For me the most important thing is the cup size. I too have larger ears so I think the Bose is the one for me. The differences in sound quality are minimal. An uncomfortable pair of headphones is useless, even if they sound great.

As someone who has owned both 1000XM4s and 5s, I think it's important to mention some of the minor but still noticeble differences. You lose foldability with the 1000XM5s, but the 4s had a really harsh operating voice(?) and indication sound effects. As someone with sensitive ears, the gentler voice and sounds made a world of a difference for me each time I turned the headphones on. That being said, it would be nice if Bose reviews addressed how exactly the device tells you it's at low battery and if it shouts at you when you turn it on/off.
I have both silver and black NC 700. Probably my favorite headphones as far as listening to rock songs. I do have use beats solos and Sony xm3 for rap and EDM. The most comfortable to the gym out of the 3 headphones. I do have have the QC ultra earbuds and I love them. They say in my ears better than my airpods pro 2.

Yes, ANC is #1 with me. And durability is #2; I am active and I sleep while wearing headphones... Sennheiser in your other video shows not only a 60-hour battery!!! But, a 60-hour battery should give twice the lifespan over XM5's and even more than QC Ultra. ANC and durability means I bought QC Ultra$$$ Even though XM4's are -- only $228 now online. Who wouldn't pay a couple hundred more for better sleep? Thank you.

I have the XM5 and got the Bose ultra because of comfort and personally I like the anc better. Also the XM5s get super uncomfortable real fast and makes my ears hurt after about 15 minutes of use.
The song part distinctly shows xm4 is a bargain since rich sound quality and really good bass. Xm5 and Bose both has lack of bass and sounds cheaper imo. Bose was always this way thats why i went XM3 over 700 back in the days. Seems like Sony made a wrong turn with XM5 sadly 🥶 There is no reason for me to wear this type of headphones if you dont get a distinct bass and in terms of nc there is not a big difference to sacrifice the music quality.
If the Bose sounds better, the Codec support is irrelevant. How does it matter? On my Sony XM4s, I can't hear ANY difference with LDAC. Spotify caps at 320mps, anyway. On my XM4s, when I switch on the EQ with flat settings, the sound quality drops significantly, which renders the EQ redundant. I'm frustrated that not one reviewer has ever addressed it.

It's not weak,is different,very contoured but yes definetly you CAN feel low bass punch in them,the worst thing in them is fit because if you wear glasses you might have a problem with anc while you will turn your head :C

Always check the latest videos because those will have gone through several firmware updates, and each sample is recorded after the new update, with small variables in coupling and acoustics. Even with the variables, the XM5 is consistently better than the XM4 at canceling the more-audible midrange noises, and actually closer to the Bose in that area. The XM4's ANC is nowhere near the Bose.
Hi, you only use chatter noise for you ANC test. This kind of noise is focus on the mid frecuencies. On the low frecuencies the XM4 is better than the Bose Ultra. (Rtings test) Thanks

I am also deciding to buy already confused between SM4 and XM5 now this bose QC ultra? If my frn can buy from CA it will cost me same amount of sony in India. My ears are close to my head. The cushions are deeper on the Bose, but they are thicker. This causes the padding to wedge between the cartilage of the back of my ears and my skull. Effectively, they push my ears outward, and this starts to hurt within about 5 - 10 minutes. Not a problem with the XM5's; conversely, they tend to pin my ears closer to my head, which is not painful, even after hours of continuous use. The Bose immersion feature is a gimmick, and it's distracting. If you turn 90 degrees in either direction, the original front is still front. Nice trick. Turn 180 degrees to "look" behind you... when you turn back, the "stage" just moved 90 degrees. This would be very distracting while walking around. Not sure what the point is anyway. The immersive sound is interesting, but sounds weird/over-processed. XM5's clarity is way better, especially, after adjusting the EQ to your liking. Go try 'em on and listen. Compare. Everyone is different. That said, my vote goes to Sony. (I also liked the plain QC non-ultras a bit better than the Ultras, because the foam is not as thick and doesn't push my ears forward as much.) BYW, the foam openings are just about as wide and tall on all the Sony and Bose options. Only foam thickness and firmneas seems to vary. Maybe also the underhang. (I.e. there seems to be more room under the Bose cushions, which seems to allow the back of my ears to get under them more easily and wedge them outward. I like most of the Sony attributes and features better, but I will admit that the ANC on the Bose seems a bit (but not much) stronger.
XM5s have to be the most uncomfortable pair of headphones I've ever tried to wear. That's just me. The Bose QC Ultra are soooo comfy but I noticed my ears did get a touch warm after a while. I have XM4s to pick up tomorrow's to try as well. Jury still out.

