How to Volley: The Basics

  • Many would argue that the net is the scariest place in all of tennis... at least that's how it seems with how reluctant my players are to crash the net. Yet the truth remains that good net play has the highest percentage of points won - even in today's fast game. Hopefully this video will help new players get more comfortable at the net by developing the fundamentals necessary for success.

    Excellent video. Thank you.
This video reminds me of a lesson I had maybe 40 years ago. The instructor said to keep the volley out in front of you and the swing should be less than an inch to contact… he may have been exaggerating the amount of swing you need but I found it to be great advice.

That is very kind! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I’m actually working on a slice serve video right now so hopefully that will be out around the weekend. Again, thank you for the encouragement!

Thank you for the encouragement! I’m definitely in the learning process. The video length has been a definite struggle to nail down so I really appreciate your feedback. I’ll try to shorten things up moving forward.
      Really appreciate the help!

Definitely in the works. Didn’t have my players on hand when I filmed that one so I hope to post a follow up soon. Thanks!

You’re right, it certainly could get out of hand if not done correctly. As usual, balance is key…. It seems good weight transfer forward (normally through the step) was a consistent action I observed when watching the big dogs hitting in Cincinnati this year. It seems the only time they did not do this was when the ball was coming too fast. Most of my players don’t have to worry about that kind of pace so teaching them the balanced and controlled weight transfer is helpful:)
      Thanks for the comment!
