The idea for the show started a while back while i was having a sever attack of gout. Hence the "grumpy" tag. When we stop learning our brain begins to fossilize.
@@GreenGardenGuy1 The gout's got me now. Overall, the attack wasn't that bad. I was immobile yesterday but a drank a massive amount of water and I think all that constant peeing really helped it from getting more severe. Could use a little awa though...
@@derrickpitter8340 Gout is a bugger. Seems to get worse as I grow older. Perhaps the kidneys just don't work as well or Hawaii is the Island of Pork. Sadly pork messes with me and it is the most abundant meat in HI. I don't know if drinking water is a medical solution or not but it seems perfectly logical. Uric acid should flush through the kidneys and into the urine. I have noted that if i don't drink enough water gout attacks can occur. Generally my issues are minor too but I did have an attack earlier this year that I wouldn't wish on anyone.
Hi Bill! Thank you for the great overview - any advice on where one might source stems in the mainland? I would love to grow my own garden, but unfortunately cannot run to a nursery to get seeds.
I am not familiar with using seed to grow Kava. In Hawaii, it is done with cuttings. There are several companies online that will ship kava plants. Try a google. To grow kava you will either need a greenhouse or live in HI, PR, St Thomas or the southern tip of Florida. It is a tropical and needs year round weather between 65 and 85 degrees. I manage to grow it with nights that drop to 50 but it gets very slow and unproductive at that temperature. I am out of stock on Kava right now but when I have it I can ship to a few states. CA, AZ, TX, & LA all prohibit the green plant. KS prohibit the stuff in all forms.
I almost tried some at Uncle Roberts. I have also watched videos of people harvesting the roots for the drink. As I recall, as it has been awhile since I watched this clip, there was a real method to just what roots they decided to use for the drink. Quite interesting.🌈🤙
I admit to never having harvested or processed the plant myself. I have tried it from just about every Awa bar in Puna & Hilo over the years. I grow the plant for the nursery and leave the roots alone. I leave the processing of the drink to some one else. Good thing we stopped using virgins to chew the roots and spit them into bowls. As virgins became rare grinders replaced them.
What is the botanical name..Those leaves would make wonderful leaf roses...wonderful. how do they.dry ..have u tested the vase life? Where could one get one.
Piper methysticum, I neglected to include the name. Sorry, no, I just compost the leaves. The root of the plant is the main feature. Noticing the leaf was a perfect heart was a bit of comic relief.
I tend to stick with plants that I cultivate. A friend has tried to get me interested in this plant but thus far he has failed. Currently I don't have any growing. Provided the government doesn't continue it's crack down on useful plants I may try growing some in the future.
@@GreenGardenGuy1 yeah I mean selecting good pots and keeping it. For example if I store them wrong they bread ant or mosquitos. Or get sun damage or get stuck together.m etc
@@whatthefunction9140 I see. I don't think I could make anything very informative with this due to my situation. No pots remain here for longer than 2 months. I run a nursery and the pots are always being used, then replaced with new ones. When i replace them I use brand new nested pots purchased by the case. These are stored inside my potting shed until used up. Honestly, that is about all of the story. In California I had a lot of used pots from my landscape business. These would be nested and stored under my walnut tree until used. The situation was the same there, pots in, pots out, pots gone. I was always behind the 8 ball searching more pots. In Hawaii used pots are really hard to find so everything is new.
You can find it on most herbal supplement counters under K for Kava. It has been around for quite a while as an herbal anti-anxiety treatment. It has been around a lot longer in Polynesia as an intoxicant. A small amount is a medicine, large amounts are a classic Hawaiian recreational drug.
Hello my friend: I want you to research its bennifitial effects for CRONIC alcoholics like ME!!IT WORKS my friend; in fact I PLAN to be a MAJOR player in selling KAVA! It quiet simply SAVED MY LIFE!!
Some of the physical effects you are describing are very similar to what I have experienced while drinking kratom in the same manner. I realize the other similarity in the increasing regulations for both, very interesting... I don't think I'd miss either of them if regulations ban their recreational use, but it would be a shame for those who benefit from the physiological and psychological ease from the plants!
From my viewpoint banning plants is fascism not good government. No government on earth should chose to say a part of nature is illegal. Nature trumps government because it will still be here long after no one can remember our nation.
If I had a choice between a beer buzz and a awa buzz, I would chose beer, it tastes a lot better. My question is does alcohol consumption effect the stated anti-anxiety effect of awa?
You sure look happy for a Grumpy old man lol. Love your vids. We are never too old to get advice 👍

Glad to see the successive generations from those Maha Kea stems I dropped off. Aloha
I have been slow at working with them but they are all doing well, thank you for the cuttings.

Hi Can you send me a link to buy some clippings?
I do not currently have propagation. I may start some this summer. Your location matters, where would these be sent?

Where could one get one.
piper methysticum, waqa or yanqona in Fiji.

Great!
Could you do a video on Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa ) next?

GreenGardenGuy1 def worth something if they try to ban it.
@@thedomestead3546 Just another case of plant fascism.
The Philippines is blessed with this plant indeed. I am here to see the awa grow!
Would love to see a video on nursery pot selection and care.
Do you mean selecting the actual empty container? When you say care i assume living thing. I'm not clear.

Hahaha...got the Musical quote. ...the offspring.
You really pay attention. Yes, it was a quick one.
Great video.
Kava makes you feel punchy, when it relaxes? Maybe that's a personality thing and not a Kava thing to feel punchy.
Maybe it is just the words. No one should drive a car for an hour after using Kava. That is what I call "punchy", not trusting my senses.

since awa hit gaba receptors the same way alcohol does, any mainlander who consume alcohol on a regular basis wont feel much from kava consumption.
