First of all, you are my go-to for sewing tutorials, love your videos! Second of all, I don't understand the criticism of your voice, there's nothing wrong with it. If anyone has watched any amount of other youtube tutorials, they would find that your voice is one of the most pleasing, clear and easy to understand. Keep talking!!❤
Thank you, I made a kimono style dressing gown by just extending the front pieces for more ‘wrap over’ and making it ankle length. I then added a belt to tie around. It’s gorgeous and I’m so proud that I cut my own pattern!
I just made a sample kimono from your video, but I used your system of folding the fabric in half then in half again, so there are no shoulder seams. Fast project, and comfortable and beautiful!
Hi Ms. Shay! I’m 11 ( my birthday was actually yesterday) and I have been watching your videos since 2019! I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos! I actually just made the circle blouse and it came out great! I will make this very soon! Air hugzzzz!
Smita, well let me take a moment and wish you the most wonderful Birthday! May this year of your life is full of wonders and creativity, great friends and adventure! Wow, you are 11 and you sew already - that is amazing! I am so glad that you loved the circle blouse - I really like it too! Happy sewing and Happy Birthday!
You have no idea how long I have waited for this. I purchased some fabric with St. Judes kid's art on it. Yes, cotton, but this is what I want to make with it!!! Thank you.
This was my first-ever Thoughtful Creativity project. Thank you, Alisa, for these excellent videos and instruction sheets! I made lots of mistakes (this is only the second garment that I've ever sewed) but learned so much! My finished product is BEAUTIFULLY-CONSTRUCTED (if I do say so myself) thanks to your expert guidance on paying attention to the details! Thank you!
I've been sewing for over 45 years but hardly at all in the last 10 so am feeling very rusty. I love your explanations, your delivery and the simplicity of this creation. Thank you for this lovely video! It's perfect for what I want to make
I've been looking for hours for a kimono type pattern, and yours is the first one that I can fully comprehend. Thank you SO much for taking the time to help people like me, I am looking forward to sewing this for my daughter tomorrow! It will be the 2nd clothing item I have ever made. Fingers crossed!!
You caught my eye at the word " Kimono "...they are sooooooo cute, & stylish...!! Kimonos are one of my fave garments. Styles are sooooo pretty, elegant & beautiful. Wowwww this was very simple...luvvv this channel. Thanks so much for this tutorial..!! #YESSS#LUVVV#👍👍👍#🙂🙂🙂❤❤
This was one of the first projects that I ever did and now I'm revisiting to make one (hopefully much nicer) as a birthday gift for my mom 😊 thank you so much for your videos, I've learned a lot. Love from Uruguay❤
Thanks, Alisa, for your excellent tutorial. I made the cardigan using rayon (black with gold flowers and Japan-style trees) and it's beautiful! I'd like to share about two problems I faced, so that other beginners can benefit from my experience. Firstly, I had made the cardigan to end about 5 cm below my waist, but realized, after making the cardigan, that this length was not sufficient to tie the cardigan at the bottom. I ended up sewing on a button and buttonhole at the bottom of the cardigan to hold it in place, so all's good. Secondly, the hardest part of making the cardigan was sewing the armpit area well enough that three seams meet nice and flat - I had to do this a few times over but couldn't get this done as well as you did. I'm not sure why I faced that problem, and am wondering if it was because I did not manage to maintain my 5/8 inch seam width consistently with all three seams, due to imperfect sewing or cutting. Fortunately, the design is very forgiving - the imperfect sewing at the armpit is hidden by the fabric of the sleeve. All's well that ends well! Your super clear and helpful instructions made sewing the rest of the cardigan, from start to end, smooth-sailing. Thank you!
