Nicedaymovie. How did you get epoxy into the holes where the ropes go in order to seal them and protect the wood from rot? Many thanks for the TH-cam clips. I am saving to buy some Wharram tiki 46 build plans and materials for my own build.
Generally you drill oversized holes and pour in epoxy. Then you cover with glass, then you drill specified holes. Messing around with pipecleaners, or whatever to just coat the holes is not usually sufficient. The problem with wood epoxy is that if the wood gets wet, it can be hard for it to dry out, so you have to take all penetration details really seriously.
What a slow and complicated process. I could not do this kind of work. Ropes to hold the rudder???? There must be lots of friction and the water will make the rope soft and the rudder falls of. ?????
nicedaymovie I would only use rope to jury rig a rudder. Never for permanent use. Just think about the antifouling. Barnacles and goosenecks will love to knaw into that lovely rope. Perhaps out of the water it will last 10 years but only if it is under shade....
+Gabriel Soul sorry Mate but you are totally wrong. it will last and you Paint it with Antifouling All no Problem. I did it and I have seen it and I have used it. before I sold the boat, it was 7 years constantly in the water and never had a Problem. the new owner is still using the same rope... this are now 10 years old...
nicedaymovie Thats amazing. Dont get me wrong, I have no experiance like you have. From what I heard is that warm seawater like in the tropics is much more agressive with wood borers etc. compared to cold seawater.
As far as I know, many Wharram boats have this type of "hinges" for the rudders, and they've been on the water for a long time. Never heard about any problem with the rudders rigging. One of the beauties of the Wharram designs is that the boats have almost none metal parts (even for masts, standing rigging, cleats, hatches... even the cross beams are "just tied" to the hulls), what makes it cheaper to build and gives the possibility of fixing virtually anything almost anywhere in the world.
