That must be why cars in Anime are drawn 3 different ways, a fixed perspective between looking down and the front with a repeating background, going from one side of the screen to the other and in the distance going over and then down a hill. Ways that only involve drawing a single frame and faking movement.

What I absolutely admire about this movie, is that when the big finale is over, it just ends. I've seen movies where they keep on for soo long after that, trying to resolve everything. Redline does it in a minute. Literally. Between the finish of the final race and "The End" is almost exactly one minute. I really respect that.

    • @slicedtopieces

Someone up the chain didn't do a very good job getting word out about the movie in my own expereince, it was something I instead stumbled across on TH-cam a full that stayed on my favourites till something took it down... but now that its under my skin, I can't seem to find it anywhere (as a paying customer). Not streamed and not on obscure store shelves in DVD or Bluray form ... like I didn't even know some of the characters in REDLINE had appeared in other shows till I stumbled across this video in my recommendations! Most animated pictures are doomed to fail since it's a huge investment with unlikely reimbursement, not impossible to claw your way out of , but passion projects are better suited to those who are willing to keep it small and dedicated, when corps get involved it tends to mire them , give credit to madhouse they let them be albeit pushing them towards the end to hurry up , and as stated in the JP Times article there's been some investor interest in a sequel but from outside japan

as someone whose worked on short traditionally i think the creator behind Puparia is working real hard but not very smart and this could become a problem later on. scanning everyframe instead of using a photopress is madness i know because ive done it, he's willing to use digital for some stuff but not other that could really help his process such as masks or digital block colouring figures then overlaying traditional techniques. even if he uses a tablet i understand he might be more comfortable with that one but he might work faster with a screen tablet for cutting out stuff or clean up depending, its really about how far youre willing to move into tech that can beenfit and streamline the process with minimal change to the actual product like is he willing to use blender or AE to do parallax shots or is he actually gonna be painting on some glass and moving it himself

I just saw redline a couple days or so, and cheap or not. It was just beautiful and incredible! And the beginning race, dear God at the beginning race! Never in my life have I seen that amount of speed in an anime. I mean when JP popped a can of nitro in the tank and took off I felt winded! That is one of the greatest senses of speed you can ever have.

  • @TheSeventhDeadlyMatador

Redline was a film that got me through a very dark time in my life and opened up a massive creative drive in me that was drowned from years of depression and hopelessness during my transition from middle to high school. For me the biggest interest of the entire film was JP's Trans AM (Both versions) being a car guy I think my friend knew I would love it when he recommended it to and started my love for anime. This film inspired me for many years to make lego models based on the redline vehicles but the one that stuck out to me the most was the Trans AM 20000. It kept me busy and distracted from all the things that made my life a living hell and shaped me as the person I am now. A model kit was promised many years ago but was never produced due to some kind of budget error and very few were made and given away at a convention and some of them being contest prizes. I still have a massive archive of photos featuring these lego creations, I think it's time I finally did a video on it given the positive impact left on me at a young age.

Excellent video! I unapologetically love both the live action Speed Racer movie and Redline, and every time I have recommended Redline to someone I always tell them to use a good pair of headphones not only for the music, but also because of the sound design all around, because the engine for every car on screen also has a personality defined by how it sounds and the team did an impressive job of making them all sound amazing.
I didn't know all this had happened to make it come to life, so it was a very interesting video to watch. The production quality was great too, and thank you for providing the names of the music tracks you used throughout the video.
Also, if you want to play something like Outrun, I can recommend Slipstream and Hotshot Racing, and to a lesser degree (not because they're bad, they're just not too much like Outrun but still very enjoyable) Redout, Art of rally, and Drift Stage.
I hope at least one can sate that hunger for more Outrun.

As one of the exceedingly tiny handful of folks who saw REDLINE in Japanese theaters on its single-day roadshow, I've gotta say even I learned a fair bit about Koike's career from this one - that said, that one-day roadshow and the associated merchandising fallout (related to them going over schedule and the distributor pulling their contract) was even palpable at the time. Placing so much of REDLINE on Koike's shoulders is, for better or worse, the Japanese animation industry's ultimate moment meeting the double-edged sword of auteur theory. I do remember hearing a bit more emphasis on Ishii's relationship to the movie at the time of its release but I feel like his name in relationship to the film has been ah, eroded with time. Also, funny note about the "cosplaying rejects from a porno" line - in the subs from the Japanese region blu-ray, that is indeed the line they use, making the US region sub track actually *better* by some minor miracle

Coming from Germany, there is a Movie festival spanning over several Cities over Germany called the Fantasy Film Fest. They also showed Redline when it came out. Sadly Germany isn't the best place for Comics or Animation and so it was on around 1 or 2 PM on a Sunday. For sure I went and was one of only a few other viewers. I loved every minute and was wishing more were sitting there to see this madness unfolding in such slick car n race animation. For sure I had to buy the BluRay right away.

Redline has so many cool details you miss the first time.
Machinehead is Sonoshee’s dad. This can be seen in her reactions at the restaurant, her statement about her dad building his own cars, Machine Head being one of the few to react to her car being destroyed and his recognition of her at the final stretch.
Roboworlds military is mostly used for hunting down rogue AI weapons. Those AI weapons infest planets after an ancient war that led to them being outlawed, as well as bio weapons.
JP and Sonoshee aren’t human. Miki and Todoroki are the only humans in the film. This is why JP survives crashes which should kill a human.
Volton's monster is called Wire Girl.
The entire Redline was a plot by Supergrass to destroy Roboworld’s government. Tiedman is probably their inside mole. Roboworld is left with over 90% of their armour destroyed, most of their pilots and military leadership killed, Funky Boy and Wire Girl locked in mortal combat, as well as the destruction of their tower, dam and supercarrier.
Trava and Shinkai’s Speedmaster is a mech that was turned into a car. That mech featured in Trava and the Fist Planet.
JP and Sonoshee might have died, it’s up for interpretation but it would fit the ending with them floating in ghostly blue light.
In addition to Trava and the Fist Planet, there’s a pilot which you should definitely watch. In some ways it captures the characters better than the movie does.

I've only discovered your channel today, and started with the Satoshi Kon video. Redline is one of my favorite movies, and I was indeed enjoying this video, but I needed to stop because you chose a very specific song that is NOT from Redline but always catches my attention.
I know this is a ridiculous thing to stop a video and write a comment over, but to me, Dr. Stewart's GX theme demands such action. I listen to this track routinely, so hearing it in this video is like a Pavlovian dogwhistle for me. For a million reasons, F-Zero and Redline are considered to be hand-in-hand titles, so I completely understand why you went with it and want you to know how much I appreciated the creative choice to use this song.
Really enjoy these videos of yours, and hope to continue enjoying them for a long time to come.
