for me it was *Sonic* *Frontiers.* but in an inverse way. I had not heard the ost of sonic frontiers. i wanted to play sonic frontiers to have the experience of listening to ost in game. I'm a lifelong fan of the Sonic franchise. and as much as they have ups and downs in their games, the music has always been a constant of extreme quality. so while i couldn't play sonic frontiers and saw youtube videos and memes praising the frontiers soundtrack, i couldn't be otherwise than excited
For me, this track evokes a sense of visceral, primal fear. The shrill screeching of some sort of bow in the background puts you on edge, and the loud start at the very beginning brings to mind the sudden slam of a door behind you. It’s dark, wherever it is you are, and there is a sharp feeling of dread in the repeating strings, that only becomes louder and louder the longer you listen. You are not alone. There’s something here. Something scuttling about on many limbs, just outside your field of vision. Hunting you.
Yes, exactly. This isn't a song, this is the sound of a predator in pursuit. This is the sonic equivalent to the sensation of dread and terror prey feels before being violently snuffed out. It's disjointed and unnatural, just like the movements of Nosk. It's a poor facsimile of something, designed to concern and intrigue, then take you out.
Nosk is the theme song for a boss fight that is located in the scariest spot on the entire hollow knight map, Deepnest. a place full of horrifying creatures, darkness and traps. the point of all this is that nosk is not our direct enemy. he attracts us through curiosity. It amazes me how the music perfectly translates the scary and predatory nature of this character. for a next one i think you should react to Lace, is a song from the upcoming sequel of Hollow Knight, Silksong. and if you like hornet, you gonna be amazed by Lace, a full song made only by string instruments.
Nosk certainly seems to be some type of spider, as evidenced by the webs all over his lair, plus being in Deepnest, though his actual form is malleable. Perhaps he is the ultimate form of a mimic spider, since he can take the appearance of his prey's loved ones, he probably can also do limited mind reading.
You're going to LOVE Sealed Vessel and many others (e.g. Greenpath, Enter Hallownest, etc.) and as my favourite game music of all time I would love to see an entire reaction to the whole OST
Is it scary in-game? Yes. This track is the only reason the boss fight is difficult (plus its build-up but still). You should definitely react to Sealed Vessel for a more emotional experience. Love that track to pieces.
I dont think that the reason of the fight being difficult is due to the theme. I know have a bunch of friends and watched a lot streamers/youtubers who played the game, all of them think that the OST is phenomenal, but the most of them (cuz they arent musicians) cant pay atention to the music while they are fighting. Even when some people on the chat pointed this theme being tense and scary, some people just say "i was to busy and concentrate, i didnt hear it"
@@Luky.73 You don't need to pay attention to it for it to be effective. It's a heart-racing piece and the intensity of it makes a pathetically easy boss fight difficult simply because of how erratic the music is makes the two-three moves it has seem more unpredictable despite it not being anything like it at all.
Thanks for reacting to more music by Christopher Larkin! I just wanna say though it is a CRIME that you reacted to the first opening to Overlord in one of your videos but didn't react to the other three overlord openings. They are definitely worth a video!
trying not to spoil, nosk is a beast that has hunted many of the player charecter's brethren. It is made to be extremely unsettling and dangerous, which is also reflected in it's move set as it uses the entire room's space and jumps into the ceiling essentially cornering you and being very efficient in capturing you and killing you. Also as other comments have mentioned it is a huge spider like creature found in the area known as deepnest which is also just a very dangerous and unsettling place.
The weirdness and scary part represents so well that moment of the game. Because of that the inmersive way all is contructed is very shoking at the moment. Perfect
I played Hollow Knight A LOT and always jammed with the soundtracks but with every reaction of yours (and intense focus of mine) I am able to experience something new regarding one of my favourite games. Thank you very much for that and of course I hope that there'll be more tracks from HK covered. I'm unsure how well it would fit into your repertoire but I'm curious about how music of boss fights is connected to the background music of the environment the boss is located in. Nosk is a Boss in an area called deepnest. It can be accessed fairly early in the game, the only hurdle beeing a bossfight infront of the entrance. There are a lot of visual and storytelling cues that hint to the dangers of the coming areal. Most new players wouldn't dare to enter deepnest that early, as it is supposed to be a late game zone. You have less vision, no map, nearly no safe spot and save point. Of course there are stronger enemies, but the audio effects of the area are scarry as hell. If you don't intend on playing the game I recommended watching some short gameplay in that area and also reactions to first encounters of nosk :D Another reason the boss is so special is that it is completely optional and I'd bet not 50% of the player base of HK encountered it. That's because the boss is located near the first entrance to deepnest but is a bit hidden and only accessible if you have double jump (monarch wings) or long dash (crystal dash). Most players wouldn't care to check there again after getting those upgrades since there are 4 possible entrances to deepnest (1 of them beeing falling from above and getting trapped in deepnest).
Love seeing these reactions to the Hollow knight OST, so far I've noticed you've only looked at boss themes. In terms of others i think are worth looking at I would highly recommend "The grimm troupe" and "Sealed vessel". I'd also recommend checking out some of the area themes, they tend to have a lot less going on koverall but create a strong sense of ambience that it might be interesting to see a break down of, of those I'd be particularly interested in seeing "city of tears".
the glass mallet sound you described is Col Legno, a string instrument technique where the wood of the bow is bounced on top of the string (as opposed to dragging the hair across it)
You mentioned that glass hammer sound you couldn't figure out? It sounds like plucking violin strings but just the little bit between the bridge and where the strings attach. Its a common technique in the zither family of instruments
I think the best part about this song is the build up to the actual boss that this song plays for. Like the bosses "den" is really quiet and, without being too spoilery, uh, the boss can shapeshift. The boss can look like you. At that point in the game, at least on my first playthrough, you have never seen something that looks like you before so you're intrigued. You follow yourself through the bosses den, dead husks scattered about. And then you reach it's final lair where and I'm gonna stop because it was a really good build up for me and an even better pay off. Play the game if you haven't, the game is good and the music is exquisite.
It almost sounds like they loosened the hairs of the bows, causing the wood to slap the strings. In Mars (the Planets) there’s a bowing style called col legno, which means “with the wood”
The simplest explanation i can come up with is as follows; the game takes place in a world of anthropomorphic bugs. The nosk is a boss found in a hidden area in a place called the deepnest. The deepnest is a giant den of spiders.
Hollow knight is one of These games with such a great atmosphere. You should go to all osts. Also recommend Ori and the blind forest. Keep up the great work(:
It's made me respect a style of compound that was not talked about much when I was growing up, that's for sure. My all time favorite game ost is Neverwinter Nights by Bioware.
I wonder if the percussion at the beginning is actually the backside of the bow being hit on the strings. its a technique i used in orchestra a lot with pieces that were similar to this, very useful in creating tension in a piece!
would love to see you react to grimm (the grimm troupe+nightmare king) and sealed vessel (+ pure vessel) and radiance! most bosses in hollow knight have a harder version which often comes with a variation of their boss theme. for example mantis lords which you reacted to also have a harder version and another boss theme titled sisters of battle that is more intense bc the 3 mantis lords are fighting you all at once while in the 1st fight each of them comes down to fight you one after one. definitely worth checking out
Please react to "The Troupe Grimm" and "Nightmare King" too, and (if possible) in the same video, cause both are for the same character and have the same leitmotiv
Spoilers Basically in this theme, you are fighting a massive spider called Nosk that can morph into different creatures, this is the boss theme for it. Very unnerving boss fight as well as the atmosphere being a massive spider web nest
If you want to listening to one of the most "friendly(?)" I would recommend my favourite "Fungal Wastes" I just walked that part a lot to listen to the scene haha but I believe most would vote for " Greenpath" or maybe even "City of Tears" instead haha
Hey you should react to The Summoning- Sleep Token. They’ve been one of my favorite artist for many years and this song has gotten a lot of traction recently and I’ve seen quite a few reaction videos on it. They have a very unique style unlike any I’ve seen on your channel yet!
You should check out the Cuphead ost if you haven’t already. It’s one of my favorite video game soundtracks and songs like Bootlegger Boogie and Floral Fury are just absolute bangers.
I don't know if your looking to react to more anime osts but I'd like to request fairytail, alot of the pieces loop alot but there are a few that I'd think make decent videos
Please react to White Noise by Official Huge Dandism!!! It's sooooo good! All of the official huge Dandism is good and you reacted to one of their songs for spy family.
⏩ Video Question: Has a game OST ever been the reason you started playing the game??
For live content catch me on Twitch. www.twitch.tv/drumrolltony
Yes for me it is assassin's creed
yes. for me it's arknights
Risk of Rain 1.
Celeste and Bloodborne for me. Amazing soundtracks

