  • This is the first episode in a new series of "How To" style videos that we will be posting on Wednesdays. We are going to be installing and testing out a NACA Duct Headlight Cover from Carbon Miata. Will this headlight intake drop my intake air temperatures, or is this just another all form, no function mod?

    There were some questions about how my coolant temp changed with the intakes, so I'll sticky this at the top. You can also see them on the KTuner log window as "ECT" (Engine Coolant Temperature) to the lower left of the IAT reading.
    Intake Air Temp vs. Coolant Temp
    Run 1: Headlights Down - 189°, Headlights Up - 187°
    Run 2: Headlights Down - 187°, Headlights Up - 187°

    I think it was hotter because on the first run your engine was a lot colder. As you said in the video, you touched the radiator and it was still hot, so I think that is what impacted the temperature.

      Engine/coolant temps were the same run to run, I made sure of it.

    Bending out a heat shield to cover the filter and gold taping it would help a lot, though without a metal brake its going to be job to build. However that would probably be the best thing to lower the iats.

      I agree. There just isn’t a whole lot of space. Also with the turbo next year and the intake on the other side, I’m not sure it’s worth the effort.

    Cool. Been planning to install a cold air filter with it ending up in exactly the same place as yours and am buying a couple of these (I prefer it remaining symetrical) and this tells me it will work, thanks!

    • @NappMotorsports
      @NappMotorsports  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      K swap or BP? Either way, these are great. I wish I had a use for one with the turbo setup but there’s really no need.

      @@NappMotorsports Just the vented covers. i was planning to put in a cold air intake, into exactly the same position as yours, right behind where the vent will be, exactly the same. So this tells me it should work quite well. Thanks!
      I'm in the UK, so will just have to cut a gap through that black plastic, like you mentioned. I haven't looked yet, but I'm presuming there is one on mine.

  • @K.O.I_WORK

    The iat May be higher now with them up since the air that was getting rammed under and around the light is escaping from the new vent. Just an idea and a bit of a double edged sword if it’s the case. At least it did actually improve the headlight down temps. That’s how I drive most the time as well and have been thinking about getting this since the stock engine and rad doesn’t run very cool to begin with. Stoked to see the progress on this. I’ve always wanted to k swap my Miata but I’ve never had the money or dedication to save up haha

    • @NappMotorsports
      @NappMotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I definitely think it has to do with the airflow around the NACA duct, but headlights down is what matters.

  • @hogquaffer4741
    @hogquaffer4741 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Afraid that won't do much at all - the inner surfaces of the intake need to be sharper, and the walls must be at a 90* angle. Rounded edges like that allow the airflow to separate, further reducing the duct's efficiency (about 50% of a conventional inlet), and allowing uneven flow in crosswinds. Headlight intakes seem to be a good idea, but outside of custom jobs they don't seem to be done too well.

    • @NappMotorsports
      @NappMotorsports  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean if you watch the video, it did help with IAT’s.

    I think it’d be kinda interesting to try a Randall cowl intake for this setup. Might be cramped and awkward but I’d think it’d help with bringing the IATs down.

    Great vid! Curious if you’re familiar with the “Zoom Headlight intake” it looks better IMO and has a bigger air inlet. It would be interesting to see a comparison and if there’s any temp improvements with a full width inlet dumping even more fresh air over the air intake.

    Interesting, thanks for adding some data! Is the carbon Miata lid an actual “NACA” duct? It’s not specified on the website, and there are other vendors that do. Wondering if that could make a difference in flow.

    • @NappMotorsports
      @NappMotorsports  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn’t have the sharp edges that are typically seen in a NACA duct, so it possibly could be less effective.
