work almost as well. If you're just starting out remember this: We all start from the same place in photography...Knowing very little and having even less. I couldn't FIT 8K of gear in my bag b/c my car won't fit in it. But I have all that I need to get my work done on a semi-pro level. What I got out of the video is to take what you REALLY need on an outdoor shoot and NOT to try and carry every piece of equipment you own b/c you MIGHT need it (made me stop and think "Why do I take my extension tube set?"). It's what I enjoy about VJ's videos...it speaks to the beginner, the hobbyist, the semi-pro and the pros. Question to VJ: How have you been coping with the pandemic in terms of having a photography business?
So so true! That would be another great video, “photo shoot gear for under $1,599” or something to that effect. Lol I’m pretty sure when I started 20ish years ago my gear cost even less than that. 2020 took 90% of both my wedding photo biz and my husbands wedding video biz away. We both are managing tho with doing other types of shoots (corporate, maternity, portraits, etc) and throwing ourselves into TH-cam. The PPP from the federal government and local small business relief grants didn’t hurt either :) How about you??
@@VanessaJoy I'm one of the semi-pro guys. I have a F/T job in IT but since this crisis I've had ONE paid shoot. All the equipment in my basement studio has protective dust covers...that have a film of dust on them. So make sure you and your hubby STAY SAFE as this thing makes its second round. AND KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING! It's SO encouraging to get videos about the craft. Gives me something to look forward to when I eventually start hitting the shutter button again!
nice review. do you think 35mm creates too much distorsions with respect to 50mm ? I like to use my sigma art 35mm F/1.4 everywhere but at min 2m when i shoot portraits.
It does create more distortion but it’s not too crazy, it can be altered in post and if you keep it in mind when shooting then it likes won’t be a problem ;)
Hi. I just ordered r6 :) if you could just buy one lens at the moment will you get 50 1.2 for extra dreamy look or 28-70 for less special but more versatile??? So difficult to choose 🤷♂️

I'd like to hear your thoughts on that choice as it seems many would prefer the 45 megapixels of the R5 over the 20 megapixels of the 1Dx 3 for studio work.

@@VanessaJoy - Thanks for the input, that makes sense about the tethering, Exposure Simulation, and optical vs EVF differences. I've been switching the *Expo. simulation* (RED menu, item 7) to *Disable* when shooting with flash/strobes, and it works well, but I need to remember to put it back to *Enable* when I'm done. I might just set up one of the custom modes (like C1) for strobe/Speedlight work and then it will always be ready. Thanks again for doing these videos.
@@JaredRibic well it automatically turns of exposure simulation when the trigger is attached to the hot shoe, but that becomes annoying when it’s a dark studio and the EVF shows weird-looking slow video vs what’s right in front of your face.
So when it comes to taking shots of the rings, is that your thing ? Can the 135 do the same? I want to 28-70 and only one other lens that being 100 or 135 but a friend said the 100 can take macro shots of the ring but the 135 can’t. I’m waaays away from ever doing a wedding but would love to assist in a wedding and was just wondering. I want to specialize in outdoor portraits and eventually weddings as well
No I don’t do macro ring shots at an engagement session. I save that for the wedding. I do take ring shots, usually with the 28-70 and then I can always crop in closer with the 45mp image :)

What a great video!! The 28-70mm 2.0 is definitely going to be first RF lens for my R5. It makes perfect sense for leaving my other lenses at home. I hope that Canon makes a 135mm 2.0 , 1.8 or 1.4 RF lens. Please Canon! I hope you're reading this.

@@VanessaJoy I did learn on another site that if you shoot the R5 at 1.6 crop, you lose a little more than 1 stop in depth of field. So shooting with the 28-70mm at 1.6 will probably yield the look of shooting at f3.2 on the 28-70mm. So I guess it's best to stick with the 135mm when needed.
Hmm... have you ever run into a situation where you needed a second body as a backup? I totally get wanting to be light and nimble, but showing up on a shoot with only one body can be a little scary. I typically pack a second body and have it attached to my second most commonly used lens (when shooting on location, not something I do a lot of, but it does happen). I’ve found that when doing that, lens changes are just a simple grab the second body and shoot with it. If one body goes down (heaven forbid), I’m not totally dead in the water. I know the chances of a body going down is slim, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

IMO, the take away from this video is about using a long lens to avoid intimidation at the beginning, similar to another photographer's tip of using the back of your hand to face the subject(s) instead of the palm.

If I don’t have an assistant I usually bring my A1x and I’ll place it on the ground for backlit if I need :)

It turns off exp compensation (which you can change I believe) but other than that it works the same :)
