You're not too old. I've been in class with really old guys before. Just find a tech school or community college to go to that offers a 2 year associate for Aircraft Maintenance Technology.
You're getting older, but no you are not too old. I have a pilot instructor who due to medical reasons is now a mechanic, he's at least 55 yrs old and is working with us. Pro's is you will always have a job if you are even half way decent, it might be working at a flight school on small aircraft but you'll have food on the table. Cons is the big money (6 figures) is almost exclusively to the airlines, which means long hours and graveyard shift, or military contracting which is often overseas. You can get your A&P license in under 2 years for a reasonable price at quite a few colleges, and the best part is an A&P license from a low cost, no name college holds the same weight as a A&P license from Embry Riddle. Do not worry about getting a degree with the A&P, no employer gives a f about college degrees, they care about experience and willingness to work - I say again, do not get a degree if you want to become an A&P.

This is by no means accurate but I'd say maybe 36 to 40. I know Delta starts people off at 30/hour no matter what though based on what a maintenance supervisor said when he came to school. By the way, it's A&P.
You have to start from the bottom and pay is based on time with the company. Doesn’t matter what experience you have. If anything that only helps you obtain the job.

Hello. Read the qualifications in the link below. Delta.com currently has Technician openings in LAX, SFO, MSP and ATL delta.avature.net/careers/SearchJobs
The FAA proposes to adopt a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Boeing Model 737-600, 737-700, 737-700C, 737-800, and 737-900 series airplanes. This proposed AD would require an inspection of the vertical fin lugs, skin, and skin edges for discrepancies, an inspection of the flight control cables, fittings, and pulleys in section 48 for signs of corrosion, an inspection of the horizontal stabilizer jackscrew, ball nut, and gimbal pins for signs of corrosion, and corrective actions if necessary. This proposed AD results from reports indicating that moisture was found within the section 48 cavity. We are proposing this AD to ensure that the correct amount of sealant was applied around the vertical fin lugs, skin and the skin edges. Missing sealant could result in icing of the elevator cables, which could cause a system jam and corrosion of structural and flight control parts, resulting in reduced controllability of the airplane.
As for 757's, we propose to adopt a new airworthiness directive (AD) for the products listed above. This proposed AD would require repetitive detailed inspections for discrepancies of the horizontal stabilizer ballscrew assembly; repetitive lubrication of the horizontal stabilizer trim control system; repetitive measurements for discrepancies of the ballscrew to ballnut freeplay; and corrective actions if necessary. This proposed AD was prompted by a report of extensive corrosion of the ballscrew of the drive mechanism of the horizontal stabilizer trim actuator. We are proposing this AD to prevent undetected failure of the primary and secondary load paths for the ballscrew in the horizontal stabilizer, which could lead to loss of control of the horizontal stabilizer and consequent loss of control of the airplane.
In 2011, The proposed AD would require repetitive detailed inspections to check the 757 ballscrew assembly for measurement discrepancies and freeplay, and requires repetitive lubrication of the part. It is intended to “prevent undetected failure of the primary and secondary load paths for the ballscrew in the horizontal stabilizer.” The FAA is estimating cost of compliance of this AD, which would affect 730 aircraft, at $1,105 per aircraft for inspection and about $2,210 for replacement work (excluding the cost of parts). Today, all 757 are being inspected, repaired, and are flying again.

Rocco Pirrotta lets be real, we all know deep down we shouldn’t get paid as much as pilots. One requires much more prerequisites . 100k base pay is not bad at all. Add OT to that you’re in 100-200k range. No complaint here. Just need to put more effort in. FYI I’m not a delta tech but in a major airline and we all know each other’s pay. Since we use each other as leverage for better contract when the time comes.

4 ten hour shifts with Sun Mon Tues nights off. In my country the paid is not the best...the career is so expensive if you see how much you will gain. And the work is pushy demant, stressful and not time to enjoy and the money is not paying your life being.
@Brian I get what you're saying but I have to respectfully disagree. AMT's at Delta make well over $100K base pay. Plus a very generous profit sharing. AMT's start at above $20 hour but it takes 8 1/2 years to top out unless you are a motivated person and get promoted to a Lead AMT or Inspector. Then you top out immediately plus Lead and or Inspection premium. One of my inspectors has been with Delta for 1 year and 2 months. He started at the bottom of the AMT scale and is now an inspector. He will make $125 K this year.
@Brian I work for a regional right now (PSA Airlines which is owned by American) making $24.05 an hour with a 10 year top out at $35 an hour. But working for American Airlines themselves you have a starting pay of $29 an hour and a 5 year topout at $53 an hour. That's damn good money for only being $6000 in debt and a 2 year degree. Underpaid is determined by how much time it took to get you qualified to get the job. There's jobs that require a 4 year degree but pay way less.
this is a very stressful job! If you make a mistake, it could takes up to 20+ years before the part became fatal and you will be responsible for everything
Raw Raw what a bunch of hype up BS this is. Hey am from Ethiopia & have above 8 years experience on Both Aircraft maintenance and Engine so i want to join in to your company.
I am 34 years old.I m a truck driver.I am planning to not drive over the road anymore right after new year.i want to become a tech but I wondering am I old for this job? What is pros and cons? If u guys give me some heads up I would appreciate it.
You're not too old. I've been in class with really old guys before. Just find a tech school or community college to go to that offers a 2 year associate for Aircraft Maintenance Technology.

