  • Part III/III titled "How Not to Read the Holy Fathers" from Fr. Seraphim Rose's insight on the most common and deceptive pitfalls for Americans when reading the Orthodox Holy Fathers and the attempt to share in their Mind. Fr. Seraphim examines various specific Orthodox publications and teachers under the following three key pitfalls: 1) Dilettantism: dabbling in Patristics and seeing the Fathers on a similar level as non-Orthodox teachers; 2) "Theology With a Cigarette": casually approaching Orthodoxy and the Fathers in a worldly spirit and not sharing their struggle; 3) "Zeal Not According to Knowledge": Immaturity and idealism without the pain of heart needed for true spiritual growth. Avoiding these pitfalls will keep us on the narrow path towards our Christ.

As a recent convert to the orthodox faith, this is the most valuable video I have heard! It is dangerous to read the orthodox church fathers with a protestant mindset! It is better to start one's journey with baby steps. I'm a Mennonite convert from Canada by the way.

This is so helpful! No wonder I had no interest in attending a recent large National church meeting. I think I’ll just stick with going to monasteries for my fun! The joy I feel in those places is other worldly and I’m trying to make our place of business and living more a place for householders to struggle together. I want less entertainment! Thank you. I wish someone qualified would write the chapter on emotional maturity he mentioned…

St.Francis embraced the life of poverty as his Lady...because it leads to humility. What made him unique was he found JOY in it, a holy joy that made him very attractive, bringing back Christ in person. He suffered much, and wanted to Be Christ out of love for Him, Not to compete with Him. Anyway, saints are not infallible.

Brother, I don't believe St Herman has the copyright to Fr Seraphim's Orthodox Survival Course, as Fr Seraphim gave the lectures freely to pilgrims, who recorded them, & it is available to be downloaded, on the internet. I have heard it read by a robot that reads page #s & such in the middle of sentences & is not easy to listen to. Please inquire & if possible please record it for the benefit of many, including those who are visually impaired.

I understand what you are saying. I know St. Herman’s Press is in the process of publishing this Survival Course. An incomplete version exists online in text and Orthodox Reactionary has recorded most of this version so far. Look up “Orthodox Reactionary OSC” and you should find it

Dear brother, I was not successful to send you a message on twitter. Is there any other way of communication?

Unification is the will of God, it is not necessarily the will of God that Orthodoxy reigns over Salvation. It was the will of Jesus Christ to associate with sinners and tax collectors. If Orthodoxy should humble itself and if hit on one cheek then offer the other cheek. As Orthodox Christians it is not our privilege to judge but to forgive. It is not our privilege to ex communicate others who are sinners but choose to repent and do God's will. Swallow you pride because communion and salvation do not belong to man but to God. Satan divides but the fruit of the Holy Spirit unites. If Jesus Christ were to come do you think he would deny his body and blood?

I desire to convert to Orthodoxy- but my only reservation is exactly what you have written about.

These might help you. If not, please let me know more specifically what you are struggling with and I’d be happy to try and help.

Francis must have converted thousands of souls to Christ. Including saints. Judge not, so you may not be judged.

If a child cannot understand Orthodoxy, then it cannot bring him to heaven.

Seraphim Rose might be a great example of repentance, but he should have never picked up a pen.

I hope you understand one day how wrong you are. He was given the gift of discernment from above. Was St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco misguided in blessing him to write, and blessing the publication of The Orthodox Word?
