My theory is that the mom did the "thing" with a bat creature similar to the boy. She got pregnant and kept it a secret convincing the husband it was his. After the child was born and grew older, the dad realised the child looked very "different"from the other kids and confronts his wife about it. She confesses what she did. He gets mad and murders her and keeps the boy (who he now knows isnt his) in the basement.

IMO the child was completely in the right. At least ignoring the ending where he kills people. It seems like, to me at least, that the father killed his wife in a drunken rage, with the only witness being his son, so he locked him in the basement. I think the child somehow gained the powers through the dreams, rather than having dreams and instantly knowing how to use his latent vampire magic. It also seems like the father had no idea that the child was becoming more monsterous, as he seemed surprised by his child growing in size and spitting acid at him. I think that what happened is the father killed the mother, locked the kid in the basement, the kid got powers somehow, then the ending is decided by the player. So, IMO, the father was the real monster.

I hypothesize that the father's actions are closely related to his descent into alcoholism. He probably made the right call to keep his son in the basement but ended up abusing him due to his drinking. It would explain in the one ending where he killed himself after he took the life of the other person that he still cares about as I believe he didn't intend to kill his wife.

It’s a case of: “do I value humans over this supposedly inhuman creature” or “do I think every sentient thing deserves decency, thus the father is a POS” ultimately, the game asks you whether the knowledge of the boy being a monstrous creature and having strange powers warrants the father’s abuse, when you were likely hating the father from the beginning. The idea that the child killed his mother though is in my opinion, faulty. Also, the fact doesn’t change that in every interaction, the father is the aggressor, in ending two he created the monster the boy ended up becoming.

Yeah, that was a bot much, especially because it most likely isn't the story meant to be told.
I will not say that I know the developers intentions, but in a more realistic take is that the child may be mentally handicapped or something along those lines and the father and the kids are too ignorant to the child's needs.
Honesty, if it was because the child was handicapped, the game still paints that in a horrible light, idk.

Yea honestly when he said that I felt really disgusted. Just because your child has “deformities” doesn’t mean you get to kill your wife and lock up your son and constantly beat him. Like in this case the boy was actually supernatural but him killing his father and the bullies was because of their abuse, not because he had no concept of right or wrong. He obviously did, with forgiving Smelly: “i am not my father”

I'm so, SO glad you covered this. I watched a playthrough of this really gorgeous game a while ago.
As someone who suffered through similar trauma as this throughout my lifetime, it was very easy to get sucked into the narrative and the survival-esc situation that it posed... even if there were a few... odd moments.
The game is ultimately very depressing and horrifying in it's own regard, and portrays that sense of helplessness really well, especially with how whenever you make the simplest mistake or noise, you face near immediate repercussions in the form of your father- whom one would assume would be the first you could trust in a situation like this- abusing you relentlessly, until you are knocked unconscious by his beatings or simply sleeping away the pain and ache. From the start to the end, I really felt this game.
It may not be even close to a masterpiece, nor nearing one of the best games out there; but it does what it claims to achieve very well, and it does it some justice in itself.

My theory is that the father didn’t keep the boy in the basement for the child’s safety, I believe the father feared and hated the boy for how he looked and what he could do. The father even said (in a display with father rat and momma rat) to the mother,” Look at the spawn you’ve given me!” Also, the guy was just plain abusive and probably did kill the mom since the kid didn’t have his powers yet.
In short terms, the dad was an abusive coward who sucked major time. The son was unfortunately born different than others so he was mistreated and abused. The mom was scared for her life, and because of small “mistakes,” she died by domestic violence.

It seems alot of the comments are ignoring that the kid probably looked like a monster from at least some kinda puberty or something. And maybe the mother was also a monster just undercover untill the dad found out and freaked out. Fear and embarrassment can make people do horrible things, especially to things not human. Makes sense why he gave him low quality food and beat him when he got into stuff or made to much noise. Alot of people do that to dogs. It's even a common trope in anime that humans are illogically creul to anything not labeled as human (and if you go even further real life). But then again, human or not, nothing deserves abuse if it hasn't earned it. Super powers, having bat puberty, or whatever. You could still have a loving relationship even if isolated untill further notice.
The kids probably looked down there, got scared, and wanted him to just die. Humans man, just mean.

