You make it sound so simple… but there are so many other factors in a person’s life that make a Smart Sleep Plan difficult or impossible, and it makes me feel guilty that I’m not able to “Just do it!”
    There’s:
•Kids and pets who wake you up throughout the night or generally interfere with your sleep schedule
•Mental Health and/or (General health) issues and various prescription meds that are intended to help you overall, but disrupt your quality of sleep
    •Going through Perimenopause/Menopause!!
    •Substance abuse/addiction
•Low socioeconomic status: can’t afford a decent space or routine to ensure a good night’s rest
•Shift workers who rely on better income from working nights, or 2 jobs
We just need to recognize that it’s much easier for some than others to get good sleep, and not judge people who would love to fall asleep and stay asleep so easily. ❤

I just finished Dr. Scott's book "For When Everything is Burning". If you have benefitted from his videos, go get this book. Don't think about it. Don't put it on the list. Go get it. I have read tons of books about mental health and find that most of them, though well intentioned, are filled with vague commentaries, lots of useless platitudes, but offer no practical steps to improving the situation between my ears. This book is different in that it is full of specific, actionable suggestions that you can begin applying immediately. I can't recommend it enough. I listened to it on Audible so, if you're not a big reader, you can access it that way. Thank you Dr. Scott! My hope for a better future took a huge leap forward before I had even finished your wonderful book.

Yes! I love listening to, and watching his videos, specifically because he does explain things so deeply and thoroughly. He's helped me understand myself better, and has given me some new vocabulary that has been helpful in trying to explain to my husband how I feel and describe what it does to me. Physically, mentally and emotionally.❤

With CPTSDI I was incapable of falling asleep at all. Ever. I would go as far as 5 straight days then have to go to the Emergency Room because I was hallucinating and totally dysfunctional. I tried everything from the Sleep Disorders Center, to over the counter drugs, to prescription to street drugs or alcohol and WAY overdid everything. I was told it was all in my head. I said, "No shit!! That I know, I just don't know how to get it out. I was on high alert all day and night for nearly 20 years. Sleep hygiene is so important... Setting up a habit at the end of every day is so important to help you transition from the waking day to being asleep. He is so correct...not getting enough sleep chronically along with mental health issues is deadly in the long run. Now, at 62 years of age, I have learned to prepare for sleep 2 hours prior to the time I need to go asleep including getting ready for bed (washing your face etc), reading a book for a bit, and generally winding down toward sleep...the goal. Have a sleep schedule...1000%. Don't ever give up on sleeping better...sleep truly is critIcal to better health. This guy truly is right and I recommend you hear what he is saying and doing what he recommends as it relates to you. His book is truly eye opening!

There are times I am sitting on my bed, getting ready for sleep, the next thing I know, it's morning, and I'm still fully clothed. I'm laying crosswise on the bed with no idea what happened. I also feel like I got hit by the truck I was running after all night. Until now I thought it was okay, as long as I got some sleep. Now I know, it's as horrible of an idea as I feel when I wake up. I will work harder on my sleep. I would love to drift off to sleep, not get thrown into it! Thank you for always telling the hard truths, even though it's sometimes tough to hear.🤝💜

At 75 I trusted medical doctors. Niw I am dependent on a Benzodiazepine .,clonazepam aka klonopin. I have terrible insomnia and NEVER get to sleep before 8am. I go to bed by 11pm and lay un the dark silence, then its 4am, 6am 7am.

Did benzos for sleep also. Clonazepam 1 mg. nightly as prescribed. If you decide to go off clonazepam, TAPER OFF VERY SLOWLY or you may go through "benzo hell" I lost my meds while traveling & went off "cold turkey". This caused unimaginably terrible withdrawals, including worse insomnia, tremors, burning tingling pins & needles skin sensations, inner restlessness, horrific nightmares, constant ringing in the ears, memory loss/poor cognition, feeling like you are not yourself, anxiety, anhedonia, deep depression...yea, a real nightmare scenario. And don't expect much help from your prescriber--they will tell you these side effects could not possibly be caused by the benzodiazapine! Gaslighting at its finest.
This medication never was meant for long-term use, due to dependency problems.
2 Yeats off clonazepam and still suffering. Be careful! I don't have the words to adequately describe this hellish nightmare...avoid it at all costs...your life may depend on it.

