    Fun fact about the lyrics in this and most other songs from the Nier games, they're written in Chaos language which was made up by the composer/singer in order to specifically not distract the player while they're going through the game!

    • @theLikou1
      @theLikou1 ปีที่แล้ว +125

      It's also how the singer imagined how human language would be 10.000 years in the future, everything is mashed up to a single language with some sounds looking from different languages.

    • @asimian8500
      @asimian8500 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      @@theLikou1 Too bad there wasn't an option for the characters to speak Chaos language with subs. It would have given an otherworldly and ethereal feeling like the OST with Chaos language lyrics.

      It's basically gibberish that Yoko kanno used in her compositions too (for Cowboy beepop, gundam, ghost in the shell, terror in ressonance, wolf's rain, etc)
      (Moon by Yoko Kanno for thoes who want some kind of example)

    • @DennGreenIII
      @DennGreenIII ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Even cooler still is the fact that the language was created with the idea that in the very distant future, the world may have a single universal language, and so this was created by taking the sounds of many bits and pieces of different accents around the world. Sometimes it sounds almost English, sometimes almost Japanese, sometimes almost French, etc, because those accents are poking through. Really cool stuff.

    • @kieran1129
      @kieran1129 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@alpha-tomahawk532 Although Yoko Kanno does a similar thing with her music as does others such as Kajiura Yuki or Keiichiro Toyama in the game Gravity Rush, it is not Chaos Language.
      Chaos Language was created by Emi Evans, the main singer for the NieR games and Drakengard 3. The language shift and does not sound the same in every tracks because she doesn't use the same base language. The best example is a track from the first NieR called "Ashes of Dreams" which has 4 versions, one in contemporary English and three others in different "dialects" of Chaos Language based on French (Nouveau), Japanese (Aratanaru) and Gaelic (Nuadhaich).

    Releasing Nier OST was quite a task for the people that created it. Because there's very rarely it's just one set track that plays, instead the music is dynamic adapting to what's happening on your screen/in the story. So most tracks have 2-5 versions that transition seamlessly while you play. I think that's pretty cool.

    The best part about NieR Automata songs is almost every one has like 4 versions, being ambient for when you're running around, soft for when you're in the pause menu, a more involved action version, and a second ambient with vocals added for certain areas. And that's just if I'm remembering right. The song will change on the fly based on what you're actually doing in game which was the most interesting part of the whole soundtrack. I like the breakdown!

    You said you think lyrics often get in the way of the song, so you'll love music from the NieR series because the vocals in their songs is a made up language, in fact here's a quote from the games' director Yoko Taro “The reason we went for this mysterious made-up language is because we felt that as game music, having lyrics which you can recognize and understand might distract you from the gameplay.”
    Now I'm going to go listen to, my suggestion for you listen to, Kaine's theme from NieR and cry.

      Right? One thing i realized about watching all these video game OST reactions (not just in nier), is how much the context of a video game adds to the music and vice versa. Like how the music in nier automata changes depending on what you're doing, all the souls games boss themes, etc.

  • @maxkalton5936

    There were indeed three versions.
    You can think of them as, "amusement park / haunted amusement park / amusement park parade." Each would be playing on a loop under different circumstances. A lot of Nier: Automata's soundtrack works like this, presenting different versions as variations in a single piece.
    If you're looking to try others ... well, the whole playlist is excellent. "Possessed by Disease" is a fan favorite, along with "A Beautiful Song," though "Alien Manifestation" and "Birth of a Wish" are the ones I'd actively seek out during a playthrough. "Birth of a Wish" in particular is the in-game herald of a very-human desire manifesting in some utterly bizarre way.

    I like how you mention that the Amusement Park song is a little creepy because SPOILERS, up until that point in the game you have encountered almost exclusively hostile machines. Yet now, in the middle of an abandoned amusement park, we have countless, friendly machines acting as if they were visiting the park, or working there, etc and generally acting like humans. It’s unnerving watching all these robots masquerade as anything other than what we’ve seen and been told about them.

    The music in this game really is exceptional, very glad you covered this! A fun followup to consider would be A Beautiful Song, which is the track associated with the boss fight of this area. It's a really gorgeous track with how it has such fun contrasting instrumental portions. The vocals are also really fun, especially the switch halfway through which leads into one of my favourite vocal performance segments in a game (especially cool since, as a few people have mentioned, the vocal language in this game is made up!).
    Whichever track you go for, Nier Automata is definitely a treasure trove of great tracks to cover haha

    To add on the nier OST fun facts : most background themes used in the various area have at least 2 versions, a "calm" version and a "combat" version that organically swap between if your in and out of combat.
    That is why the second part is much more dynamic and "aggressive" than the second part as I believe this particular source Tony picked has both versions mixed together!

