One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs from one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums. I listen to this song and I hear someone remembering how life seemed before they grew older and life became more complicated, how the road ahead seemed so full of possibility and you can still see that possibility when you look back, except that now you've run your course. It's memory and hope and happiness and regret all wrapped up together. You've taken steps forward, but find yourself sleepwalking back again, dragged by the force of some inner tide. The visual produced by the last sentence of this song, 'the dawn mist glowing, the water flowing, the endless river, forever and ever', (which happens to be the last song of this album), would appear on the cover of their next album, 'The Endless River'. The cover of endless river shows a guy on a boat, amidst a faint glow of dawn, on a boat, in an endless body of water that goes as far as the eye goes. I don't know if this was deliberate on the band's part, but an album cover being a reference to the visuals of a song on an album produced two decades before is just creative genius.
This song gets me. Every time. I'm almost 28, still young, but I already feel the message. Life slips on. I've wasted a lot of time. And I'm trying so hard to not let it pass me by any longer.

My grandpa listened to this album on his death bed. He was a lifelong pink floyd fan and this album came out as he was dying, it came full circle. Always made this album feel more profound to me growing up. He died when I was very young so I never got to know him, but have always felt connected through music and especially pink floyd. Inherited a beautiful classical spanish guitar from him that was made in 1932 in Madrid Spain, one of my most cherished possessions by far. Hope to pass it on as a family heirloom one day, crazy to think the guitar will be 100 years old in only 12 years...
Life is a constant flow. A wandering river. A continual search for something more. Something better. Something different. When you get to be my age you look back at where you have been ,and the bad memories fade, and those moments you Cherish hold strong. Indeed the grass was greener. Enjoy every moment now. 👍
Life is like speed. Aceleration/change is what you feel. Constant velocity feels like nothing. you can be travelling at hundreds of miles an hour and not feel a thing. only a change of pace gives you perspective to appreciate how far you've come.
To get a greater appreciation for this song, the Pulse version would have been better. It illustrates so beautifully David playing all three types of guitar. I tear up each time, especially during the slide steel.
Jamel, you're right about the division bell being a reference for when it's time to choose which way to go. It's a reference to an old practice in the British Parliament when it was time to take a vote. The members of the House of Commons would be in a large lobby, discussing the issue, and when the bell rang, they had to go through one of two doors, to be counted. So when the division bell rings, it's time to take sides, which is like the end of innocence.
A division of opinion, of paths. What an insight! This is just a testament to the genius of their music. Thank you for the clarification and understanding!
Storm Angelus i liked to think this is Gilmour's way of trying to get Waters to wipe the slate clean and become friends again. The Final Cut album is where Gilmour and Waters had a major dispute and Gilmour took his name off the production when the album was released. Years later, Gilmour tried to ask Waters if they could forgive each other. Reference to one song on Division Bell, where Gilmour says, "I asked if we could wipe the slate clean.. but they tell me to please go fuck myself." That was was Waters telling Gilmour that. Gilmour stated that Waters's assistant gave the message to him. The lyrics on this song, to me, reference how great the were musically and they were still hungry for creativity but Waters's troubles and his father was the main area for writing his lyrics. In one line Gilmour says in High Hopes, "Dragged by the force of some inner tide." Maybe this means that Waters was full of pain about his father's death, which is part of what The Wall album is about. After knowing about this history, this final song of the album, speaks to me that Gilmour wants his friend back.
Final song on their album The Division Bell (1994). Roger Waters (bassist/vocalist), the man behind Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall, left the band in the early 80s, it was a messy divorce and Waters tried to sue them for using the Pink Floyd name after he left. David Gilmour (guitarist/vocalist) wrote The Division Bell based on all that, with the general theme of communication and the lack thereof. Some more good songs from Division Bell: Keep Talking, What Do You Want From Me, Marooned, A Great Day For Freedom.
