I've just worked out why there were no trekking poles back in the day. We needed 2 hands to flap in front of our faces to keep the sandflies away.😆 That was a long but good day. How lucky you were to be able to see the surrounding mountains and enjoy some sunshine. I hope you weren't locked in the hut for too long! Thanks and happy trails.
It's interesting eh ... when coming across fallen trees, and especially a grove of them - what caused all that to happen and when. Beech forests are so beautiful. No wasps yet??? Beautiful smoko spot. It's interesting trying to recognise the individual native trees and the changing ngāhere. It's certainly ankle and knee testing terrain. I do hope you were locked in Kiwi Hut too long. Bugger if you would have been bursting to go to the wharepaku.
What a big day for you both.
