The love and care that went into creating this video is clear from the start. Before long my focus shifted from someone wanting to learn more about the game, to instead, wanting only to experience the way in which that information was revealed. The time spent on the script alone is obvious without the content coming off as obnoxious. The best compliment I can offer is to say that by the end I was less engaged by the content of the game and more so by that of the reviewer.

Hey, Skillup, as a kickstarter backer, I've been following this game, and it's surrounding media, religiously, for it's entire seven year run-time. I have to say, your review just now was one among the most poignant, and striking reviews I've seen of the project; one that completely nails the heart of the game. As a life-long Kentuckian resident, this game speaks to _me_ in ways that are incredibly personal, and hard to articulate. On those dark summer nights, out in your deteriorating nothing-town, crickets buzzing, it's entirely possible to imagine seeing something out there in the dark, to imagine following it, and to imagine never coming back. I really felt that you have absolutely nailed the impossible task of discussing this project in it's entirety, without ruining the appeal of this incomprehensible web of mystery, magic, and mundanity - and I just want to say thank you for any and all attention you've brought to this game, and the experiences within, for other people to experience for the first time.

All right man it’s official: I frequent about 10 various TH-cam review channels for various video game-related content, but there is nobody, and I do mean NOBODY, who can single-handedly weave a desire into my heart and soul to play some video game I’ve never heard of.
Other channels and personalities can relieve a tension or worry I might have about the quality of this game or that, or perhaps they may introduce me to some content I was previously unaware of, and make it seem rather appealing - but there’s nobody else I have found that can almost make me feel BAD that I haven’t played some gem previously hidden or unknown to me. There’s no other review video in which I have found myself at various points throughout it, feeling compelled to immediately stop what I’m doing and go buy and download some random game, knowing that tomorrow I’ll most likely forget I ever watched the video in the first place. Yet it seems like I find myself feeling this compulsion with every other video I watch.
You have a true gift, and I really hope you choose to use your powers for good while you exist on this mortal coil.

the "art form" of gaming is rarely explored by cerebral indie games similar to this. instead they operate on a cinematic or literary level to shortcut their way to an aesthetic response from the player. dunno if Kentucky Route Zero falls into this category but Shill Up doesn't say anything to make me less skeptical of it.

    "Bruh." XD
    Kudos.
    What a fitting review.
I sometimes struggle to explain to people what videogames are to me, and why I love them. The idea is too expansive to really nail down in a conversation. I can try to explain this massive pastime to an uninitiated loved one, but then they might become puzzled observing me playing a competitive shooter one night, a collectible card game the next, and KRZ the next.
All that is to say I think you have done KRZ a fine service here. Not all these games, if we can even call them that, are even comparable. Instead of trying to articulate what it is and set it to a rubric, you've instead opted to try and evoke what Kentucky Route Zero makes you feel.
This is dope as hell and I am saving it to show people when this topic of wtf-is-videogames arises. Thanks

Such a good review, I'm so happy to ever have discovered your channel back in division days. I have just finished this game, because I saw you made a video on it and it has been on my wishlist for years. Checking back for the review, it delivered the feel of the game so well and yes rating bar reflects that: it's not for everybody, I'm just glad you brought light to it. Keep it up man, it's hard to find such polished, diverse and *different* channel like yours, hats off.

I feel like this was a "game" you couldn't properly explain in a normal review, so you tried to recreate the experience. I was not a fan of this video, but that merely tells me that I won't like the game. You clearly enjoyed the game, which is good, and I'm glad you found a way to explain what the game was without having to resort to vague things like, "I really liked this game, but I can see how many people wouldn't."

KRZ in tone is a semi lucid dream where for the most part everything is normal except some very bizzare detail, detail you won't even think to question until you finally wake. Its a mystical trip through old Americana that definitely rewards stopping and smelling the burning tree that's always on fire.
Top that off its also got great sound design its almost a adventure game designed for the blind with how detailed it can get.

This reminds me of the way people like Jacob Geller talk about video games. Video games, like all art, are reflections of emotion. Mechanics, story, graphics, etc., are all secondary to the way a game makes you feel. A "good" game uses those tools in order to illicit specific emotions from a player.
A lot of people in the comments seem to be critical of this Geller-esque style of review, but I am all for it. Esotericism seems to be the secret ingredient reviewers need to be comfortable diving deep into how media makes them feel, so I say; bring it on

And that's why you're my favourite video game reviewer. You understand and are ready to analyze videogames as an artform before an entertainment media and you do it beautifully and artistically.
I will keep this game in mind and maybe play it, maybe send it to one of my more art-oriented, less videogame inclined friend. Thank you for this review i loved it.

Best Skill Up review yet. The way the video was presented forced me to think about questions I normally wouldn't have when watching a review. It caused me to think far more deeply and critical than I am normally used to in a TH-cam video. Typically, a video is made for consumption, but this video I did not consume. I had something like a back and forth relationship of asking questions and receiving answers but also more questions. It may be a bit more dense and require more thinking than a typical review, but I appreciated that. If I just wanted a scored answer or some game-play-only-perspective I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much and I would understand the game far less. Good job!
