Have seen this company transform over the years and it's a fine one to travel on. Once booked Manchester to Glasgow in 1st for £18 a few years ago and realised if i had something to eat and drink every time it was offered and worked out how much it would cost normally to buy off the trolley in standard i ended up consuming half the fare back so ended up effectively eating and drinking half the fare back
How great to ride on a new train when everything is in perfect condition! The wi-fi not connecting was the only issue, but that seems to happen every now and again no matter where you are. I loved the way the countryside opened up after Lancaster with beautiful early spring scenery. Nice touch to end with the daffodils in the foreground. Looking forward to the next scenic part of the journey.
I had an Inspector Sands announcement on that moving walkway once. There was a fire under the bridge to platforms 13 & 14. I scarpered pretty quick to Manchester Victoria and on to Liverpool.
Had one in Westminster Tube station the last time I visited London. I nearly crapped myself, didn't know which way to go. Out and find it's kicking off outside The Houses of Parliament again or down and find out the Tube was the target.
I’m glad that it was as good on the inside as the outside. The livery was stunning. Up in Scotland we are finding first class seems to be a bit hit and miss for getting advanced but they are there. You just need to be a bit of a slave to the machine of advanced alerts and being willing to run between websites when the LNER one buggers up.
Or just increase the national speed limit on the motorways. I'm sure that safety wouldn't be altered significantly if the speed limit on motorways was increased to 130kph/80mph. Though it would be impossible to safely drive at 177kph/110mph.

Have to say since the TPE refurb, I am very impressed with what they done to the class 350 and class 185. I went on both pre covid lockdown, and want to go on the Nova’s post covid lockdown. Standard class seems to be extremely good on TPE services and set the bar very with: great leg room, nice bright interiors, seats seem more premium in terms of look. Not been in 1st class as it is a lot even before and no doubt after lockdown for what you get. Before lockdown and advance 1st class was about £65.00 between Manchester and York fixed term and you did not get much in terms of free stuff, so I’d rather go for standard on TPE and then just pay for a coffee or tea or whatever if wanted. However for standard class superb. In terms of 1st class LNER have set the bar high on all 3 trains HST (now retired), 91 (in storage), and Azumas all seem to be of outstanding quality in 1st class.
I'm hopping to visit Carlisle in the summer, taking the train from Edinburgh. I now feel looking forward to trying out my first train ride on-board a class 397 now that I saw this video today.
This is such an upgrade from the trains they used to run up to Edinburgh and Glasgow that it's almost laughable. When I lived in Bolton for uni, I'd generally be catching the train to and from Glasgow as it passed through Bolton, and my gosh, the fact that they used to run Pacers the full distance from Liverpool through to Glasgow shocks me but they did it. So sure these new CAF trains might have a bit of a rattle but compared to those old shitboxes that were the Class 144s, it's barely even noticeable. These look so nice and are nicely fast enough that they don't impact trains on the WCML as much as the older 144s and 158s used to do when they had the full run up to Scotland, excellent choice from TransPennine Express to get these, they have the option to get more as well which I hope they will.
Wow Dylan that was quite the train for sure , we definitely don't have many of the trains you ride here in the states but that one was terrific. Thanks for sharing and stay safe.😷
A nice, lovely, enjoyable ride. Thanks for sharing ☺️ Even I was leaving in London for 1,5 year I've never travelled in Northern England. Can't wait for your next video 🙂
Another great video: Manchester station is impressive ; the train looks amazing and seems to be spotlessly clean; the scenery is beautiful and Carlisle looks worth a visit. It was unexpected to see a freight train at Manchester - freight and passenger trains sharing the tracks seems to be more the North American model.
The freight trains through Platforms 13 and 14 serve the container terminal at Trafford Park and come from the Heald Green direction (Manchester Airport route). They can be as much as hourly in each direction and actually are held up often by the slower moving and stopping passenger services through that part of Manchester. Yes it is a VERY congested section through Piccadilly & Oxford Road stations but it could be helped by passenger services being formed of at least 4 vehicles to assist in passenger flow.