Your take on the kimono is just beautiful! Love your fabric choice! Love the alterations you’ve suggested as to width, length sleeves or garment body and the roll lapel gives the right amount of structure. Wonderful job and thank you so much for sharing this. 😊😊
this is on my "to try" list. i am making notes of what type of fabric for which garment. which you have suggested below. and about to look for the paper for the drafting which you have also added a link below. then some decent cottens then i am all ready to search for some fabric. Thank you Alisa. x
Love all of your tutorials and the videos are greatly appreciated. Have been watching from the sidelines to get the courage to do DIY pattern like this one. I am going to give it a go, and will try to create this into a robe. May have to go back and watch this video again, but thats ok. So Thank you again with these clear instructions.
This was a wonderfully detailed video. I don't usually sew clothing, but you explained the process so well that I'm excited to make a couple for my daughters and myself.
Thank you for this video! 🙂 It looks so easy that I am already thinking what colour do I want to make. And that this pattern could also be good for bathrobe, just make longer and select more suitable fabric.
Thank you for this excellent tutorial, I just made a kimono and it's the first time I do a pattern of my own with my measurements. It went okey, but I somehow managed to do the front wrong so my shoulder seams are a bit down at the arm. However, instead of feeling sorry for the not perfect, but totally fine, result, I'm going to take one of your other tips and make the garment three times to practise :) Thank you again!
Alisa, thank you so much for all the wonderful videos! I would like to make this kimono with a zipper for after my surgery. Do you have any advice how to do this? Thank you
Malia, hello there! I wish all of the best and easy recovery after surgery. As for the zipper - absolutely, instead of the little "lapel/band" that goes from bottom and around the neck - just draft a facing for the jacket and install a zipper. I have a very useful Members Extra that shows exactly how to do that. Just make sure that your jacket is wide enough for the front pattern pieces to meet in the middle and zip up. Here's the video - th-cam.com/video/YXuS9ovlJjk/w-d-xo.html
Ooooh, it would be SO perfect, it will also give it this "wear with anything" character, as double gauze as a fabric goes great with variety of other fibers! Just "lock the edges" of the double gauze as it can unravel like crazy!
This is an awesome pattern. I made it for my mom and it came out perfectly, very flattering design. Making one for myself now 😊 Thanks for the detailed tutorial!
Thank you for posting this video. Your kimono looks great! I drafted my pattern today from your instructions and I'm going to try it on a sheet first so I'll be fully prepared for when I find the fabric I want to use. It's only my second project at home, but with your skills in presenting this video, I have every confidence that it will work out great Thanks for the inspiration and Happy Easter!
Hello Delilah! I have checked out your channel - you have a LOVELY personality and a beautiful voice! Everything comes with practice, it is going to be 3 years in May since I started my channel and it has been a journey, for sure! Hi Alisa! This is such pretty and versatile project. And your fabric choice is so beautiful! I'm not sure about calling it a Kimono though, as the it has it's own historical and cultural meaning. Although it is clearly inspired by Japanese clothing with the wide, boxy sleeves (which I love so much). Anyway, love your creativity! It is amazing how you keep coming up with these wonderful projects!
Thank you for this tutorial 💕 I'm going to refashion a summer dress, soon, so I've been looking for ideas on what to refashion it into.. I think I've found my refashion inspiration 🥰
This pattern design process reminds me of a face mask design that uses your hand as the ruler. You use the body measurements as the ruler so the kimono fits 😊. TY.
I love your videos. You explain things so clearly and your videos are sooo good. Can you do a tutorial on drafting a simple nightgown. I have a beautiful bed sheet I want to turn into a nightgown. Thanks.

I have been watching your tutorials, for quite awhile, and I love the way you teach, especially using the body measurements and putting it on paper and sewing it up, your amazing. I finely decided to make this pattern. Only one question, when I add the seam allowance, do I also add to the shoulders and neck. I am very new at drafting. Thank you for your teaching times💓
Cynthia, hello there - seam allowance is needed when you join two pieces of fabric together, so if you're joining anything at the neck, then seam allowance is needed. Same with hem allowance - if you are hemming your sleeves and bottom - then add them allowance. I have a video about seam allowances that may help you!
