  • One of my favorite things to look out for, while interning, working, or being on clinicals is the way PTs communicate with patients. I think THIS is the stuff that is not taught in school. As I went along my journey as a PT student, I picked up little communication gems here and there. It may be good analogies to use. It may be the way a PT reassures and educates a patient. Every therapist communicates a little differently.
I am sure you have heard of the common advice of - "its important to get a good subjective." It is a theme that I have heard from professors, clinicians, mentors. Because it is the foundation of your treatment. It's how you understand your patient. Where they are coming from. Mechanism of injury. Ruling out red flags. What their goals are. What is important to them. It's how you start building a relationship.
Atul Gawande wrote an amazing thought provoking book called Being Mortal. It is about the current state of end-of-life care in the medical system from a surgeon's perspective. He does a pretty good of of classifying different communication styles that medical doctors have. This video summarizes some of the points that he makes in the book