Never seen the station spotlessly clean, I usually see beggers and piles of trash in there which is sad, also the staff may charge you to go to the toilet as I was a victim of this.
Great trip, with gorgeous scenery through the Lune Gap - the best bit of the WCML in my opinion. Don Coffey says that Manchester Oxford Road station was rebuilt in wood to keep it light (I think it's on a viaduct).
I did the full Edinburgh/Manchester service very recently, and both the train there and back were cancelled. We were instructed to board an Avanti West Coast train to London Euston and change at Preston, but during the ride to Preston the man on the loudspeaker said those who were going to Manchester had to get off the train at Carlisle and wait for the next train (which was a Tanspennine coming from Glasgow), because TP hadn't even contacted Avanti asking permission for their passengers to take an Avanti service. On the return, the service back to Edinburgh was cancelled as well and we took a Northern service to Preston and then took an Avanti back. I'm sure TP had sorted out the issues with Avanti this time around because at least we had a pleasant trip back. Basically, if anyone is on Transpennine's Edinburgh/Manchester service, be prepared for cancellations! Thank you for the trip report Dylan!
Yes I agree Dylan that is a Beautiful looking train. and once again you did a great job of reviewing the trip nice editing and explanations of all. well done easy to follow. Always enjoy your video's and look forward to each one. Thank you for taking the time to do them and to share them.
Great shot of the entire train at the end - livery is super, Thanks. These trains are spotless you can tell even on TH-cam ! I like the colour co-ordination and the lighting, it makes everything look clean. That price is very good, would have been interesting to sample the food on board maybe next time.
Used to travel through Picadilly alot when I lived in Manchester. Alot has changed over the last 20 years. Now I miss Manchester because of this video.
As usual Dylan, a through report about train and station. Yes, the livery was beautiful on this TPE train. Keep going with your excellent vlogs. Too bad catering is not available on his route.
During 3 years of travelling - 2017 till 2020 - between Darlington and Manchester twice a week it was my experience that the WiFi rarely worked even on the new trains
Great video. Brought back many fine memories of jet lagged stays in the Kimpton Clocktower with my airline. Watching the parade of Castlefield corridor trains from the comfort of a posh room (that I wasn’t paying for!) was tops. Keep up the fine work.
Great video! I think when everyone gets back to full catering it will be a boon to business! That said, glad to see every once in a while, cities that have FA clubs, very interesting to see their stadiums. Very poignant scene with the stop at Lockerbie shown. Many sad memories.

I think the main problems that TPX had faced up until a couple of years ago were mostly linked to just not having enough trains, and so the stock was run ragged and there was no slack in the system. Now that they've got the Nova trains and have still got most/all of the 185s, that gives them a lot more flexibility. If they are short of available trains, for example, they could downgrade one of the services that should use 2×185 to a single unit and release the second unit to be used elsewhere - not ideal as those trains will then be crowded, but a lot better than cancelling a train!
I have travelled on one of these novas just 11 days before the first uk wide lockdown coming back from visiting my dad just outside Manchester all the way up to Edinburgh from Manchester airport very much like you described it when it’s the right time I may well be on one of there trains again as they’re excellent!

Nice one Dylan. I was on one of these a couple of weeks back from Manchester Piccadilly to Oxenholme and loved it. Got another one planned this week from Carlisle to Glasgow. A point about cleanliness, I saw a guy come through the train wiping down all the touchpoints. I haven’t seen that with any other toc over the last 12 months! Oh and they look good externally too 👍
@@DylansTravelReports Not only was the HST power supply inadequate for powered external doors, it was barely adequate to push even the internal doors, so if the door's track got a bit sticky - it stuck! Buttons are fine; even a child can manage them.
I have seen several of your videos on rail journeys and have enjoyed them. I have generated several videos myself and know what it's like to go through and sort them out. Good job!
I rode the TPE on the way from Glasgow to Piccadilly and then back the same way last weekend. I rode the nova 2 and omg what a train. The ride was so comfortable and I was clocking speeds of up to 100mph.