Same with boss mechanics like he charges and jumps on you, pretty fitting for the nature of this track
that laugh in time with the music at 4:42 was really creepy lmao
LMAO Iit was totally in time 👀😈😅
That eerie sound you were getting was bowing behind the bridge of the string instruments where the strings are much tighter
This sounds like something you'd hear if a huge tarantula is chasing after you lol, It's brilliant.
Literally what happens, too.
Nosk certainly seems to be some type of spider, as evidenced by the webs all over his lair, plus being in Deepnest, though his actual form is malleable. Perhaps he is the ultimate form of a mimic spider, since he can take the appearance of his prey's loved ones, he probably can also do limited mind reading.
the sheer terror this theme invokes is crazy and unnerving, the into to the boss fight combined with this theme just jacks the creep factor up to 11
You're going to LOVE Sealed Vessel and many others (e.g. Greenpath, Enter Hallownest, etc.) and as my favourite game music of all time I would love to see an entire reaction to the whole OST
would love if you reacted to Sealed Vessel, easily my favourite song from Hollow Knight
Definitely listen to the entire OST it is absolutely wonderful and awesome.
Is it scary in-game? Yes. This track is the only reason the boss fight is difficult (plus its build-up but still).
You should definitely react to Sealed Vessel for a more emotional experience. Love that track to pieces.
My friend who isn't familiar with Hollow Knight described it as "his grandfather being buried"
I dont think that the reason of the fight being difficult is due to the theme. そう、ホロウナイトで俺1番好きなんよこの曲。なんか全部いいんだけど何故か単調なこれに惹かれる
This is the track of an ambush hunter.
You know he is there... SOMEWHERE.
And it climbs up, up and up, until it pounces you.
That was really nice! For sure, some times I listen to some VGM and think "man... what is this?? I should check this out!"

Oh man if you enjoy this one you'd love the Nightmare King Grim theme from Hollow Knight
Another intense track from Hollow knight that doesn't get enough attention is Broken Vessel, it would be awesome if you reacted to it.
That sound is someone quickly playing below the bridge of violin or similar instrument. Probably cello.
Adding another comment to the pile saying PLEASE do more of this soundtrack!

To me the clicky sounds sound like when you hit strings with the back of your bow, which I think is called 'col legno'