I had Denon and tried Bose Ultra in a store. It seems to me that the ultras, immersion mode is a bit better than Denon's, because they have bigger drives and shape of over ear headphones, which cover your entire ears. As sound quality, I think both sound great. Maybe Denon is a bit clearer, and the sound is tuned for your individual ear, with the AAT. If the money is no object, I'd go for Bose because it has better ANC and comfort.
The bose quiet comfort (not ultra) sounds great. Even compared to the sonys at best buy. I thought the bose qc sound much better. The soundstage is great. Better instrument separation. And the bass is definitely still there, especially when turned up in eq. The bose sound fantastic, not muddied down with bass up and very clear and you get a good seal/noise canceling. And the moonstone blue color is gorgeous.
I don’t understand the point of head tracking. Why would I want to feel like I’m listening to music on speakers across the room? I want the music to follow me which is why I’m wearing headphones and not using speakers.

As he said only sony allows you to turn off anc but even then sony apply too much dsp. If you really want best sound go with wired iems(thieaudio, 7hz, etc) & then use something like fiio btr7 or ear hooks bt receivers they will blow anything wireless headphones out of water for sheer sound quality. If you want wireless headphones & great sound currently audeze maxwell are the only truly great sound in a wireless headphones. Any anc headphone won't sound good for the money.
I found the active noise cancellation test results strange. Based on the tests carried out and shown in the video, the performance of the Sony XM5 (minute 6:00 to 6:04) is worse than the Sony XM4 (minute 6:05 to 6:10). This is the first time I've seen the active noise cancellation of the XM4 be better than the XM5. This result is very strange. Always, in every analysis I've seen, the XM5 performs much better than the XM4. Please, help me to understand this result!
XM5 is better, i had a pair of Xm4s and wanted to upgrade. I got the Bose QC ultra. They were comfortable. But the bass wasn’t as punchy as the xm4 and the highs were abit shrilly. The noise cancelation, was worse than the Xm4, i walk daily. I noticed right away on the first walk i could hear the cars passing by much more i could hear people talking behind me something i never would notice with the XM4. I retuned the Bose after 3 days got the XM5 and wow way less car noise when the pass even better than the XM4. Don’t by the hype these QC ultra are. Just all marketing. Last point, the touch volume control suck massively. And double click to skip forward was more admin than needed, xm5 touch controls far easier.
Only thing I really care about is sound quality, but the trebble on all 3 are hurting my ears just through the phone. Hope that can be turned down enough