Keep Talking, in my opinion, is an absolute must listen. If you've ever been so twisted up inside and desperately needing to find a way to say what you need to, but can't get the words out - it's the perfect song. Whenever I've been having trouble saying what I need to say, I play it and my fiancé recognizes what's going on inside me, so he steps back and gentles his approach of how he deals with me, since I tend to have such difficulty verbalizing my inner turmoil at times. Music is a gift!
This song is about time- how we use it, how we lose it, how we remember it, how we act within it. The marching refers to time's marching forward. It's a song about nostalgia, and all the feelings, good and bad, that nostalgia evokes. David Gilmour and his wife (the lyricist) capture the anguish of a life lived more fulfillingly in the past, with a future merely consisting of memories and decay. It's a masterpiece.
I think Marooned is close to the best cut on the album. It is so underrated. Lyrically brilliant bringing forth so many emotions. At 68 yrs old, I feel their music from so far back and it touches me to the core.
Thank you for reacting to a track from The Division Bell. It seems like this album is largely underappreciated even though it is, in my opinion, one of their best albums. There are so many great Floyd albums, though, that don't get the attention that they should. Check out Childhood's End from their Obscured By Clouds album.
While I agree it sounds like Gilmour is talking about Waters. However, Gilmour said it wasn't true in an interview. Still listen to this one on MiniDisc!
The lyrics/words are good on bell, but not the best, only because it was only co written by Gilmour. But, the emotions brought out by the music... The lyrics just add to the landscape you are already teleported to. High hopes IS one of my favorite Floyd songs, but partially because of being AT the pulse concert in 1994. This song was impressive in person.
Pink Floyd's ability to add layers of rythm, melodies and harmonies together are unmatched, in my opinion. They have a sound that's truly their own and god bless them for it. I'd like to see his reaction to Childhood Ends. It's a prime example of musical layering.
To me... it’s honestly the deepest song in their catalog. I saw them in Cleveland in 94 for the Division Bell tour, unforgettable. Mesmerizing from start to finish, and promotes a deeper train of thought.
I went on many trips with my dad as a kid. He always played Pink Floyd during the trip, when i listen to the wall, the division bell or the dark side of the moon I can almost feel the cool and clean air of the forests we had to go through and the thoughts of looking through the window of the car amazed by the mountains, forests, rivers and waterfalls. I really miss those moments...
You approach Pink Floyd, with the awe and wonder of someone who has never heard Pink Floyd, but every time. Totally relatable! No matter how many time I hear these masters, I feel like it's the first time I hear them. I feel like "legendary" isn't even enough to describe them.
Hey Jamal! Love your takes on all of the Pink Floyd songs. So happy to see someone enjoying these songs for the first time, as I did so many years ago. Your reactions always bring a smile to my face. God bless you brother!
Pink Floyd has continuously put notes and lyrics together that stir's memories...creates pictures in our minds while evoking feelings we once had.....many of their songs and lyrics remind me of a time when I was not afraid of the outcome....not afraid of failure...... not limited by day after day of being told to fall in line and keep quiet...... I think this is why I enjoy them so much..... good for y soul and my mind...
The sense of melancholy, of a life passed, of rights and wrongs, the weeping of the guitar at what had passed and a wish to return to the greener days, the song sums it up, Polly Samson's lyrics with the solo interpretation of the words, just catches me and leaves the eye moist and the heart yearning for better days, possibly my fav song, a life long Floydian
This WAS Pink Floyd's last studio session as a group (1994), until 2014 when they released The Endless River album which were mainly comprised of unreleased recordings done during the Division Bell sessions. The Endless River was a tribute to Richard Wright (founding member and keyboardist) who had passed in 2008 and who written/co-written and performed many of the songs on the newly released recordings. This song (High Hopes) was the last song on The Division Bell and the album title of the new album [The Endless River] was the second to last lyric in this song and the last song that represented Rick Wright's talents, that was until 2014. Remaining Members David Gilmour and Nick Mason added new material to complete the new album. The band basically called it quits after that as only two original members remained.
This is such a great and well crafted song! I remember hearing this 26yrs ago when this album came out and it blew me away. Pink Floyd is one of those bands that is timeless and will never be forgotten!

