Redline is literally perfectly put together eye candy. It knows what it is and is not afraid to show people. I watched it today without expecting anything and I was smiling throughout the entire movie. The sheer absurdity of the show just works and it's amazing!
Wow, I really regretted watching this movie on a crappy illegal streaming site right after watching this video. I want to buy the Blu Ray now! Which says a lot since i haven't wanted to actually buy any type of anime movie or show in about 5 years. Thanks for the recommendation Eyepatch!
I feel you man. When I get the money, I'll make sure to get all the top quality anime like Redline, Space Dandy, One Punch Man, MHA and stuff on disc, so my kids can watch it one day.
Redline was actually the very first anime movie that I saw, my friend put it on and paused after the intro and said "Shall I keep it going?" and I just said "Hell yeah!". The unique animation style with it's feeling of speed made me want to discover more anime. So yeah, now 10 years later I have watched so much anime of all sorts. There was a whole new world for me to discover after watching Redline.
Redline was truly a treat back in 2009. It really felt like a throwback to a time when you had no idea what you were getting into when you started watching an anime movie. Bombastic, high-energy, whatthefuckery, and every single frame of animation a glory to behold.
That's why I respect Madhouse ❤️ No matter what are the odds They're always determined on making something different Just look at their library It has to be the most diverse library among all anime studios And unfortunately that is why I think it won't be long before the studio goes broke due to the epidemic of shit taste in Japan 😔
Yeah, I'v seen that one. It's definetly a masterpiece. Absolutely gorgeous. Quite often i am simply infuriated at the blindness of the japanise audience who fail such gems and hype some generic run-of-the-mill 50th teenage idols anime.
I love all your videos, but the editing in this one was on point!! I had goosebumps in the starting of the video where you said 'For every handshakers, there is.. a Redline.' Your content is just getting better and better.
Spoiler I really loved how at the end of the Redline race all the racers just sat there, being happy that they were part of such a race. I don't know too much about the racing community but from what I picked up, I can tell that friendliness - especially at the end of a race - is a huge part of that culture. Having the redline racers embrace this mentality after such a savage race really hit that "those are real racers"-feel in a perfect way.
One of the greatest racers who ever lived, Ayrton Senna (1960-1994), would definitely agree with that sentiment. He was a ruthless racer, if he wanted the key position in a harsh part of the track, he would take it & either other racers would have to be willing to crash into him, or get out of the way. Yet he also risked his life at times to save other racers. Real-Life people like Senna are the genesis of characters like J.P.
Every re-watch I'm still floored by the animation and the abrupt ending. It was like the whole studio decided 7 years was enough, this is releasing RIGHT FUCKING NOW!
Redline is one of only like 3 movies, not just anime movies, that I own a physical copy of. Truly a masterpiece, truly one of the greatest tragedies that it didn't do well.
I consider myself an artist, and i find it so sad that people don't take animation as seriously as live action. The amount of effort put into every single shot in this movie is absolutely amazing.
Just saw this review, I'm not a big anime fan at all. My knowledge of anime only really exists because of my love of the cyberpunk genre, so I'm usually only a huge fan of stuff like GitS, Akira, Psychopass, etc. I ended up seeing Redline about a year ago though, and it's easily become one of my favourite, not just anime, but movies of all time. Love the animation, the action, the soundtrack, pretty much everything you mentioned.
I had a glimpse of that movie 14 YEARS ago... I never could figure out what the movie was because I was still a child back then and couldn't put it together by just watching those few scenes. I was at the point where I thought I just imagined that this movie exists. But today... Today was the day i finally got it. The movie that i thought i had lost forever . A movie that i fell deeply in love with, just from a few scenes (now i know it were the minutes right after the mine field where JP and Sonoshee got together in the car). This is the first time I'm sobbing and it's 100% out of joy and relief that my search is finally over and that this movie is real. And it's bringing me so much joy that it is really that great of a movie as i remembered from those few scenes. I think i found peace today ❤
One of the best channels I encountered. I don't even care 90% of the time about the topic SuperEyepatchWolf is talking, it is just so interesting to listen to and watch the well crafted editing job.
Eyepatch is the only person I give money to when it comes to created content. I don't even watch much anime anymore but him covering Bebop (Favorite anime of all time) and him really giving a different perspective to OPM (I didn't like it at first but his "It has heart" reasoning convinced me to rewatch it and enjoy it.) Made me subscribe and wait for his next video anxiously. He then does a video on motherfucking Redline, an anime I have spent YEARS convincing or trying to at least to watch, and I don't doubt my support to SEW.
Redline's Plot in 15 words or less: "Intergalactic Hipsters Holding a Stock Car Race on a Planet of Cyborg Nazis." You really shouldn't need any more reason to watch this film than that tagline.
realizing how little views this has conpared to some of eyepatch wolfs other videos is a shame on itself. This was the video that got me to watch redline, now my fav movie, and got me into the channel. More people should be seeing this great work and the movie it is talking about

