Metamorphosis: The Transformation of the Bournemouth Symphony
    • Metamorphosis: The Tr...
This documentary tells the story of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s rise to international acclaim while under the baton of Maestro Constantin Silvestri. Ray Carpenter (1922-2017), the symphony's principal clarinet, shares his memories along with historic materials-photographs, excerpts of musical recordings, newspaper clippings, and programs. Ray provides insight into his own musical coming-of-age as well as musical life during the Silvestri (1961-1969) years. Despite his short tenure with the symphony, Maestro Silvestri managed to transform a provincial band to an orchestra whose performances were praised in and beyond London.

I was working in Bournemouth in 1963 and 1964 as a young man when I discovered classical music and heard Silvestri every Thursday evening. He was incredible, a short man he would generate fantastic playing from the orchestra. I remember a performance of The Pines of Rome which blew the the audience away. I saw him once in a cheap restaurant and regret not asking him for a signature ! It was the highlight of my week. Ticket price 6 shillings.

Well you are in luck then. Here is the concert you heard. The absolute best performance of the Pines ever!

Constantin Silvestri was my dad's good friend. I was named after him (Constanze)He passed away a few days before I was born. It's a very special connection.

@@constantinsilvestrigar My father loved classical music and went to concerts in Bournemouth. He had friends in the orchestra and thats how he met Silvestri. When he died Sivestri's wife gave my dad his fur coat and hat.