Your age and if you were in relatively good health, 40/60 is good odds all things considered. And on a vent. Being around respiratory therapists, vent patients, and hospitals in general (hospitals are no place to get better), you're lucky as hell. Don't take your health for granted. You're going to want to keep an eye on your health and your lungs from this point forward so check in with your GP and ask what you might need to do and what to keep an eye on in the future. Good luck!
My favorite pink Floyd song, there’s such a creepy melancholy in the chords and the producing it induces nostalgia for a time you haven’t been alive for
I remember Roger Waters called this album, "a fair forgery." I'm a Waters fan, but I could not disagree more. This is a solid Floyd album. I think Roger later said he was just bitter.
Actually, it was the previous album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, that Waters called a forgery. But both Gilmour PF records are better than any RW solo effort.
@@Pairface I believe he said Division Bell was "rubbish" maybe because Gilmour's wife wrote or co-wrote some of the songs. I don't agree that it is rubbish. And Waters may have been bitter. I respectfully disagree that MLoR and Division Bell are "better" than RW's solo efforts. Really, it's an "apples and oranges" thing because Waters tend to create albums linked by a theme, (just as he did with Pink Floyd's The Wall, Animals, Wish You Were Here, and Dark Side of the Moon)
I LOVE this song to the farest planet of the universe and back. High hopes is an anthem to me. I’m middle age, I remember when I was young. And now… Oh boy, it hurts sometimes. We dreamed of what was to come, not realising it was right then. We were in the thick of it and we didn’t know. Yeah, it hurts sometimes
When small bits of your life stop happening in gradual stages until you're left with a shell and you can't quite be who you were and in your heart, still are. It's a strong spice, isn't it? I feel it too.
@@Torthrodhel yep. At a certain age you realise you have more past than future. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it does require adjustment. Time to reflect instead of goals to reach. So far, I’m fairly happy about the life I’ve led. I was there, I made a difference. But now? Hm… Sowing is an act of hope, reaping is an act of reckoning. I didn’t expect that

One of the best Pink Floyd songs ever. And a completely underrated album. Saw them live at the Carrier Dome for the Division Bell tour and to this day, best concert I've ever been to.
Hi Jamal, pleasure watchng your reactions. You ain't done "Money" yet??? Get ON it homey! Also, friendly tip, "Sorrow" will grab and drag you to heaven.
I've spent the last couple of hours watching you discover one of my all-time favorite bands as I've watched your Pink Floyd playlist. Such a joy watching someone else discover them for the first time! Up until this one, everything you've watched before was from their '70s era, most of which was written by their bass player, Roger Waters. But this particular song/album is from the mid-90s, long after Roger had left the band. This song was written by guitarist David Gilmour and his wife. A lot of people are suggesting some really early stuff, and I think that's a pretty good idea, but most of them are suggesting some really weird and obscure stuff. I think there are two particular early songs, from the first two albums -- when they had a different guitarist named Syd Barrett (which is the guy "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" is about) -- that you'd really enjoy. They really show the early journeys, the predecessors to the ones you've so obviously been enjoying. I suggest that if you want to go back to where they began, start at the very beginning in 1967 with "Astronomy Domine," the very first song on their very first album. Then, listen to "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun." from their second album. Enjoy!
Miguel Ramos definitely sn underrated album though it is a perfect following on The Wall it is also like Roger Waters first solo album with David Gilmore and Nick Mason coming in as guest musicians
This is later Floyd. Only took me 26 years, but it's finally starting to grow on me! The lyrics have always been great but I miss the touch Roger Waters would put on all the PF works.
How about a palate-cleanser after this? One of the best story-songs ever, "El Paso" by Marty Robbins. (There's a good lyrics videos seven or eight down, the first one that says lyrics only has the lyrics in the description.)
I will cry when David leaves us. He's given so much to the world. Pink Floyd is the one band that has stayed with me since day one, since the moment I heard comfortably numb for the first time. Still have that vivid memory of 8 years ago.

High Hopes is one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. I still remember the cd and track number for the jukebox in the local bar from years ago. 53-11.