Great video! A tip for folks with a 16-25 Railcard - you can get 1/2 off TPE advances (vice the usual 1/3) if you book through their website and select 'offers' - thus making a trip like this even cheaper!
I am very much in favour of button operated doors, having travelled in quiet coaches where men (it’s always men) have gone into the lobby to shout down their phones and keep pacing backwards and forwards past the doors so that they keep opening and we can all hear how important they and their calls are.
this is a nice train .I travelled 200K last saturday and couldnt wait to get off my train. such a bumpy ride everyone complained never mind youve had a great trip Victorian railways Bah!! cheers buddy
I like the use of light wood trim on the walls and tables. Plenty of bike and luggage space, and first class. The seats look a bit thin but other than that, these look decent. I can't wait to have a bash on one myself.
3:55 I see a Freightliner class 70 heading to Trafford Park F.L.T. Great video Dylan, I like the TPE 397s and 185s. Both liveries on them looks fantastic 👌
Well, 110 mph is good enough I guess given the fact that you can travel at 125 mph for some time in the UK. Here in our little Czechia, we will be happy for that in 2022 or 2023 depending on when the railway to České Budějovice will be finished - the line will be partially 200 km/h but only for tilting trains, for classic trains only 180-185 km/h... BTW, design wise these trainsets look fantastic and also thanks for making longer reports, I really like this format. 😎
Again Dylan you give me great memories of Manchester Piccadilly station. In 2019, when I was in Manchester, I bought donuts and an ice coffee from the Krispy Cream shop before catching my train to Leeds. The economy class itself didn't first interest me until you quoted the prices. At first, First class did appear better than economy. However, economy class for its cheap price was far better than first class in this case. Researching everyrhing is key. I can't wait to travel back to Manchester. When will you travel through Wales? I'm hoping to see the Welsh country side. Nice video.
Had a run on one of these recently and was very impressed. Just shows that they can build trains with good interiors where seats line up with windows. They knock the 195/331 into a cocked hat. Shame TfW didn't order a diesel version of these instead.
The Edinburgh - Manchester Piccadilly is a familiar route to me as I use it to travel down for Manchester City games and to visit friends in Ashton Under Lyme. I use the tram from Piccadilly to the Etihad Stadium and Ashton Under Lyme. I haven’t traveled on the Nova class yet as it was class 170 Turbostars that TPE were using last time I managed to go down. I’m looking forward to using a Nova class in June when I’m going to visit my friends in Ashton Under Lyme.
TPE never used the few 170's that they had on the Anglo-Scottish services. Before the Nova 2's, they used Desiro based 350/4 electrics or 185 diesels. When they had the 170's, they were used on Manchester to Hull via Leeds or Manchester to Cleethorpes via Sheffield, where their lightre weight meant that they could run at hogher speeds than the 185's on sections of those routes.
My last 2 trips to Newcastle from Leeds on TransPennine were 10 mins & 30 mins late respectively. Even booked an earlier train the last trip & it was 30m mins late.
Good shot of the Manchester Metrolink in the beginning. THIS IS AN AWESOME VIDEO AND TRAIN. I am one of your subscribers. This is my favorite Nova train. Interesting that the train isn't crowded. That's a very popular route, and it's an Airport Train.
I went on one of these trains about a week ago actually, its a very nice train but unfortunately with driver shortages and the train being really busy, plus other issues that day I was only able to travel one stop from Lancaster to Preston. Still if I get the chance to use this train again I will be very happy.
@@unclestuka8543 That's not really true. The UK lacks high speed trains but Britain is less than half the size of similarly populated European countries and trains are often more frequent. Also, outside of a pandemic, subsidies are a fraction of those seen in other countries. Taxpayers on the continent pay eye-watering sums per passenger journey.
@@peterd788 Ever been on SNCF. Smooooth permanent way. Fast trains. Double deckers. Rubber tires on metro ! No dodgy bogie welding...France builds all its own Trainsets.