I just bought fabric called bow wow chow mein with dogs eating noodles in a Asian alley. The back of this kimono would look great with a panel of this fabric
I made a second on this week using seersucker. It’s really bad. It’s a tent! I cut about 6.5 cm off each side. It’s better, but the back is straight like a rod. Zero curves - it drapes like plywood. Elastic does not seem to be a good choice because even a small piece will pull the front around. Should I shorten it to waist length and add a small hidden zipper to the front? Or reuse the cloth for something else? I guess I could cut it to waist length then make it more fitted to the waist, gather the cut material and sew it back on like a peplum. What would you do?
Paula, hello there! The fabric choice here needs to be drapey for a more "fitted" look and "crisp" woven if your going for a structures look. You are absolutely right - elastic will pull the front to the back, there is not much we can do to the back at this point as it has been cut already - other options would be to do small darts or pleats in the back, do small gather in the back, add a tie on each side so that you can tie it in the back... BUT if you really don't feel it - just reuse the fabric for something else, otherwise sometimes you can try to salvage something and end up exhausting yourself and the fabric. PS: I did a video on which fabric ai use for which project, I am not sure if you saw it - but it might help. Also, have you seen the Members video for this cardigan? It has more information in that helps as well :)
Can’t wait to try and make this. I love wearing these style of tops. Never thought to make one but I will now try. Love the fabric choice. It’s beautiful 🌺🌸
Thank you so much for all of your fabulous videos. I made this kimono into a bathrobe length for a Christmas gift and it came out very nicely. I do not usually use slippery or silky type fabrics and for this I used a brand new ball point needle and tried to hand crank to get started, but did have some challenges with handling the fabric at times. I am interested in any suggestions you have for working with this type of fabric or specific fabric types you would recommend for a novice? Thanks and I look forward to trying other garments from your tutorials!
Hi Fern. I have only used this type of fabric once. When you said hand crank, was it that the top edge of the seam, as soon as you started sewing, was getting "eaten" and causing a jam? I am thinking two things. 1) Use a leader piece of fabric, maybe a small scrap of cotton. Sew from top..or even start sewing a bit past the top edge...to bottom of the scrap. Do not remove the scrap or cut the thread. Now put the top of the kimono seam right up next to this fabric and sew your seam. When finished, snip the thread to release the cotton fabric. This will not be necessary when sewing around the sleeve as you will have fabric in front of and behind the needle. 2) Some machines come with two metal plates which cover the area under the needle. One is for straight stitch only and has a small hole. This should help with your fabric not being pulled into the hole. The other plate is for zig zag or decorative stitches. The hole is wide. You can use this for a straight stitch but if fabric gets jammed at the beginning of a seam, use a leader fabric. (My story..My friend's daughter wanted to make her first skirt using this type of fabric. I said OK but this is not a good choice for a beginner. I decided she woukd line it by cutting the lining piece and holding both fabrics as one pattern piece. Well we ended up with some puckered side seams. I wonder if more pins and a walking foot (often used in quilting) would have helped feed the fabrics more evenly.) Enjoy! It is fun to learn but the learning curve can try our patience.
@@carolg.6838 Thank you for your suggestions. I will definitely try changing the plate as the fabric sometimes sinks while stitching along. Also, I have purchased Microtex needles and will try those as the ballpoint didn't really seem to make a difference. Thanks again for taking the time and for being so detailed.

PS: I did a video on which fabric ai use for which project, I am not sure if you saw it - but it might help. Also, have you seen the Members video for this cardigan? It has more information in that helps as well :)
Que lindoooooo gracias por compartir saludos desde Costa Rica

Your explanations are great! I really thank you for that! warm regards.
Glad it was helpful, my pleasure :)
I wonder if more pins and a walking foot (often used in quilting) would have helped feed the fabrics more evenly.)
Enjoy!
Thank you so much! You are so sweet!🥰❤️
