This is one of the best oil change videos yet for this application. You followed the official directions to the letter. Good job.
Some viewers may be interested in the torque specs if they have a torque wrench and want to assure that they don't over tighten anything.
Oil pan drain plug torque: 40 N•m/30 ft lbs
Oil filter cap torque: 25 (±5) N•m/18 (±3.5) ft lbs
Oil filter drain plug torque: 13 N•m/10 ft lbs
yes very nice. I'm a bit more OCD than yourself when performing the oil/filter change. I remove the filter housing as a complete unit when draining it. Once drained and the filter removed from the housing, I clean the housing complete inside and out with gas, carb cleaner, paint thinner or whatever I have handy that will thoroughly remove all of the used oil, I also clean the inside where the canister housing fits, but only with paper towels or a rag. I also like that you pre-fill the canister with the new filter inside, IMO this is an important step that many don't take the time to do.
Congratulations. This is one of the better oil change videos on a six cylinder Toyota with the cartridge filter system that I've seen to date and I've seen a lot of them.
I would have included the torque specs is all for those with a torque wrench &/or for those not really sure how tight is tight enough.

I don't know what the 22 thumbs down are all about...? I judge these videos on whether or not I would let the person doing the video change my oil. In your case that's a "YES".

I have the same car. I added a fumoto oil drain valve and just remove the whole filter housing in one piece and just replace the one large oring not the small one. It simplifies the process.
Personally, I prefer to complicate it. I'm retired and it gives me something to do twice a year. I'm not interested in shortcuts. 😉

Well done video! Unfortunately my 2014 4 cyl. Venza is using oil. I’ve switched to 5w30 and it uses far less. The same engine is used all over the world and in some of the Toyota Hilux. In the Hilux, the book calls for 5w30 oil. I suspect that 0-20 has something to do with slightly better fuel economy or meeting EPA standards.
Norm, I have had a Toyota Service manager tell me that exact same thing! I have had 2 Toyotas go past 300k miles and he said if I wanted my 2016 Camry to go 300k, he said use heavier weight oil to protect the engine and I would get 1 or 2 miles per gallon lower economy, but engine will go 300K plus. Or use 0-20 and add a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer with every oil change. It's all about MPG for EPA!!
Very well done video. I always wondered why Toyota came up with 6.4 quarts, but when you suggested as an option to put .4 quarts into the new filter, it all fell into place. I normally just fill with 6 quarts without adding to the dry filter and wait to see when the dipstick shows low... it never does. Curious.
Yea, I learned that when you fill the oil canister with oil, that’s where the .4 is. But also, I believe it’s less strain on the engine when it’s pumping the oil through. But that’s just me :)

This is a great video, thanks for posting it. I just want to make sure I know if this was the 4-cylinder or the V-6 engine? I believe the 2GR-FE engine is the V-6.

I have 2009 Venza V6 2GR-FE and bought 7 quarts of oil. The last 1 quart bottle I only used 400ml to make the total 6.4quarts of oil like it says in owner manual. However I am unable read the dip stick. It covered in oil everywhere on it. Each time I pull it out and clean it then put back in I can't see the level it's at. What can I do? I don't have problem reading my other cars dipstick.

@@JohnathansWorld Yes, it just seems like the oil is kinda in spots it shouldn't be far up the dipstick. I had it at the Toyota dealer for something else and also asked them to look at it. They pulled out the dipstick in front of me and said it was good. It also is super clear the oil so its hard to even see any oil on it. After driving it some more I should be able to see it better as the oil darkens. Thank you for the reply and the great video it helped me do the oil change!
@@Hilariokinyo Mine too - it's weird how the oil is all over the dip stick! way above full and kinda smeared all over. I've had my 2010 venza 6 cylinder for over 10 years so i just look for any leaks and eyeball where i think the real oil level is. never had a dipstick like this one :)

Just a reminder, the oil filter cup only needs 16 ft lbs of torque... Which is barely anything

On my 2015 Venza there's a lock on the filter housing. It won't come off unless you take that out. I broke my housing, not knowing that it was there
They must have changed the design after the 2013 model I have.
That so called lock will not interfere with removing the filter cap. Likely is was simply put on too tight during previous oil changes.
No lock on the ones I've seen.
Yeah they put one on, for unknown reason. It seems to say to keep the filter from undoing itself but seems to be rather for obstruction trap to amateur mechanics.
Mine is a 2013 model too with 76000 miles on it. I feel that my car's engine kind of sounds loud, and I can clearly hear my engine while sitting inside the car. I was thinking of switching from 0w20 to 5w30 oil at my next oil change.. will this make my engine run quieter? Mine's a v6 too.

@@JohnathansWorld it doesn't sound quiet at all. Like I have a camry with 4 cylinder that's very quiet at idle, whereas with my venza, I can feel the vibrations and it doesn't feel as quiet as the camry. I thought V6's were supposed to idle better than the l4s. I can hear a knocking sound, like a diesel, or piston slap. Is there anything I can do?
Try switching to redline 5w30, it will make a noticeable difference as far as trying to reduce all the knocking noice.
Did the o rings come with the filter??

Hi there, thanks for watching my video. My venza was a 2013 with the plastic housing, never had an issue with the plastic one.
If I happened to have to replace the cap, I would look into the metal one. Other than that the plastic one is fine, if it is not broken why fix it.