At last someone is talking about ANC on human voices. They are the triggers for sure. Well, now I know why I never got the XM5s. I did buy the Bose Ultras, but I didn't like them. Not bad, but at AUD$649, I didn't like the build quality and figured I could break them. I am going back to earbuds and now getting the Technics AZ80s. No hype, just getting the job done. I like your reviews.
So with my QC ultras I havent been able to get noise cancelling to do as well as any TH-cam video. And they are so tiny. Though they aint any AKG 712 headphone they are nice to have - wish they had water resistance though.
I’m confused by what you mean about turning off ANC? I simply press and hold a button on my QC Ultras and can go into Aware mode which is turning off ANC… also there is a transparency mode which works miles better than the XM5s I owned before 🤔
If you are in a reasonably quiet room there is no need for noise cancelling, so it would be nice to be able to turn off ANC, to get rid of the white noise sound, and to save battery, while still maintaining a little bit of passive noise cancelling.
**edit to original post** With some holiday gift money I also bought the QC Ultra today and they are WAY more comfortable than the QC45s I have and now I think they are really on par with the new Sony XM5s I just got on Christmas Eve. You just can't go wrong here, especially with both. I think I need to start selling off some of my stock. With 16 pairs, I think my collection is redundant now. 🤦🏻♂️ I had to make a decision today. I wanted to add either the XM5 or Ultra to my 14 headset arsenal. After comparing how much more I like my XM4s than my Quiet comfort 45s, I went with the XM5 and I'm not disappointed. They are amazing. This was strictly personal, because oddly enough the world thinks the Bose QC45s are the most comfortable, but I actually find the Sony fits my head better and is significantly more comfortable. From my searching, the XM4's have better base output than the XM5's, although the XM5 does have a bit cleaner sound than its predecesor. If it is base you want, probably the Ult Wear would have more base and cost less while still having respectable sound, and does have some similarities to the XM5 in terms of noise canceling. For spanish rock and hip hop I think if you're thinking budget decide between the Ult Wear and the XM4, but if you have the money and want more crisp audio go for the XM5.

There must be something wrong with your test. Only yesterday I compared XM4 with XM5 in a loud shop and the XM5 were definitely reducing all kind of noise, especially talking, much better than the XM4. In your test it seems like the XM5 are much weaker in noise reduction
ANC in the xM5s is very unreliable. It adjusts intensity automatically and there's no way to switch it off. The xm4s will have stronger and more consistent noise cancelling in more environments and it won't drop off randomly
I sold my XM5's for the Bose based on the reviews on TH-cam. The Bose sounds great but, but, but on S23 Ultra they are not as good as the XM5 with LDAC. XM5 sound is impressive expecially with the right EQ settings. I'm a Hip Hop & R&B person so that may play a factor. Samsung doesn't allow aptx so that's a bummer for me. Because of this the Sony's just sound better to me. I did sell my WFXM5 earbuds for the Bose Ultra earbuds though. The Bose buds bass just out thumps the Sony's. And the fit is so much better. With these I don't even care about the LDAC codec. It doesn't matter in this instance, the Bose are better. Also I'm using Apple Music all Loseless or Dolby audio downloaded songs on the S23 Ultra and iPhone 15 pro. Great Review.
Xm5 still overall the kings. The mic performance alone is great. But the fast charging, far better battery life, can turn off anc & still extend the use of the headphones, also no nc pressure, most importantly ldac vastly more supported by many devices especially Samsung. Also not to mention the Sony app is just insane. & eq is far better than bose.
I don't know if Bose has NC issues but the Sony does for years already. Screaming noise coming out of the speakers. This issue started with the 4th generation as fas as I know

I have worn out the XM4s and XM5s until the headphone port broke or the noise canceling function stopped working but that's extreme long term use. The XM5s don't have the same problems, they are built way tougher. No problems at all and I don't know anyone with issues. Number One noise canceling headphones in the world 4 years in a row baby.

But I just moved over to the apple ecosystem with a MacBook Pro purchase and unfortunately the XM4’s quality deteriorates big time on MacBook apparently it’s an issue with some app trying to access my mic and causing a conflict between the Mac identifying the xm4 as in headset mode va headphone mode any way wonder if the xm5 or Bose QC ultra have this issue

Looks like the Airpods Pro are still the best choice for me compared to any of these headphones. I was super tempted by the Bose but the mic sounds soooo bad. And I really dont like the audio of the XM4 / XM5, plus the fact that the box of the XM5 is super big. And let's not forget the price. For 400EUR, I want the best and nothing else. Airpods Pro for 250EUR have more to offer from my point of view (super sound quality, better transparency, very good ANC, and easy to bring anywhere with you).
I have XM5 and my brother just bough the ULTRA and they don't sound like your sound quality test at all. In fact I would say you inverted them. Your XM5 recording sounds more on the base than ULTRA but in reality ULTRA highs are horrible.