This one gets to me. My biological father was a piece of trash who ended up being 2 counts of child abuse, 1 of child neglect, and 1 of spousal abuse. He did a lot of awful things and even now as a grown woman, I still keep a weapon in my bedroom out of habit. If I don’t, I can’t sleep, I feel too exposed. I also have issues moving away from my family because often times, when I would try, that bastard would show back up and I’d return to help my mother and sister. I can’t stress this enough, if you notice a family who seems to have an abusive member, call DSS or the law. It is never “not your business”, that’s called bystander effect and it’s just as bad as joining in on the abuse. Again I say, IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING, you very well may end up helping someone more than you thought it would

this is the first time I completely disagreed with your take on a games story. the way I see it, the boy had some sort of disability growing up to cause the abusive father to chain him in the basement, the father was in absolutely no way right to do that. no wonder he grew up to be a serial killer because his father did that to him (not saying that this happens in real life, just a stereotype) I think people are trying to take this in some sort of supernatural direction but I see it as very raw and real. but thats just how I take it, especially as someone who had an abusive father as well. there are going to be some exaggerated bits like the acid and growing to an extreme size in the end, but thats so this story would translate better into a game

It's nearly worse that no one seems to care until he's dead, because if the kids knew he was trapped and were bullying him the adults probably did too :((

If I am the developer of the game, I would remove the part where the child got the supernatural abilities. He will just be a plain boy locked by his abusive father in their basement. The aim of the game is to either acquire help outside their house or stealth/brute-force his way out his abusive situation. To acquire help, I am thinking of acquiring skills such as writing. After crafting a sufficient note that could inform someone of his situation and location, he will use his companion Smelly because it was shown in the game that Smelly can go outside, right? Basically, it will be about about acquiring human skills to escape. I think that would be a much better concept because child domestic violence is a real thing that happens to millions of children around the world. Initially, I honestly found the idea of this game deeply horrifying and compelling for the social issue it tried to address. But the ending showing that the child is literally a monster made me question the emotions I felt throughout the game. It suddenly left me dissociated from the protagonist.

I have a separate take, I feel that somethings take place in his imagination, climbing on walls, fighting monsters, and becoming a giant to scare his dad. I think the venom part could be true but in another sense, he's trapped in a basement, possibly with chemicals he's never seen before, one day he gets more curious than normal and realizes what they are, he then uses them in each ending. (Thowing them on the father and burning him, buring the metal bars, ect.) The "bat-boy" thing is probably because he's pale and sickly because of his time locked away and starved.

    • @jorienwachukwu466
      @jorienwachukwu466 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I was thinking the same thing. People seem to take the whole monster thing as being actually true, but I think it's more symbolic than anything.
From what can be seen throughout the game, and the child's pov, I think it's possible they were abused because of their appearance. In the display with the rats, the father says "Look at the spawn you’ve given me!” This could mean that the child was physically deformed, or that they had a disability of some sort. The father was ashamed and embarrassed at having a kid that wasn't "normal" and started mistreating the child and the mother. Then I'm thinking that, after God knows how long of dealing with the abuse, the mother had gotten tired of her husband's actions and tried to leave with the child, but the father caught them and killed the mother (either by accident or on purpose). Then, like the coward he is, he locked the child in the basement and continued to abuse them. The father possibly even blamed the child for their mother's death as a rationalization for his treatment, as many abusive parents will often use the death of their partner to justify their abuse, especially if the partner died when the child was born.
As the child spends possibly years of the inhumane treatment, from the father and from the other children in the neighborhood, they begin to become bitter and hateful, their mind delving into dark territory, which is where the dreams come in with the child gaining powers. They're to symbolize the child becoming twisted by negativity and becoming more and more monstrous as time goes on. Then, after Smelly's death, the child loses their one tether to humanity and just completely loses themselves to their hatred, figuratively transforming into a monster. Then, after killing the father, the child goes on to murder the other children who had tormented them and laughed at their suffering, ultimately becoming a serial killer.
The whole game is just symbolic of how monsters are created by the environment they are brought up in. People like to think that people are just born as psychotic killers and monsters, and some of them are. But many are made into monsters because the people around them, for whatever reason, decided to treat them like they were garbage, with no decency or respect or love.