Hey Jonathan. I tried checking the oil level several times on the dipstick. I can't get an accurate reading. I used one full 5 qt jug and then part of a second jug. There is just over 3.5 qts left in that jug meaning I used 1.4 - 1.5 qts beyond the first jug.for a total of 6.4 - 6.5 qts. Should I be worried about over-filling or is the potential overage too insignificant to worry about? Thanks
Hi there!! Thanks for watching my video!! You don’t wanna over fill the oil, it can cause damage internally to the engine, so what I suggest is, wait about 5-10 minutes, leave the car off, then measure the oil again, the reason I suggest leaving it alone for 5-10 minutes is to allow the oil to settle, then try the dip stick again, but try to put the dipstick in and out as quickly as you can, that way the stick will give a better reading but make sure it goes all the way in and pull it out fast.
Did you run the engine at all after you finished filling with the new oil?
The manual I have says for the 2GR-FE engine, it is 6.4 qts, but sometimes the pan even when you remove the plug can have some oil laying in the pan, so some times it can be just a bit less then 6.4, but try my method for checking the level and see if it works for you
@@JohnathansWorld did exactly as you said. Ran the engine for 5 then let it sit for 5-10. Pushed and pulled the dipstick quickly but completely. Did it many times and still get a inaccurate smear of oil
That’s strange, do me a favor, take a photo of the dipstick after you pull it out, take a photo of both sides, I wanna see it,

It’s possible there could be too much oil in the pan, if the oil is covering the whole bottom of the stick and not giving you a accurate reading then you may need to take some oil out.
Did you use the wrong oil? I thought venza's used 5w-20, you used 0w-20
Yea, I noticed that after I made the video, and I forgot to add pop up notes in the video what the manual says because Technically the manual says to use 5W-30 for the V6 Model and 5W-20 or 0W-20 for the V4 Model, I cant edit the video now.
but I had no issues with the 0W-20.
I sold the car at 100K miles and it still ran like a new car.
It’s just my personal preference that I used 0W-20.
I live in the Los Angeles area and I got great fuel economy and no engine issues whatsoever ever the entire time I owned the Venza.
Also, I stay on top of maintenance for my cars, changing the spark plugs, changing the transmission fluid and filter earlier then what’s recommended by the manual.
I’ve also only put Chevron gas in my cars from day 1 of ownership and I don’t have engine knock AT ALL.
So it really comes down to conditions you live in and how you maintain your Car.

The only way to get the proper reading is make sure the stick is clean then stick it back in the engine as quick as you can in and then out.
And look at both the front and back of the stick.

When you pull the stick out, is the whole stick covered in oil?
Take out the dip-stick and leave it out for 5 minutes. Then try again.
Where did you dispose the drained oil?
Hi there, I dispose it at Autozone or O’reilys auto shop. Usually auto part stores take it to dispose of it.

Disconnect it? Did u try to reset it first? You don’t wanna disconnect the light unless you are having issues with it
2009-2015 TOYOTA VENZA OIL LIGHT RESET:
To turning off the Maintenance Light on 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 Toyota Venza, conform to the following instructions:
* Turn the ignition switch to the “On” position, but do not start the engine
** If your car has START push-button , press the “Start” without touching the brake pedal.
* Press the odometer button until you see “TRIP A” on the little screen and hold it button
* Next, turn the ignition “off”
* Press and hold the Trip Odometer button, and turn the ignition switch to the “On” position
** If your car has START push-button , press the “Start” twice without touching the brake pedal.
* Continue to hold down the Trip Odometer Reset button until “000000” MILES appears on the display and the maintenance light turns off.
This procedure should applies to the first generation of the Toyota Venza (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 models).

I’ve had my tools for years and used them on a lot of stuff, but estimating maybe around $20-$30 for the tools.
More than that oh master. If you are showing the jack, the stands...
One could keep it to minimum with the filter cap tool and whatever wrench to undo the oil drain. Most likely you do not have to lift the car.
Can this be done without the tools? (Except for the drain plug)
How do you mean?
Not wise to do this without a heavy duty oil filter cap wrench and the best ones have teeth on the bottom of them, just in case you discover that the previous person to do it over-torqued it to the point that it seems impossible to get off.
The filter is impossible to put on too tight. Hand tighten it until it bottoms out. It is hard to loosen up, slowly it will go. Easiest when it is cold.
Have you noticed any benefits from the advanced fuel economy Mobil 1?
Yea for sure, I’ve been using the advanced fuel economy in both my Toyota’s since I bought the cars, and my fuel economy has been top notch and also, my cars run perfectly and I have 150,000 miles on my corolla and it still runs perfectly.
I recommend using Mobil 1 synthetic oil over any other brand.

I do all of the maintenance work on my 2013 Civic Si and was suprised to see the differences between some of the maintenance. I plan to do the same on the Venza and it’s always great to see high quality videos like this!

Johnathan's World yes. It looks kinda nerve racking haha. I plan to buy a scangauge to complete it. Unless it’s reasonable at the dealer to have it done. Did you have a dealer do it? If so, care to share the estimated cost?
No I haven’t changed it yet, I’m gonna change it at the 100,000 mark. I think it’s worth having the dealer do it unless you can get ahold of the kit to do it. But the problem with having dealers do it is how do you know it’s really being done?
If you know a mechanic that has the kit to change the fluid on a Venza, and see if u can watch them change it, that’s what I recommend

Venza 2GR-VE V6 calls for 5W30 not OW20. I use Mobil 1 5W30.
You are incorrect, see page 484 and 485, official Toyota Venza Manual for 2013 models. 0W-20 is the preferred Oil per the Toyota Manual.