I returned the Bose QC Ultra because their sound was not impressive. I also own the Beats Studio Pro and the XM5. Sony has the best sound by far. With the XM5 you Feel the music, Bose made me feel Nothing.
And Bose qc ultras has ANC on par with AP max in terms of quantitative attenuation in every range , I guess every pair of ear works different thus people have got varying preferences

You can turn off voice commands :) They add it around 2 months ago,i sold my XM4 and buy XM5 but now i need to repair my fault
lmao the voice for the Sony XM3/XM4/XM5 is the standard voice used for bluetooth devices. My Jlab headphones have the same voice.

All around, the Xm5's is still king. Ppl make a big deal over the headphone case, it easily slips in my backpack because its slimmer.

Please add to your tests more noise profiles, e.g. airplane, commute, road, etc. Only caffe noise is not enough.

If you are looking for sound quality you should also consider the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless. They sound significantly better than the XM5
Yep the momentum 4 wireless sound much better than bose or sony to my ears however the noise cancelling is not as good.
I am also deciding to buy already confused between SM4 and XM5 now this bose QC ultra? If my frn can buy from CA it will cost me same amount of sony in India.
It lacks spatial audio and ldac, currently own macbook pro and iphone. I am already inclining towards SM4 but still confused that I should not buy something not worth the price for. I need anc but until unless doing the good work thats fine with me not like I need the industry best anc like sony but more importsnt is sound.

You should review Bowers & Wilkins PX8 and Sennheiser Momentum 4 to compare with these above-mentioned headphones
My ears are close to my head. The cushions are deeper on the Bose, but they are thicker. This causes the padding to wedge between the cartilage of the back of my ears and my skull. Effectively, they push my ears outward, and this starts to hurt within about 5 - 10 minutes. Not a problem with the XM5's; conversely, they tend to pin my ears closer to my head, which is not painful, even after hours of continuous use. The Bose immersion feature is a gimmick, and it's distracting. If you turn 90 degrees in either direction, the original front is still front. Nice trick. Turn 180 degrees to "look" behind you... when you turn back, the "stage" just moved 90 degrees. This would be very distracting while walking around. Not sure what the point is anyway. The immersive sound is interesting, but sounds weird/over-processed. XM5's clarity is way better, especially, after adjusting the EQ to your liking. Go try 'em on and listen. Compare. Everyone is different. That said, my vote goes to Sony. (I also liked the plain QC non-ultras a bit better than the Ultras, because the foam is not as thick and doesn't push my ears forward as much.) BYW, the foam openings are just about as wide and tall on all the Sony and Bose options. Only foam thickness and firmneas seems to vary. Maybe also the underhang. (I.e. there seems to be more room under the Bose cushions, which seems to allow the back of my ears to get under them more easily and wedge them outward. I like most of the Sony attributes and features better, but I will admit that the ANC on the Bose seems a bit (but not much) stronger.
XM5s have to be the most uncomfortable pair of headphones I've ever tried to wear. That's just me. The Bose QC Ultra are soooo comfy but I noticed my ears did get a touch warm after a while. I have XM4s to pick up tomorrow's to try as well. Jury still out.

I had Denon and tried Bose Ultra in a store. It seems to me that the ultras, immersion mode is a bit better than Denon's, because they have bigger drives and shape of over ear headphones, which cover your entire ears. As sound quality, I think both sound great. Maybe Denon is a bit clearer, and the sound is tuned for your individual ear, with the AAT. If the money is no object, I'd go for Bose because it has better ANC and comfort.
The bose quiet comfort (not ultra) sounds great. Even compared to the sonys at best buy. I thought the bose qc sound much better. The soundstage is great. Better instrument separation. And the bass is definitely still there, especially when turned up in eq. The bose sound fantastic, not muddied down with bass up and very clear and you get a good seal/noise canceling. And the moonstone blue color is gorgeous.