I just would like to thank you response.
Wassup, I'm in year 2 of 2 in an Aircraft Technician course here in Canada. While you've got almost 2 decades on me I can tell you that you are not too old. Ages for my classmates range from 19-33 years, as for the people I know.

Do you guys have an academy for this?
I wanna be an aircraft maintenance technician so bad.
10 yrs experience in commercial aviation, 3 years of sending on applications no phone call. Fuck it I'll stay where I'm at.
Hello , I’m a current ramp agent at delta airlines and I’m curiously wanting to learn Aircraft maintenance. Is this worth the money a year? And is this a high demand for aircraft maintenance tech? I always wanted to work in tech ops. But just did not know what position to go for and is fulfilling.
Does delta. provide visa too for joining if applicant is from out of usa.?
Work at a Mro, love to get a gig with you guys
Is there any job for me in amt
Is there anyone can help me with FAA maintenance mechanic logbook format? And some information about it...???
How to learn Aircraft Maintenance Engineering?
My dream is to become an air craft mechanic.
Maybe, learn how to spell "aircraft" before becoming a mechanic.

Mitch P do your need your A&P for cabin maintenance?
@@noelkibrom2708Delta has ASM (Aircraft Support Mechanic) which is essentially a Mechanic Helper. ASM's perform much of cabin maintenance.
An A&P isn't required for this position but certainly helps because it's so competitive.
How much would y'all say an Air Force Aircraft Technician (crew chief) with 6+ years experience on a carrier (similar to commercial), an AMP, and multiple certifications related to maintenance, and a degree start off at?
This is by no means accurate but I'd say maybe 36 to 40. I know Delta starts people off at 30/hour no matter what though based on what a maintenance supervisor said when he came to school.
By the way, it's A&P.
You have to start from the bottom and pay is based on time with the company. Doesn’t matter what experience you have. If anything that only helps you obtain the job.

I like airplanes. I dont have interest in research and development but in field job like manufacturing and maintenance. So are aeronautical engineers required in maintenance or only Aircraft mechanics?
Also is there a significant advantage in doing aeronautical engineering before becoming an Aircraft technician?
Got my Airframe license 2 months ago. I have 1 more quarter of powerplant! Once i get my P I’ll be applying to all the major airlines in Seatac, WA. But i have no experience as an AMT besides schooling. How hard is it to find a job?

Does Delta do maintenance on 737-700's and 757's?
Yes
Respected sir or mam, I have completed 10th and vocational courses from govt institute trade ( fitter). Do they fix tails?
They sure do.
Someday I will be a pilot for delta or be a cargo pilot
I want to work with you as assistant
If they are so important why are they not skilled labor? Why do you do everything not to give them the pay they deserve like the pilots?
Rocco Pirrotta lets be real, we all know deep down we shouldn’t get paid as much as pilots. One requires much more prerequisites . 100k base pay is not bad at all. Add OT to that you’re in 100-200k range. No complaint here. Just need to put more effort in.
FYI I’m not a delta tech but in a major airline and we all know each other’s pay. Since we use each other as leverage for better contract when the time comes.

4 ten hour shifts with Sun Mon Tues nights off. Show up and 9 pm, grab a cup of coffee, get work assignment- usually servicing oil, hydraulics, oxygen, tires….lots of looking at stuff….., cruise out to plane, do all inspections, fix what you find depending on if parts are available, sign everything off, go to next plane and repeat. Take an hour lunch, watch some tv, standby to cover morning departures (in case pilots call) clean up and go home
Im a fresh graduate and has a/p rating license from the Philippines. Can you guide me please?

In my country the paid is not the best...the career is so expensive if you see how much you will gain. And the work is pushy demant, stressful and not time to enjoy and the money is not paying your life being.
Underpaying career...
@mechanician how much money do you consider underpaid?
>$108,000 a year
@@mitchp3761 Being in the business for 10 years and not being able to afford an average house in the city I work in
@Brian I get what you're saying but I have to respectfully disagree.

Raw Raw what a bunch of hype up BS this is. I have over 8 + years as an AMT License A&P and I applied for a Maintenance job and I was just giving a BS Form letter stating wow you have great experience but we going to move along in the process with others. Do they tell you that you have to take some BS test before hand basically like a psych test and aptitude test. I went through 2 years of school and I pass all my FAA tests got my A&P and Delta still want to administer a BS Mechanical app test to see if you have what it takes. I proved to the FAA I have the knowledge skills to perform this job.
Except you guys are cowards and don’t hire direct, instead you contract even experienced employees like myself so that the liability is off you guys in case of a mistake. Take responsibility for your hiring and hire directly for experienced candidates.
