Hi Harry, another great clip, I always give your clips a run through before making similar products - like your style. Why not cut the point before grooving using a guide - understand why you do it for the other end however?

To hear I live so close to a supplier of good leather is heartening, but then I suppose that if you can't get good leather in Walsall, where can you get it? I need a good belt, and I think I could manage to make one, if I can get a blank long enough to do the job!!! I'm going to have a go though, so I hope I can find a suitable blank. Buddy if you cut the point then use your groover you wouldn't have to free hand it. You could follow along the cut edge. That's how I do mine and it's a lot easier.

Hi George...I mark out from the ends and have any long or short stitches in the straight run where they are less noticeable...one can use a single point awl on the joining area to even out the spacing to make it even more ...well even !

Hello Harry, On other YT videos I have seen the saddle stitch incorporate a turn around the needle shaft as it is passed through the work, but I cannot see you doing this (or you are doing it on the other side away from the camera?) is there not a need for this interlocking?

Just a thought, wouldn't it be better to start punching your stitching holes from the tip end so you can get the stitch right on the point or is it me being too finicky, great video by the way I have learnt a lot from them thanks
Hi Harry I have just started making belts I had an old one that need restitching so I did that and found it rewarding so I bought a blank, I have just finished it today it took around a week there's a couple of mistakes I have made not putting in a deep enough groove for the stitches for one and I didn't know about burnishing the edges until I saw your video I am gradually buying the tools that I need (they don't come cheap) and hope to make more ( I need the practice lol)

The purpose of the edge stitching is strictly decorative? It doesnot strengthen the edge or keep it from wearing. I really enjoyed your video. I am making a Ranger style gun belt with holsters Most belt makers in the US machine stitch.
I think since this is my first project I will reduce the stitchery to the minimum needed. I plan on making a bandolier type belt with a concho clasp. I am used to wearing tool belts and they are useless without suspenders to help them. Most of the time they are f a lling down without suspenders. The pistol I have is an 1847 model and loaded weighs 5 pounds. It is cap and ball so the belt has no bullet loops. I think the machine stitch must be only up and down while you are double stitching by hand. Thanks for the informative video. I think.I will groove the le ather for decoration. I have the edge grooving tool.
Hi Harry, Having watched a few of your leatherworking videos, I have made my first belt, i'm pleased with it apart from that I didn't bevel the edge prior to burnishing it. Oh OK ...youre right the trimmings from the belt would be too crumbly...odd as its incredibly strong as a belt but not as a trimming...a bit like rope versus a rope fibre.
hope alls well across the ocean bro, I wanted ask a question, "when I stitch down a belt it wants to draw up like a horseshoe, is there a technique to this problem, i have had them straighten some what when both sides are finished but having said this i have had some ruined to the point of being completely trashed:-)
Hello Gene...I only stitch the buckle holes area so this is not a problem...but it sounds like a tension issue..so perhaps try easing off the tension in the stitches? Just a thought. Rgds Harry

I also got the Seiwa European Stitching Chisel at the same time. really nice quality. The strap end punches are really sharp and good quality, not like some of the Chinese stuff off of ebay!

Cut the strap before making the grove for the stitching. You can use edge to quide your groove-making-tool-thing-whatever.

No need for the interlocking, but yes some people do it this way.

Thanks Mark, for individual strap pieces, Ebay is probably good, also look at The Identity Store Matlock online, and for larger pieces Abbey England.

I think Nigel Armitage has recently brought out a book on belt making. It gets very good reviews on Amazon, and Nigel is very talented.

Tom Monaghan Dixon's have closed so second-hand on ebay...you can doubtless get a modern equivalent!

4 times length of stitches for the thread..and the hole is to match in with whatever buckle you are using
