    Thanks for trying! You guys are awesome. If you don't have a vet tech near by, your State's Wildlife Dept may have a list of bird rehabers. The State I live in has a very short list of wild bird rehabers on the State's Dept of Environmental Protection website. One or two veterinarian offices are on the list too.

    I came home from school, and wanted to check out the bird feeder for deer tracks, as they were all over our yard. I walk into the backyard, and when I look at the bird feeder, there’s a bird stuck inside it! I ran over to help it, and it seemed really stressed, and it was tired and trying to escape. Luckily, I freed it, but it couldn’t fly. It ran under my porch and hid. I tried to give him some bird seed, but he hid underneath a piece of wood. I took a box, craved a large hole in it, and lined it with towels to keep it warm. It just snowed about a foot, and it’s cold out. I’ll definitely be trying to help it out! Thanks for the video!

    Great video Jill on caring for the woodpecker!
    I just took in a male cardinal who lost all his tailfeathers when attacked by a dog and can't fly.
    How can I care for him and keep him warm?
    He eats and drinks but that's all.
    I have him in my bathtub to keep my dogs away.
    No bird rehab close by. It's cold at night and I worry about him. Thanks for any advice.

    • @askavettech2057
      @askavettech2057  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aww you are a sweet sole taking care of natures little animals! ❤️. Soo keeping him in your bath tube is not ideal, other than away from the dogs! I'd have to do the same prolly, or a cat carrier. But giving him some natural things to stand on, will help keep his feet in shape for when he is released 🤞! Also make sure you are giving him fresh water everyday, and seed with some kinds of fruits in them, like a suite cake with apples or something like that. The high fat will help keep him warm. I would not give him supplemental heat, because we are heading into winter and doing so could slow feather growth! you want them to grow as fast as they can! Remember Chickens often go through a molt this time of year in preparation for egg laying. I would think Cardinals do the same to some extent (I don't know if you have a male or female) But it can take a while for those tail feathers to grow back, if you are planning on keeping the bird until they grow back you should invest in an actual bird cage so it has room to learn to fly again with those new feathers. Hope this helps:) Best of luck to you!!!!

    I retrieved what I believe is a small finch from my cat, I immediately walked across the property to release it onto a tree only to find it's no longer flying and a wing may be broken. I have decided to try and nurse it back to health for my daughter who loves nature (aside from bugs). My two main concerns are that I have to keep it outside in the colder winter weather, however it's Florida so the temperature doesn't drop all that low. Secondly when handling said bird I noticed a faint minor blood spot on my hand, I don't think it's majorly life threatening but this is my first wild animal I'm trying to nurse back to health for release. Anyone have suggestions on what to do?

    • @askavettech2057
      @askavettech2057  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love that you want to try to help this little bird! I hope that it will be ok, a broken wing can take a bit to heal, but as long it doesn't need to use the wing, and can keep it against the body, it should heal. I would get an enclosure built for him/her with some of its natural habit. And figure out what it eats. You can take a picture with your phone and Google search it so that you know what kind of bird it is. Keep the water changed every day.

    why kill it if lethargic? In the wildlife rescue center they administer medication if there's a puncture wound from cat claws/teeth, to treat them, better do that from the beginning rather than do nothin, wait and then have to kill it later, right?

    Is it ok to hold wild birds without gloves? Why do they always say that? Also can't thought dead bird? Even if our own chickens?

    • @askavettech2057
      @askavettech2057  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is ok to hold dead birds bare handed, just wash your hands after carrying them. I am not sure who says that, but it could be because some birds have mites or lice and they could get on you, if the bird has been dead a long time it could have maggots inside it. But none of those are harmful as long as clean your hands.

    Great video thanks. Some we think a dead actually recover at the bird rehab, and they xray so no extra pain. I use brown paper bags to transport teeny tiny birds, and have some folded down cardboard boxes ( do not take up space) in case we find a injured large bird. I do not know if true, but once I read the hard wire on a kennel might damage large bird wings/talons so should pad inside wire with styrofoam. A friend & I rescue songbirds when they migrate thru the city, birds hit the glass skyscrapers or fall to the cement, most do not survive impact. A youtube shows us in Newark NJ th-cam.com/video/kjxoV66pCcM/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/Awp3mupoRyo/w-d-xo.html of us picking up injured Warblers.