For me, my Apple Watch has helped in this regard massively. I have ADHD so forming routines and sticking to them is a huge struggle and the watch helps me with creating and sticking to routines said around my fitness, overall health and *sleep.*.
In regards to sleep, I now wind down properly before bed time, I have clear goals with how much I need to sleep and I wake up gently in the morning instead of to a loud alarm. I get my 7-8 hours which I did not get before and I feel so much better for it.

Thank you for this, it is timely. I’ve been struggling the last two weeks, as I try to re-adapt my body from relying on marijuana to fall asleep (perhaps wrongly attributing it to “turning my brain off” to asleep). It’s been a stressful time with trying to get my affairs in order after a big move, especially with anxiety and an avoidant personality that would just rather not deal with the DMV and such, and it is hard to keep my thoughts from constantly churning. I will have to try these strategies (and more thoroughly follow the ones I’m already trying to do).

After moving across country, it was a nightmare, and I did it so very painfully sober.
Know that you have got this, I believe in you and I know you can get through this. You already are everything you need, you don't just have it, but you ARE IT, and always have been.

What about going to bed at differing times but getting up at the exact same time 7 days per week? Does that result in the same benefits as *going to sleep* at the same time but waking up at differing times?

I don't sleep well. I wake up a lot because I worry about 😴 through alarms. Dreams are often frustrating and disturbing. Benadryl or Nyquill sometimes help but often leave me groggy in the morning.

Is it ok to need 9-10 hours of sleep a night? Im bipolar and i feel any less I'm exhausted. I used to use a cpap but had surgeries and now don't need it anymore. But i still think i function best on avout 10 hours

It's very normal, you're ok. If you can get it, go for it. I'm the same way, and all my adult life have been shamed about it but the reality is we all have different bodies. Rest when you need to, not when people tell you you should.

Hi Dr. Scott. I'm having trouble with going to sleep early without 'passing out' because I have chronic depression and when I'm not exhausted yet, my brain just wanders around in bed. Thinking about my life, thinking about the world. This often makes me unable to sleep too. I have experienced so many times just rolling around in bed for an hour still unable to fall asleep, and in the end I both got not enough sleep AND my mood ruined because of my own thoughts.
I want to have good sleep hygiene. I really do. But the wandering thoughts are making that extremely difficult, and that's why I used the 'passing out' method. But then it just becomes a feedback loop because I don't get good enough sleep.
Do you have any advice on how to solve this problem?

I stay up until I'm ready to drop instantly into sleep because I have some kind of fear that wells up when I think about being asleep; it makes us so vulnerable. I guess I should address that, lol. Any ideas?

Thank you! I have struggled with sleep since I was a little kid. Insomnia, night terrors, nightmares, sleepwalking. But now as an adult I heavily rely on alcohol to fall asleep. It is more just passing out from alcohol instead of eal sleep and the next morning I wake up to chaos and sometimes no memory of how I got there, which makes my OCD ten times worse, because my brain fills the time I can't remember with horrible images. I have also taken seroquel for sleep, but it makes the nightmares worse. So thank you for your advise.

I recently stopped taking the fast acting version of seroquel and my nightmares have gone away but now I often feel like I'm only half asleep. Like I have some level of awareness all night.

Do you have any advice for night shift workers? I have a hard time sleeping during the day, especially in a house full of people who are awake. I switched to nights because I have insomnia so figured I might as well work while I can’t sleep anyways. But I have a hard time sleeping during the day. Sometimes I’ll be awake for 2-3 days straight. It’s that bad. I also work 12-15 hour shifts. I’ve considered switching to working day shifts just to improve my quality of life. I’m constantly exhausted, fatigued, no energy to accomplish anything, I’m overweight, and depressed. Help!

Injections for mental health could assist with the sleep issue. You should not have the pico, the eating cotton balls and sand. Mothers will assist with the sleep issue.

This guy presents like an amateur. What type of doctor is he? An MD, a DO, a chiropractor, a Ph.D, a dentist? (I suggest that he list his credentials / bio somewhere in the notes.) He's obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed.