I don’t understand the point of head tracking. Why would I want to feel like I’m listening to music on speakers across the room? I want the music to follow me which is why I’m wearing headphones and not using speakers.

As far as i can tell, sound quality doesnt change with ANC modes.
As he said only sony allows you to turn off anc but even then sony apply too much dsp. If you really want best sound go with wired iems(thieaudio, 7hz, etc) & then use something like fiio btr7 or ear hooks bt receivers they will blow anything wireless headphones out of water for sheer sound quality. If you want wireless headphones & great sound currently audeze maxwell are the only truly great sound in a wireless headphones. Any anc headphone won't sound good for the money.

I found the active noise cancellation test results strange. Based on the tests carried out and shown in the video, the performance of the Sony XM5 (minute 6:00 to 6:04) is worse than the Sony XM4 (minute 6:05 to 6:10). This is the first time I've seen the active noise cancellation of the XM4 be better than the XM5. This result is very strange. Always, in every analysis I've seen, the XM5 performs much better than the XM4. Please, help me to understand this result!

XM5 is better, i had a pair of Xm4s and wanted to upgrade. I got the Bose QC ultra. They were comfortable. But the bass wasn’t as punchy as the xm4 and the highs were abit shrilly. The noise cancelation, was worse than the Xm4, i walk daily. I noticed right away on the first walk i could hear the cars passing by much more i could hear people talking behind me something i never would notice with the XM4. I retuned the Bose after 3 days got the XM5 and wow way less car noise when the pass even better than the XM4. Don’t by the hype these QC ultra are. Just all marketing. Last point, the touch volume control suck massively. And double click to skip forward was more admin than needed, xm5 touch controls far easier.
Why are not the AirPod Max included in the comparison?
Only thing I really care about is sound quality, but the trebble on all 3 are hurting my ears just through the phone. Hope that can be turned down enough

At last someone is talking about ANC on human voices. They are the triggers for sure. Well, now I know why I never got the XM5s. I did buy the Bose Ultras, but I didn't like them. Not bad, but at AUD$649, I didn't like the build quality and figured I could break them. I am going back to earbuds and now getting the Technics AZ80s. No hype, just getting the job done.

So with my QC ultras I havent been able to get noise cancelling to do as well as any TH-cam video. And they are so tiny. Though they aint any AKG 712 headphone they are nice to have - wish they had water resistance though.
I’m confused by what you mean about turning off ANC? I simply press and hold a button on my QC Ultras and can go into Aware mode which is turning off ANC… also there is a transparency mode which works miles better than the XM5s I owned before 🤔
If you are in a reasonably quiet room there is no need for noise cancelling, so it would be nice to be able to turn off ANC, to get rid of the white noise sound, and to save battery, while still maintaining a little bit of passive noise cancelling.

With some holiday gift money I also bought the QC Ultra today and they are WAY more comfortable than the QC45s I have and now I think they are really on par with the new Sony XM5s I just got on Christmas Eve. You just can't go wrong here, especially with both.
I think I need to start selling off some of my stock. With 16 pairs, I think my collection is redundant now. 🤦🏻♂️
I had to make a decision today. I wanted to add either the XM5 or Ultra to my 14 headset arsenal. After comparing how much more I like my XM4s than my Quiet comfort 45s, I went with the XM5 and I'm not disappointed. They are amazing.
This was strictly personal, because oddly enough the world thinks the Bose QC45s are the most comfortable, but I actually find the Sony fits my head better and is significantly more comfortable.
That being said, I'll probably add the Ultras in January at my birthday🤦🏻♂️.

I bought the xm5 a few days ago I must say they're perfect. Also I would recommend to get FLAC audio to really feel the music.

More than the format however, the mastering matters.
I upgraded from the 700 to the ultra, the ANC on the ultra is king 👑, I’ll be using the ultras for traveling because they easy to carry.

From my searching, the XM4's have better base output than the XM5's, although the XM5 does have a bit cleaner sound than its predecesor. If it is base you want, probably the Ult Wear would have more base and cost less while still having respectable sound, and does have some similarities to the XM5 in terms of noise canceling. For spanish rock and hip hop I think if you're thinking budget decide between the Ult Wear and the XM4, but if you have the money and want more crisp audio go for the XM5.