Nice video, but even better if you had mentioned Tebay Gap and Shap, the specific parts of the trip where it is essential to be looking out of the window at the amazing scenery. Especially on a day with the decent weather you had (though in the Pennines the weather is of course a lottery).
At the beginning you seemed to be walking a well trodden path of mine from a collection of bars by the Rochdale Canal!! I think TPE have done an excellent job with their livery and interior of all their fleet of trains, including the Novas and 185’s. Comfortable, easy on the eye and always immaculately clean and maintained. I have yet to travel on the Nova 2’s but hopefully in a few weeks I have trip booked from Edinburgh to Preston.
I think pushbutton doors are an improvement on automatic doors. Automatic doors always seem to keep opening and closing randomly when people stand near them. It's very annoying.
If we ever get back to traveling again we could use this train from Manchester Airport to Preston, and then the service from there to Blackpool South to visit some friends that live along the sea side, whom we have not seen since they moved back to the UK from NYC a few years ago.
Thanks - great review; I'd like to take that trip sometime (hopefully fairly soon!). The only put-off is Manchester Piccadilly - too big and complex: I'd rather go from Oxford Road or Deansgate. Man-Picc is an excellent demonstration of why HS2 should have taken up Tony Berkeley's 'Euston Cross' idea (twin island-platform through station) rather than the big and un-beautiful design they actually chose.
Your senior hill country reminds me of the eastern part of the state I live in in the US. It is green in the spring, but by summer it is pretty much dead looking grass. It us still pretty though, just different.

I have seen several of your videos on rail journeys and have enjoyed them. I have generated several videos myself and know what it's like to go through and sort them out. Good job!
Thanks!
I rode the TPE on the way from Glasgow to Piccadilly and then back the same way last weekend. I rode the nova 2 and omg what a train. The ride was so comfortable and I was clocking speeds of up to 100mph.
the nova 1 802 is easily my favourite train
I might have to take this beauty next time I travel to my mothers up in Cumbria. Thanks for the video.
Great video! A tip for folks with a 16-25 Railcard - you can get 1/2 off TPE advances (vice the usual 1/3) if you book through their website and select 'offers' - thus making a trip like this even cheaper!
Wow, never knew that! Thanks for the info!
I'm amazed at how thin the seat backs are - that they are still comfortable shows how fast technology is moving!
I remember the day when electricity first arrived at Manchester Piccadilly!
I am very much in favour of button operated doors, having travelled in quiet coaches where men (it’s always men) have gone into the lobby to shout down their phones and keep pacing backwards and forwards past the doors so that they keep opening and we can all hear how important they and their calls are.
The 397 has been retrofitted with infrared sensors on the saloon side of the doors because the button was positioned in a non DDA compliant location
this is a nice train .I travelled 200K last saturday and couldnt wait to get off my train. such a bumpy ride everyone complained never mind youve had a great trip Victorian railways Bah!! cheers buddy
Lovely! Remind a lot of London Victoria station . First time I seem a travlator in a station
ive been on a nova 2 on that same service and they are a huge improvement over the 350s
I like the use of light wood trim on the walls and tables. Plenty of bike and luggage space, and first class. The seats look a bit thin but other than that, these look decent. I can't wait to have a bash on one myself.
I did Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport last year and was very impressed.
3:55 I see a Freightliner class 70 heading to Trafford Park F.L.T. Great video Dylan, I like the TPE 397s and 185s. Both liveries on them looks fantastic 👌
Thanks, Dylan ! Nice video, as always.
As always, thanks for an excellent informative video.
Very Smooth, Clean, Orderly and Silent-at this high Speed!
Introduce selling of Snacks-provided passengers also cooperate to maintain Cleanliness!
Nice video.
Wales is coming soon 😁
@@DylansTravelReports Thank you. 😀
Great report, Dylan - I cant believe the price!
Thanks! Ik, bargain!
Nice! I recently went on Transpennine Hitachi Train From Newton LW to LS
Had a run on one of these recently and was very impressed. Just shows that they can build trains with good interiors where seats line up with windows. They knock the 195/331 into a cocked hat. Shame TfW didn't order a diesel version of these instead.
another excellent video, Dylan! - glad you came to Carlisle - it's where I sat watching your report and from where I'm typing this now!