    • @AegisKHAOS
      @AegisKHAOS ปีที่แล้ว

      In fact, it's usually three, a quiet, a mid, and a combat version. Amusement Park has three, but the quiet part used in the soundtrack is not the same as in the game. And then there's the fact the game will also use vocal and instrumental versions of the music, something that the soundtrack will also mix into most of the tracks.

    One of the best games ever made and the OST is the BIGGEST component of its success in my opinion. The story is amazing and perfectly executed, the characters have depth, but the music is what makes the game achieve the most insane levels of emotion and immersion. Hands down the best tracks I've ever seen in a videogame.

  • @Acatia2
    @Acatia2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The repetition is semi intentional, most tracks are tied to a prominent location in the game's post apocalyptic setting (in this case, the remains of an amusement park). Themes will fluctuate from a baseline format to quieter arrangements for somber emotional moments, or increased tempo for combat instances without ever cutting between each other. Listening to all those arrangements back to back would likely be repetitive, although tbh even that might be intentional give the nature of the game.

    I love this song so much, but so much of this game's music is so evocative and powerful. The Amusement Park song has one cool trick you can't hear outside of the game, there's like three versions of this song that play in different spots. Like there is a version that kind of plays before you get to the park and then the one in the park, and the final one happens when you're in the last section. This game does a lot of this kind of thing.
    (Annd I just realized that it sounds like they bled the versions together)

    what i LOVE with NieR music is that 98% of the time, it's sung in "chaos" language. And to me with audio processing issues, I LOVE this, because the vocals in this exact case are an INSTRUMENT, rather than the actual focus of the song. Because I agree with you, sometimes the lyrics get in the way of the song. I hope you do more! There are tons of beautiful/intense NieR songs.

    Just found this channel randomly while watching through warframe content, happy to see even years after release there are still people discovering things like the Nier:Automata soundtrack and getting so much enjoyment from it. Personally would love to see you play the game though as simply hearing the songs from nier on youtube don't entirely do them justice. I know for a lot of players of the game, myself included, the first time going to the amusement park, seeing all the fanfare, and hearing this song, it's all just breathtaking.

  • @vetreas366
    @vetreas366 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Automata's soundtrack is amazing, but there are tracks that really hit different if experienced in-game vs just listened out of the game. This one is enhanced by the visuals and the contrast between what you'd be expecting to happen and what is actually happening. You're expecting: figthing robots. What is happening: Disney World. It's weird. It also toggles between 3 versions: this full one when in the main area of the Amusement Park, a slightly muted instrumental version that plays when going in the backstreets and an 8-bit version when hacking enemies.
    Others like "A Beautiful Song" actually have part of the song being played by the boss themselves with the song being made to match certain parts of the boss fight (or I guess the fight is made to match the song, if we're to be realistic) like chimes that play during certain attacks or the intro being a voice... "line" kinda sorta, which the separate OST doesn't include.
    Weight of the World's 3 language versions are the same as in the game, so context notwithstanding it's relatively the same experience (JP version has the signer seemingly break intro crying near the end, like the rest of us), but since the game's director is fond of making us fight music at the end of his action games, the fourth version is a mashup of the other 3 plus added choir (sung by the game's staff) that switch dynamically depending on how far into the "fight" you are. It's a great song but it really smashes you in the feels when you've been playing for 20-30 hours and now you're fighting the game's end credits to save the game's protagonists because a drone of the "armed with machine guns" variety just developed sentience and decided to make a stand against its programming. Fun stuff but the tears make it really hard to target and murder the scrolling (and attacking) names of the staff who are currently singing in a choir that just dynamically came on to encourage me to see it through to the end. Game's weird. 10/10

    It's cool to see you digging into Nier music. Funny enough Amusement Park is one of the few songs not actually composed by the credited composer Keiichi Okabe.

    This music was pretty magical for me, this was after time and time again you're fighting a bunch of hostile robots in a post apocolyptic world, and you're expecting more fighting when you're entering this place, but instead you're greeted by a bunch of robots performing like you're being pulled into an alice in wonderland carnival, truly magical, made me take it slow and explore the place, one of the best experience I had having my expectations twisted for the better.

    años despues de que disney quebrara y cerrara sus puertas para siempre los exploradores urbanos exploramos sus ruinas y contemplamos lo que una ves fue un gran imperio mirabamos con nostalgia tristesa lo que una ves estubo lleno de vida y felicidad ahora solo hay ruina y abandono por todas partes y mientras me pregunto. mientras suena la musica de fondo como es que todo acabo asi?

    I have been listening to this song for a while now and I didn't know that language in the song wasn't even real lol I'm also someone that prefers melody over lyrics so I didn't care to much of that.
    Also I wished you could react to some Persona 3 OST I think it's great