ONE OF MY FAVORITES FROM THEM WHEN IT COMES TO THE SOUL OF THE GUITAR IS "MAROONED" YOU CAN FEEL EVERY NOTE...SPINE TINGLING!!!
I think Marooned is close to the best cut on the album. It is so underrated. Lyrically brilliant bringing forth so many emotions. At 68 yrs old, I feel their music from so far back and it touches me to the core.
PF defines “soundscape”. The music alone is so full of emotion before the lyrics even factor in
That's why they are my favorite. In my opinion they've been able to say more without words than any other band I've come across.
This song is epic, the live versions he ends him playing the acoustic after the slide guitar... Amazing.
The album was mostly written by David Gilmour's wife
Childhoods' End directly into Free Four.
mike mclaughlin you can tell. Waters was a lyrical genius. She isn’t.
Pink Floyd Welcome to the machine
Nothing like listening to Dave Gilmour😃👍seems like a different era for me. Great reaction jamal.
Pink Floyd's ability to add layers of rythm, melodies and harmonies together are unmatched, in my opinion. They have a sound that's truly their own and god bless them for it. I'd like to see his reaction to Childhood Ends. It's a prime example of musical layering.
Happy Saturday Night Man good to hear more Pink Floyd.
To me... it’s honestly the deepest song in their catalog. I saw them in Cleveland in 94 for the Division Bell tour, unforgettable. Mesmerizing from start to finish, and promotes a deeper train of thought.
Man I'm having college flashbacks. My roommate loved Floyd.
I was like six or seven.
My dad bought this when it dropped.
Jamel, your reaction is same as mine... this is my fav Pink Floyd song... so powerful so deep, so dark. Amazing song.
David Gilmour is such a masterful musician and storyteller! The way he delivers these lyrics in this song.......🔥🔥🔥
This whole album was a masterpiece, as well as the PULSE tour that followed
You approach Pink Floyd, with the awe and wonder of someone who has never heard Pink Floyd, but every time. Totally relatable! No matter how many time I hear these masters, I feel like it's the first time I hear them. I feel like "legendary" isn't even enough to describe them.
Jamel, here's a life changing Pink Floyd request; "Careful With That Axe Eugene". Dangerously great!
There are so pretty wild live versions floating around the utube.
Indeed! Excellent recommendation
It was about time!! I was thinking about telling to react to this one hehe, peace my friend 🤟🏻
👍🏾
The entire Division Bell.....!!!!
Watching your reaction the first time you hear any Pink Floyd song is absolutely priceless.
Welcome to the club, my friend.
"On The Turning Away" is another deep song you might enjoy. It's on 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason.'
Probably my favorite song of all time. I want to live in that solo
It's all a journey by listening to this masterpiece!
Multilayered, and beautiful! Mr. Gilmour with that voice of honey and wood smoke.
Nightwish does an amazing live version of this song. Def worth checking out. =)
Bill B. Epic
It's ok.... no lap steel solo at the end, and tthat kills it for me.
@@mikemclaughlin3306 What fun would a carbon copy of the Pink Floyd version be? Obviously, the point was to do it their way.
I could watch an hour long reaction to one of their entire albums. We're all stuck inside, what else are we gonna do?
I HIGHLY recommend you listen to the live version from Pulse. Dave has an acoustic outro that is pure bliss
This is such a great and well crafted song! I remember hearing this 26yrs ago when this album came out and it blew me away. Pink Floyd is one of those bands that is timeless and will never be forgotten!
I really like the Division Bell album it was one my dad had so I grew up with it. I think the song "Keep Talking" is my favourite from that album.
The Division bell summons MP’s to the voting chambers in the UK parliament, so you got it spot on!👌👍
FYI, the term "division bell" refers to a bell rung in Parliament to alert members that a vote is coming up.
Indeed, but it's also highly symbolic of the divisive nature of politics.
One of my favorite songs by Pink Floyd. The slide guitar at the end is amazing.
How about a "quarentine full album reaction of the dark side of the moon" or "the wall album" :D stay safe man
That would be awesome.
The Wall would be fitting.