In some ways I think this game sends the message that you can't judge a book by its cover and even if look or are a monster, the real monsters are based on one's actions rather than their identity or how they look. The child only became a monster after taking out his revenge on others while the father was already one for abusing his family.

Yes, the boy became a monster and killed people, but he's still a child and children don't really know right from wrong. His father on the other hand, knew what he was doing and abused him and possibly fed him animal food.

Personal theory: the dad was abusive to the mom, maybe angry that "she gave him a monster son" (awful way of thinking, but it could've been his thought process). The mom, in the mean time, though loving and caring, made money by taking him to fairs and exposing him as a "freak", thus why the kids know that he is a bat boy. The murder could have happened in one of two ways:
    1) the dad murdered the mom, as the kid narrates, either because he didn't want the mother to expose his son anymore, now matter how much of a "monster" he was (giving way to the protection theory), or just out of rage.
    2) the son was the culprit, by accident, vomiting acid on her.
Over all, very interesting game! Also whoever voiced the kid did an incredible job, holy shit it was brutal.

Great story, very dumb ending. It would have been a lot better if the kid was trying to cope with his situation by imagining he has super powers and such. Would have made it significantly more relatable and much more impactful than this bat boy story. This twists the narratives from a deep psychological trauma and cool concept to: haha bat boy goes brrrrrrrr. Father was trapping monster *clap* *clap*

Hard disagree, I thought this ending was really interesting and while your idea is neat too, I think the original game's ending is great too. Although to be fair, that's probably a large part because I'm an absolute sucker for any "sympathetic/protagonist monster" stories.

I think the husband killed wife cuz I think the wife loved her child so much she wouldn’t want anyone to take him away from her so the husband did the rational thing and killed his wife and he couldn’t handle the guilt so he took it out on his son usually abuse so that’s what I think what happened.

How is murder the rational thing lol? They could've just homeschooled their child and kept him hidden until he learned to properly control his powers. I think the mother was also part bat and got unexpectedly pregnant with the father. Maybe they thought about being a family but when they saw that the kid turned out more bat than human, the father turned bitter and turned to drinking. He probably accidentally killed the mother in a past beating and then focused all that abuse on his child.

If you’re going to make a game about child abuse, make a game about child abuse. The bat boy reveal in the endings is interesting but it takes the “oomph” out of the entire thing for me. Tons of children go through this all the time. R, I know you cover horror games but next time *please* throw in trigger warnings. I legit cried when Smelly died and the boy was howling over his death.

  • @WolfyFancyLads
    @WolfyFancyLads 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

From what I gather, ending 2 is likely only the bullies and father who died. As he showed compassion, and clearly likes cats in the first ending, he likely punished the bullies. Our knowledge of the bullies is very limited, so I have a theory: The boy is born odd for whatever reason, and in the game he seems to be VERY young, we're talking maybe 5-6 from his drawings and crying. At this age, kids start being painfully cruel, but they can also respond with violence if upset or hurt by someone, so it's possible he started developing an odd appearance and may have been in contact with the children at some point, such as trying to play with them in the garden. They in turn could've lashed out, bullied him, and made his parents realize the world will hate him, sealing their fate should he escape as he would remember the hurt and retaliate as a child does.
The mother loves her son regardless, but the father can't handle the stress of work and of a freak child. He starts to drink, more and more over time, till one day he comes home and gets angry. His wife defends her son, maybe even threatening to leave as his spite grows stronger and stronger. He gets mad. REALLY mad. Maybe mad enough to try kill the boy. He lashes out, but kills the wrong person in his drunken stupor, as the mother tries to defend the child but merely gets her skull split by a metal bat instead. The boy sees this and is horrified, the father blames the son because "if you were never born, she'd still be alive". He beats him, locks him up, because he resents him and wants him to suffer, drinking himself to death in the process. At the end of the game, when his son mutates, he panics and realizes he won't be able to beat him anymore, fearing for his life.
But, in ending 3, when he kills the boy, he realizes... There's no one left to blame. Alone with his thoughts, his son and wife dead by his own hands, realizing that he's killed both and suddenly seeing clearly for the first time in his life, he turns the gun on himself. No amount of alcohol can wash away his sins now. He can drink to forget, but he will always remember. He pulls the trigger and the last of the family is gone.
It's just a theory, but I like to think it holds water quite well.

