Metamorphosis: The Transformation of the Bournemouth Symphony
th-cam.com/video/LgrLATb75No/w-d-xo.html
This documentary tells the story of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s rise to international acclaim while under the baton of Maestro Constantin Silvestri. Ray Carpenter (1922-2017), the symphony's principal clarinet, shares his memories along with historic materials-photographs, excerpts of musical recordings, newspaper clippings, and programs. Ray provides insight into his own musical coming-of-age as well as musical life during the Silvestri (1961-1969) years. Despite his short tenure with the symphony, Maestro Silvestri managed to transform a provincial band to an orchestra whose performances were praised in and beyond London.

Of course his most famous performance was of Elgar's "In the South". I was listening to a broadcast in my car where they announced that he died and the Symphony played the Elgar “Nimrod” variation in his honor. I was in tears and almost drove off the road. Hi, I'm Glen and have three TH-cam channels, this channel dedicated to Constantin Silvestri, my general channel "Glen's Audio Restoration", and a channel featuring popular music of the 1910's and 1920's "Glen's Centennial Oldies". Links are in the description. When ever possible I try to restore from original sources and say what source I use in the Description. Ciccolini is one of my favorite pianists! Although there are many wonderful pianists out there, many of the accompaniments are rather perfunctory. Silvestri absolutely shines in all of his concerto recordings. I have all three of the Toscanini/Horowitz Tchaikovsky Piano Concertos, but the 6 May 1941 "Studio" is still my favorite of the three because of the sheer insanity of it. Many have restored and reissued it, but mine, restored from '78s on my main channel IMO is the best sound. th-cam.com/video/HS4MQt8czdA/w-d-xo.html Check out my wife's documentary linked in the Description. After that is Stokowski's New Philharmonia in glorious Phase 4 sound. Everybody else is below those. Kletzki and Celibidache are both excellent conductors but I have heard neither of their T5s and will check to see if they are on TH-cam and give them a listen.

      I'm sort of slumming it here as there are going to be a number of EMI recordings coming up that needed very little work, just some hum, a few tape dropouts, and minor noise reduction. They are all referenced in a radio broadcast about Silvestri that will be coming soon. (Assuming they don't get copyright blocked).

I remember when Groves was in charge and it was a pretty ropey sound he produced Silvestri took over and the first concert was dreadful. I didn't attend another concert for months BUT, he scheduled a work I wanted to see and so I bit the bullet and went. The orchestra had been utterly transformed. He had rebuilt the orchestra. Class. Quality. Musicianship. I attended every concert until I moved to London. Was he died, I was shocked and deeply saddened. The music world had lost an unsung giant.

    I don't think I've ever heard the finale of this symphony sound so fresh. The pacing is lovely and lets everything dance and be heard, with beautiful clarity, and a terrific bombast-free ending. There seems to be no repertoire that Silvestri couldn't refresh! Terrific Berlioz too (all the programme). This must be a recent find? Good sound too. Thanks for this treat.

    • @constantinsilvestrigar
      @constantinsilvestrigar 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The vast majority of the broadcast were from Silvestri's off-the-air recordings that were saved by principal clarinet Ray Carpenter. Ray wasn't really interested in these as concerts and would just quest Wessex Archive which is storing the tapes. Ray gave me the Berlioz and Baermann, but did not have the other two pieces. I got the complete concert from one of the BSO's violinists although he wasn't sure of what the original source was. Unfortunately, he did not have any other material that wasn't from Ray. Silvestri recorded a good majority of the broadcasts at 1 7/8 IPS on a single track of a quarter-track stereo machine with just a handful at 3 3/4 IPS. The tapes have poor fidelity with large quantities of dropouts. The source for this was from a lossy digital compression source with primitive noise reduction on top of that. Clearly the mystery original source was excellent, and the damage caused by the transfer to lossy digital wasn't enough to not give me better results than most of the broadcasts. When I saw the B5 I thought "Well this is probably going to be the best performance I have ever heard". Silvestri did not disappoint.

    A perfect upload of a remarkable performance without a single cue 'blip'. The sound is rather dated and a bit close. The balance tends to favour the soloist but the performance is of such high quality, it doesn't matter. Many, many thanks for this treasure. BTW, I saw Silvestri many times in the UK West Country.

      East European labels were not exactly known for their state-of-the art sound and pressings. Electrecord released several CD reissues indicating the master tapes weren't too bad. I don't remember if I have any Hungaroton CDs that come from this vintage. Yes, indeed, this is by far my favorite performance. But then many of Silvestri's recordings are my favorite performances and Pally perfectly captures an authentic style.