Thanks! Lovely town 😁
Well-presented video. You're very lucky to be able to get out and about during a Lock-down!
Thanks, although there was no lockdown when this was filmed.
Manchester looks like a nice place to visit 👍
Remember hearing "inspector sands" alot when I worked in Edinburgh Waverley
The Edinburgh - Manchester Piccadilly is a familiar route to me as I use it to travel down for Manchester City games and to visit friends in Ashton Under Lyme. I use the tram from Piccadilly to the Etihad Stadium and Ashton Under Lyme. I haven’t traveled on the Nova class yet as it was class 170 Turbostars that TPE were using last time I managed to go down. I’m looking forward to using a Nova class in June when I’m going to visit my friends in Ashton Under Lyme.
It's spelt Ashton Under LyNe. Confusing, because there's Newcastle Under LyMe next to Stoke on Trent.
I used to go to center parcs whinfell forest now I go to Sherwood
Thanks!
@@DylansTravelReports your very welcome Dylan! ;)
hey dylan mate its your spotting mate louis thank you so much for reviewing my 397 choice that i suggested reply on direct messages thanks bud
My last 2 trips to Newcastle from Leeds on TransPennine were 10 mins & 30 mins late respectively. Even booked an earlier train the last trip & it was 30m mins late.
Lovely countryside for your trip!
I work near there, very familiar scenery in central Manchester.
Nice Experience With Train 🙏💐
LNER and Transpennine Express are my two favourite train companies
Good journey nice and clean looks comfortable 🥂
The Class 350s used to do this route. They now do 110mph on the WCML, at least from Birmingham southwards...
Good shot of the Manchester Metrolink in the beginning. THIS IS AN AWESOME VIDEO AND TRAIN. I am one of your subscribers. This is my favorite Nova train. Interesting that the train isn't crowded. That's a very popular route, and it's an Airport Train.
Not crowded? Reason: coronavirus, or have you forgotten?
@@peterdean8009 I haven’t forgotten, but things are starting to get back to normal so I figured people would be traveling
Thanks!
@@transitcaptain Trains will remain distanced until at least July. And this isn't holiday season even if it was a normal year.
I went on one of these trains about a week ago actually, its a very nice train but unfortunately with driver shortages and the train being really busy, plus other issues that day I was only able to travel one stop from Lancaster to Preston. Still if I get the chance to use this train again I will be very happy.
I think TransPennine is really exceptional service compared to other British train services.
I think the same.
Beautiful trains and stations, the British are far ahead of us in the United States.
But bloody miles behind Europe
Class 397s look very nice. Great Video!
I think pushbutton doors are an improvement on automatic doors. Automatic doors always seem to keep opening and closing randomly when people stand near them. It's very annoying.
Yh, and you keep having to stop 4cm away from them to keep going through the train, and you want to keep noise and draughts out
If we ever get back to traveling again we could use this train from Manchester Airport to Preston, and then the service from there to Blackpool South to visit some friends that live along the sea side, whom we have not seen since they moved back to the UK from NYC a few years ago.
I`ve never heard the term `Senior Hill Country `before
Auto correct strikes again. It should have said senic hill country.
@@melaniegarcia3070 I think autocorrect got confused because it's actually spelled scenic!
@@AML2000 you are right but that didn't pop up on my auto correct when I was trying to spell it and I am terrible at spelling. Hopefully you all got what I was trying to say.
As always, an informative and entertaining video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Love the roast of Bolton wanderers 🤣
Great video. They seem a bit “IET” inside...the vestibule doors and deco, the toilet wash facilities, the standard class seats? 🤔 Nice looking train on the outside...better windows than an IET.
Fav TPE train
Nicely created video full of interest and infomation. I have subscribed.
Thank you 😁
excellent as always...is there a rail line close to Orleton (Herfordshire),that you can take from London ?