I'll 2nd that!!
The Wall, IMHO, is too overdone, although it's a quintessential part of PF. Maybe Animals?
@@stormangelus6638 i put the wall for the amount of time it Will take, animals also would be awesome and i forgot to add the live at Pompei concert 😄
Posted on my birthday! Yay! One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs.....just so melodic and "eerie"....u nailed it! Great wispy, mysterious song! Thanks.:)
Happy Birthday 🙌🏾
Please keep the videos coming buddy
I’ve been stuck in the hospital for 6 days and just came off the ventilator I had a 40/60 chance of pulling through even though I’m only 26 please everyone be safe and follow the guidelines age has nothing to do with it
🙏🏾
Be safe bro. Blessings
God Bless you
Stay safe. My brother now has the virus as well. I hope he makes it.
Good luck!
My favorite pink Floyd song, there’s such a creepy melancholy in the chords and the producing it induces nostalgia for a time you haven’t been alive for
I remember Roger Waters called this album, "a fair forgery."
I'm a Waters fan, but I could not disagree more. This is a solid Floyd album. I think Roger later said he was just bitter.
Actually, it was the previous album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, that Waters called a forgery. But both Gilmour PF records are better than any RW solo effort.
He got gelous!
First listened to it when I was like 6-7 and always thought it was (and overall Pink fLoyd's work) so pleasing and interesting to the ears. Felt like I was told stories songs after songs after songs. Incredible work and great reacton Jamel, as usual. Take care buddy
I've heard this before, but I've heard the Nightwish cover more often, so this feels different, it's more eerie, more sad and less angry.
Have been listening to them for 40 years and I still get goosebumps EVERY SINGLE TIME.
"Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and hold on for the ride ;-)
Pompeii version!!
I didn’t expect that
@@Torthrodhel it’s nice though, to be the sage who has the answers to most questions that youngsters come up with, and at least a seasoned opinion about new stuff that comes along. We know about, and see right through, wannabe new schemes. There’s that at least
@@Tacko14 thankyou, I think I'm at an earlier stage in it than you then. The dismay hasn't quite worn off yet. Nice to see the next bit. I do like having answers for people, it is nice. :)
Now you have to listen to Keep Talking and Coming Back To Life off this album...you'll love them!
YES, YES, OMG YES! "Keep Talking" and "Coming Back To Life" renew my hope for humanity. And the groove is deep with both tracks.
One of the best Pink Floyd songs ever. And a completely underrated album. Saw them live at the Carrier Dome for the Division Bell tour and to this day, best concert I've ever been to.
"Steps taking forward but sleep walking back again" I mean, think about this shit!
Yes . We LOVE Pink Floyd. Deep.
Enjoy!
Please "FINAL CUT" and "The Gunners Dream" -Pink Floyd
Miguel Ramos definitely sn underrated album though it is a perfect following on The Wall it is also like Roger Waters first solo album with David Gilmore and Nick Mason coming in as guest musicians
I've been listening to Pink Floyd for over 50 YEARS. I'm so happy you could join us Jamal. Better late than never...
This is later Floyd. Only took me 26 years, but it's finally starting to grow on me! The lyrics have always been great but I miss the touch Roger Waters would put on all the PF works.
Pink Floyd is like no other, Masters of music ☝️
Right now with the coronavirus the perfect song by them would be "Sorrow"
Has always been one of my favourites! I have told people to bury me to this song, and not to cry too much on the guitar solo.
Dude you gotta check out “Sorrow” if you haven’t yet. It’s so fuckin’ awesome, like all their songs
Coming back to life from that CD is very good. Great guitar work and David's voice is outstanding.
If you're going to down a Pink Floyd route listen to "The Gunners Dream" from the Final Cut album
This is one of my favorites. I listened to this one all the time in art class for inspiration.
You up for an out-of-this-world journey?
Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive
I seen them live twice, and I miss them, I love a lot of music, but they help me through everything, peace and love and light, life.
Nightwish does a respectable cover of this with Marko on Vocals
Yes, absolutely. It's great version of this great song.