I'm fully convinced that the poor kid gaining supernatural powers (climbing, jumping, spitting acidic vomit) is based off children making up revenge fantasies against their abusive parents, where they imagine themselves as monsters or heroes while the abusive parent is the villain or the weaker monster itself.

the moans and groans of the child when he finds his dead cat and being chained if awful, he goes through an awful condition with his face, being bullied, in an unsafe housing space, no mother, no great food, no education, a drunk dad and being inhumane, his drawings cant even be on paper, practically being around a basement with metal items that can fall oon him. its truly sad.

Keeping the child away from people makes sense if he's a bat like monster, but abusing him is completely wrong in any sense. He didn't deserve to be beaten and starved everyday. Maybe if he had been shown love, raised properly and taught about the world he may not have gone out and killed people after finally being free

When I was younger (5-7 year old) my mom went on a work delegation abroad. I was left with my dad that has beaten me up in various ocasions, and not letting me out of the room. I had a degu ive got when i was 6, but he has stabbed it with a knife at my own eyes. When my mother came back, she divorced my dad and now im free because of her, still with many bruises and trauma.

Dialogue I have for the three endings.
    Ending 1:
You've done it son. I'm proud of you.
I never wanted to beat you... I got consumed by my own addiction.
That's on me boy. And the beatings. And the dog food.
You've escaped, but I can never feel more proud of you...
Goodbye, son. I hope you don't have to see me again.
Live a good life... without me in it.
    Ending 2:
Heh... you killed your own father...
    ...It's okay. I deserved that.
I wanted to keep you safe... yet I gave you the worst life possible because of my addiction.
You never deserved any of it. And Smelly? I'm sorry for your loss.
You can live your own life now. You're free.
Free from my oppression, free from anything bad.
Goodbye son. May you live a long and healthy life.
    Be happy for me, okay?
    I'm sorry... son.
I just wanted to care for you... keep you safe from those horrible bullies.
But I got consumed by my own addiction... and I tortured you. Beat you in the most terrible ways any child can experience.
Then... I killed you. Something which I never should have done.
I'll be honest. You were a good kid. You were never a monster, so you deserve a happy ending.
I'm the monster here... physically and mentally. I deserve a terrible ending.
    Goodbye, son. Rest in peace.
May you sing with the angels high above.

EDIT:Ok, I should have waited until the end...

Honestly. I don't think the father killed himself in the third ending because he cared. I think it was because he was a coward, who didn't want to face the consequences of abusing and later murdering his own child (If that doesn't get you life without parole or death, you're certainly going to end up forever kept at a measurable length from anyone.)

    Ending 1:
I honestly like better because the fact that the Bat Boy kind of wanted to be close to the cats just like smelly. He wasn't trying to hurt anyone and he wasn't trying to be a problem as all he wanted was to show his love but just like many things in this world people hate things that they don't understand.
    Ending 2:
I really didn't care for the sending because the fact that it was just straight-up Revenge because it said he went after three boys and his father indicating he killed the bullies and went after the father as well.
    Ending 3:
The third ending was just stupid as the father did not pay for his crimes he just killed himself just so that he didn't have to deal with the guilt of killing his own child.
When it came to the mother though I kind of came to the conclusion that it might have been the child but it would have probably been by accident like if the child sneezed and accidentally spit acid when sneezing which caused her to die through her face melting along with her eyes.

Yeah but by doing that he caused a rift between his child which caused one of the three endings to happen unwanted attention from the FBI or straight up the unwanted attention from a bat child. And last but most certainly not least a killer bat creature on the loose whatever his form of protection was it probably would’ve been better if he was just doing the whole treating him like a normal kid that never goes out of his room type of scenario
