- In this video we take a closer look at the Ascend H12 Kayak and the Red Head Blind attachment for Duck Hunting. This duck season we have made the switch from the traditional layout boat to the Bass Pro Kayak. We will be discussing the blind, ease of paddling, and showing off the many features that come with this boat.

Just bought this kayak, you should do more videos on it detailing transporting with a vehicle as well as a kayak loadout video and what else is installed and/or carried in the kayak on an average hunt, love the vids! Keep up that good work

On a college budget I got a pelican Ultimate 100 this summer just to get my feet wet in the kayak-world. I am looking at possibly buying and modifying an Academy Sports kayak blind to make it fit mine. Seeing your videos always inspires me to think outside the box!
Get you a monarch layout seat to put in the yak. Works great
I love the HTR layout lounge insert. I tried to search the monarch layout seat and couldnt find it.

I've been considering buying this blind for my pirogue but I have not been able to find out how wide the widest part of the steel frame that goes inside the kayak is. I was hoping you could let me know. Thanks
What made you go with the H12 vs the 12T?
12T looks better for fishing than hunting. Sits up higher with less cargo carrying space.
Looks real good guys. only concern I'd have for where we hunt is wind and waves can get pretty rough sometimes. I went with beavertails final attack layout boat blind. way sturdier than a kayak, but doesn't paddle as well so good with the bad. keep it up guys
I totally agree Stephen. This is not the boat you want for big water. We need our boats to be light because we portage them.
What length paddle do you prefer for the H12?
Not sure, just picked one up from Walmart
Check out rancho safari they make ghilie cover for those boats and other blinds. They are awesome.
I have the Pelican Catch 100 Classic. Purchased a Redhead blind. Plan to retrofit the blind to the Catch 100. Seeing Carl stand in the Ascend has me contemplating a trade though! I think I would prefer the sit on top as opposed to the H12. Have you used both? Why did you choose the hybrid?

I give Carl props. He's too old to be running and gunning and hunting hard like that. Grinding out a few birds a hunt. You guys need to pony up and get him on a duck club that's real successful with heated pits and gourmet breakfast plus limits of mallards ! He should enjoy his last years of hunting in comfort ! He deserves it. Hopefully that lease will be easier for you guys
I'm sure the lease will help. And don't let the last two years fool you. We have killed many birds and shot many limits over the years. We have always worked hard. But we have rarely been so unsuccessful.

I was just staying saying he needs to spend the rest of his waterfowl hunting years picking out big fat drakes and relaxing, not running and gunning like duck crazy 20 year olds lol. Nice boats what if you had a zipper put around the area the dog sits in I think that would work great take it to a sail shop just a idea then you could use the hole blind
What's the average distance you are usually paddling in
Mason Morris upto 1.5 mile paddle. Hard to figure average. We often haul them in on big boat, drag the kayaks up a bank and then pull them 100 + yards. Other times we might haul them on. Carts. We often jest use them to haul our gear and then use them for the dogs when we are in the water. Lots of variety

@freelanceduckhunting have you guys tried putting a blind on ur boat and hunt out of your boat?
+Brady Strandberg03 years ago we did. We came to the conclusion that ducks are much easier to get in close when using layout blinds. It's not easy to hide a huge box boat blind.
Brady Strandberg03 when I bought my first flatbottom boat I spent some money to have a blind built and camo fabric sewn for it, but despite what people say there are lots of situation where the birds will avoid u in a boat blind. They are good for pass shooting but that's not the way I want to do it.

Its specifically designed to fit the Ascend Kayaks. It's made by redhead.

Yeah, I knew he wouldn't too. But it sure would have been funny if he did! We did shoot out of it several weeks ago.
Has anyone successfully made their own layout blind for this kayak? Bass Pro no longer carries this blind. I’m getting this kayak this weekend but can’t find the Redhead blind anywhere.
wow! bummer to hear about the blind not being available. It was made by redhead. Maybe try contacting them? If not, yet we know how to make a blind if you need help. We made doors for Dan's layout boat.
I contacted my closest Bass Pro a while back, they had one in stock but it was a floor model and was the same one that had been on the floor I had been looking at for the past year with kids playing in it every time I was there. I didn’t want to pay full price for a floor model that had been abused. It’s unavailable for online order from Bass Pro, looks like you have to find it at a store. I will probably need some help setting up this for laying out if I can’t find the blind.
If you need some help just let me know. Fumbles is the master of designing all our homemade blind systems. I'm sure he'd be glad to walk you through it.

Scott Brown it comes out easily. We could use it. It does not allow you to lay down as low as we would like. If u use it just to paddle in the u have to remove it to layout
@@FreelanceDuckHunting could you use your Ascend seat instead of the layout cushion provided with the blind, for a more upright position? I have a Pelican Catch 120 and bought the YakGear blind. Not loving the blind because it has extra large, floppy doors that drag in the water. This RedHead blind is very appealing, but if I'm doing a 1/2 day river float to jump ducks, I'm concerned that the layback position would wear on me. If I could somehow use my stock seat and be more upright and well-supported, we may have a winner.
the nucanoe frontier 12 is stable
need something to stabilize it better. fall in deep freezing cold water with or without waders not good. lose gun and other equipment also. i like the concept
Yes, it's not a good idea to use this boat in water over your head in cold weather.
Do you have to take the chair out to fit the blind on? Or can you put the blind on while keeping the chair in? And by the way I have been a subscriber for a year I'm just going back and watching old videos
Hi Steven, Thank you for being a long time viewer! You do have to take the H12 chair out when you put in the redhead blind.