I always loved Redline. Anime like that always needs more support these days ;) Also Megalo Box (a new series recently) is damn good just for the record :D
This is why I feel that the live-action Speed Racer released in 2008, is the greatest anime adaptation of all time. The movie goes full sensory overload; you *feel* the speed and power of the cars that they're driving and visually the movie goes completely nuts. The cinematography is ridiculously dynamic and fluid and the visuals are deeply colorful and rich. The complaint is that the film uses too much CGI and that it's kinda campy; I have no idea how else this film should've/would've been filmed. You could say practical effects a la Mad Max: Fury Road, but they are too completely different types of films and Speed Racer really benefits from the push and innovation of using virtual cinematography and CG effects. This movie, and Redline, are incredibly important as they show that something that is unconventional and uses a wildly distinctive and unique artistic sensibility, should be celebrated and revered. Now, this rant might seem a little bit left-field, as Speed Racer was critically panned whereas Redline was well-received. But I believe these films are one and the same. I know you primarily deal with anime and animation Super EyePatch Wolf but this opens up the broader conversation to use of CG in film and how not everything has to be geared towards realism and pragmatism. Sometimes a little bit of unorthodox can make something quite memorable Check out Patrick H Williams video essay on Film Realism and DigiBro's essay on Speed Racer :) Cheers!
Xplozhun85 Speed Racer got a lot of hate, I don't know why. I honestly enjoy it, it was a visual Orgasm and very well done. It delivered a lot, gave you several races, changed locations, gave you the shows antics and kept the humor pace. Wtf do ppl want? Originally? When it's supposed to be based on the actual anime? Ridiculous.
I actually went and saw that movie for my birthday, enjoyed the movie. . . Was just kind of dissapointed because I got nothing but speed racer toys from all my friends haha, well that and my first real bike. But of course I wasnt big enough to ride it lol.
I saw it on IMAX some people where disappointed I was in total shock when my friends told me the same thing I felt like I was the only one enjoying the roller coaster ride and trust me when I say IMAX is the only way to go for this movie.
Somethign that hit me, and that it took dang nearly 5 years of rewatching from the day it released, is that the reason why the individual frames look so good is because unlike other animations, where the background is usually subtly changed from how characters are drawn to make the characters stand out (either by being in a different style like the painterly Disney movies to being desaturated and less detailed like modern TV backgrounds), Redline instead achieves it by using *motion*. Specifically, they don't use style or colors to tell you what your eyes should be focused on, but movement. The main focal point would be moving in unique, exaggerated and eye-catching ways. Things that do move but aren't meant to draw your attention moves far less and in more repeating patterns, while the least significant don't move at all. This is why almost everything in this movie seems alive; because it is.
Takeshi Koike, if you ever read this, you have one more fan. Keep giving us works of art like "Redline", and you will be forever remembered as a king of anime. Long live the king!
If you liked Redline I'd highly recommend you seek out Disney's Motorcity; though you probably have if you're a fan of animation. Watching Redline was a requirement for the Motorcity team as I've heard, and it really shows through their animation.
Saw the first few clips of Redline you showed in the vid, paused the video and then watched the movie on iTunes. Hands down the best movie I've watch in years. Thank you so much for showing me this, much love
YES. I love Redline. I'll never forget the sheer awe I was in the first time I watched that opening scene with the soundtrack and the racing and wow. Liked. Shared. Will purchase a bluray copy. Super Eyepatch Wolf always drops my favorite kind of videos
Space dandy is a beautiful mess. I think it did not get the attention it deserved. Maybe because at the same time Watanabe's other series Terror in Resonance was airing. Which at first looked like it's gonna be provocative, but ended in utter disapointment. And yea, the reverence is real.
End Of Century Space Dandy is my all time favorite anime. It inspired me to better myself and start drawing so that I can hope to create something as hilarious, beautiful, and emotional as it someday. I really hope SEW gets around to reviewing it.
I completely disagree. Space Dandy feels like a horrible amalgamation of multiple successful shows that had no clear direction or ideas of its own, and only borrows from successful predecessors to tell it's haphazard and convoluted stories. The characters are likable enough, the animation is gorgeous, and the voice acting is wonderful, but if you watch enough anime that came before, it is almost straight plagiarism.
Thank you for this, redline deserves to be appreciated more. been my favorite movie for years. im just waiting for someone to sample the roboworld president saying "fire the cannons" for an edm song, itd be a perfect pre-drop.