There must be something wrong with your test. Only yesterday I compared XM4 with XM5 in a loud shop and the XM5 were definitely reducing all kind of noise, especially talking, much better than the XM4. In your test it seems like the XM5 are much weaker in noise reduction

ANC in the xM5s is very unreliable. It adjusts intensity automatically and there's no way to switch it off. The xm4s will have stronger and more consistent noise cancelling in more environments and it won't drop off randomly
as truck driver. speaking in phone true headphones in noisy car hapen almoust every day so the mic is big deal.

It will get damaged if exposed to high levels of moisture without drying thoroughly. Cushions will go bad even faster.
I sold my XM5's for the Bose based on the reviews on TH-cam. The Bose sounds great but, but, but on S23 Ultra they are not as good as the XM5 with LDAC. XM5 sound is impressive expecially with the right EQ settings. I'm a Hip Hop & R&B person so that may play a factor. Samsung doesn't allow aptx so that's a bummer for me. Because of this the Sony's just sound better to me. I did sell my WFXM5 earbuds for the Bose Ultra earbuds though. The Bose buds bass just out thumps the Sony's. And the fit is so much better. With these I don't even care about the LDAC codec. It doesn't matter in this instance, the Bose are better.
Also I'm using Apple Music all Loseless or Dolby audio downloaded songs on the S23 Ultra and iPhone 15 pro.

Xm5 still overall the kings. The mic performance alone is great. But the fast charging, far better battery life, can turn off anc & still extend the use of the headphones, also no nc pressure, most importantly ldac vastly more supported by many devices especially Samsung. Also not to mention the Sony app is just insane. & eq is far better than bose.
I don't know if Bose has NC issues but the Sony does for years already. Screaming noise coming out of the speakers. This issue started with the 4th generation as fas as I know
As for if this problem is on the XM5, I can confidently say no, my XM5 are nearly a year old and no issues whatsoever!

Don't forget the XM5 which I sleep with are far more comfortable overall and they sound legitimately 5000% times better than anything Bose has ever created, period.

I have worn out the XM4s and XM5s until the headphone port broke or the noise canceling function stopped working but that's extreme long term use. The XM5s don't have the same problems, they are built way tougher. No problems at all and I don't know anyone with issues. Number One noise canceling headphones in the world 4 years in a row baby.
I’m ve been sporting my XM4 for a while now. But I just moved over to the apple ecosystem with a MacBook Pro purchase and unfortunately the XM4’s quality deteriorates big time on MacBook apparently it’s an issue with some app trying to access my mic and causing a conflict between the Mac identifying the xm4 as in headset mode va headphone mode any way wonder if the xm5 or Bose QC ultra have this issue

Looks like the Airpods Pro are still the best choice for me compared to any of these headphones. I was super tempted by the Bose but the mic sounds soooo bad. And I really dont like the audio of the XM4 / XM5, plus the fact that the box of the XM5 is super big. And let's not forget the price. For 400EUR, I want the best and nothing else. Airpods Pro for 250EUR have more to offer from my point of view (super sound quality, better transparency, very good ANC, and easy to bring anywhere with you).
I have XM5 and my brother just bough the ULTRA and they don't sound like your sound quality test at all. In fact I would say you inverted them. Your XM5 recording sounds more on the base than ULTRA but in reality ULTRA highs are horrible.

I returned the Bose QC Ultra because their sound was not impressive. I also own the Beats Studio Pro and the XM5. Sony has the best sound by far. With the XM5 you Feel the music, Bose made me feel Nothing.

the soundstage of bose is unbeatable. Sony's soundtage is comparatively muffled up/dull to bose. Bose separates each sound beautifully.
And Bose qc ultras has ANC on par with AP max in terms of quantitative attenuation in every range , I guess every pair of ear works different thus people have got varying preferences