I told my dad it's one of the best movies ever made and he bought me the Japanese blu-ray collectors edition with special stickers on all the charaters
I find a lot of the time that the general Japanese audience has vastly different, usually worse, taste than western audiences. I absolutely LOVE Redline and everyone I show it to falls in love with it. But for the most part there is a tremendous saturation of the kawaii uguu anime that seems to be making money because there seems to be such a demand for them. A real shame too.
Aecusim Not gonna necessarily say that Japanese audiences THEMSELVES have poor taste (a lot of that may be due to market statistics convincing producers that those kinds of shows are what people want), but...yeah. That famous (though somewhat misquoted) meme of Miyazaki going "anime was a mistake"? It's way more true in Japan than in the west because for the most part only shows with SOME level of artistic merit even leave the country. For every terrible show that makes it to American shores, there's a dozen nigh-identical trainswrecks that never get licensed.
I am currently studing to be a 3D animator and movies like Redline are my primary insperation for what I want to make. It bummed me out that this movie wasn't successful on release. I also realized in 3D we got a bit of a visual revolution happen when Spider-verse came out, and I realize it propably wouldn't have happened if it wasn't a Spider-Man movie. I guess my point here is that my Berserk/Evangelion inspired mecha fantasy is gonna lose to pre existing IPs in the pitch meeting. . . . . . . But seriously please more original ideas. Also my Berserk/Evangelion inspired mecha fantasy is real and working on it has helped me let out some deep emotional pain and anger, and I will get it made.
The thing about this film is, if it appeared during the Shinichiro Watanabe era(late 90s early 2000s), it would have gotten a lot more steam and hardcore viewers. Red Line to Japan feels far too similar to other mech race intergalactic political series of the past, and these haven't really been that big since say, Macross or it's sequel. Japan isn't ready to be challenged psychologically again just yet, which is why the stories with the highschool characters in it will always be more well received than any other genre, and that might not change anytime soon, for better or worse.
Yeah there is a reason there is a preference for softer stories involving younger people. I mean it's possible that anime now is just made for a broader audience and more groups will be attracted to that sort of thing, but a lot of the anime is still catered towards adult/young men as it always has been , so I don't think it can have that used as an excuse, tbh.
Gxyz222 Well, the original Macross came out in the early 80's when the real robot genre was in its infancy and worked alongside a political themes, but those kind of anime were still popular afterward. I can strongly say that while not all of the Mobile Suit franchise is this way, its later installments like Zeta Gundam and its OVA material such as The 8th MS Team are still held as classics. I think what the issue comes down to is that like other themes in anime political aspects became normal for these kind of anime, so without some new spin on these kinds of shows I doubt they're going to come back in full force (excluding shows like later Gundam UC installments such as Unicorn.) I'll admit that a lot of anime don't stand out overall and some are very copy and paste, but what's helping a lot of these series is backing from otaku along with them already being adaptations of manga and light novels.
"Japan isn't ready to be challenged psychologically again just yet" What are you even talking about? Why are you bringing this up? Redline is a fantastic movie but it isn't close to being profound. It's about a wacky race with wacky cars (some of which should not count as cars) going real fast. It's a fun and stylish romp, not something like Lain.
@Gxyz22 :This is some Real insightfulness here.. ANd since I've been into ANime here for over 20yrs now(when it was still considered 'cartoons') I Really have to agree. There really Was a 'changing of tides' when ANime went Global around Y2k. Cheers

Well one way he could get away with it if he covers the Manga since most people only talk about the movie and the Manga has alot of chapter that the movie cut out
Hey, I agree. Truth be told I went through like 5 years of hating on the anime cause of how much of the manga's story was cut out. But being that the series creator was in charge of both projects, I kinda get why he made it as he did, and why he left so much out.

Watching this reminds me of the person who made me go and buy this movie. That was Demolition D+. His video made me go and buy this movie and it was the best thing I did. Just wanted to say thanks for making a video on Redline it needs more people talking about it.
Hoping it will become a cult classic.
We never were worthy of Demolition D+

There's just something about "Redline Day" that always pulls at my heartstrings and makes me feel a great sense of happiness and wonder. Truly an incredible film and a fantastic song just as well.
That's why I respect Madhouse ❤️
No matter what are the odds
They're always determined on making something different
Just look at their library
It has to be the most diverse library among all anime studios
And unfortunately that is why I think it won't be long before the studio goes broke due to the epidemic of shit taste in Japan 😔

Redline is so good and well drawn that when the action kicks in, I grit my teeth as though I'm in the show with the characters. Its amazing.

I really loved how at the end of the Redline race all the racers just sat there, being happy that they were part of such a race.
This would indeed be heartfelt however you forgot to account the fact that other racers were basically trying to kill other racers.
Redline looks like Speedracer, Jojo's bizarre adventure and wacky races got chucked in a blender.

Redline's Plot in 15 words or less:
"Intergalactic Hipsters Holding a Stock Car Race on a Planet of Cyborg Nazis."
You really shouldn't need any more reason to watch this film than that tagline.

Sometimes a little bit of unorthodox can make something quite memorable
Check out Patrick H Williams video essay on Film Realism and DigiBro's essay on Speed Racer :) Cheers!
Rain is such a talent.
Just incredible. Watched it today thanks to seeing a post on Instagram and then checked yt to see this vid

Space dandy is a beautiful mess. I think it did not get the attention it deserved. Maybe because at the same time Watanabe's other series Terror in Resonance was airing. Which at first looked like it's gonna be provocative, but ended in utter disapointment. And yea, the reverence is real.
End Of Century
Space Dandy is my all time favorite anime.

"Japan isn't ready to be challenged psychologically again just yet"
What are you even talking about? Why are you bringing this up? Redline is a fantastic movie but it isn't close to being profound. It's about a wacky race with wacky cars (some of which should not count as cars) going real fast. It's a fun and stylish romp, not something like Lain.
Could you go more into depth as what Thatanimesnob meant?
