Good to have a rest day zero day that is actually that. Wonderful to hear you using the Kai Tahu mita. Yeah John Wayne rode a wide horse. Glad to get to the end of it, but in other ways what a neat way to do this section. Find a buttock massage! Different sets of muscles. You've done it before - Timber Trail, and the Whangānui River. You've knocked a good chunk off. A decent feed and a good rest!
Great bike ride. Thanks
Are you on electric bikes?
That looks a fun bike ride. Will have to do that myself some time!
Great you got to experience some of the ridge in the clear. It's a special place no matter the conditions.
Good that you had a chance to use the tent! Can you get accurate information about water sources? It looked like a day without many streams en route
Yes, in general. We use the app called "Far out". We paid for the TA guide (for in Far Out). It has water source info for the whole TA. And people make comments. So we had good intell on where we could wild camp.
Those treasured sleep ins. Anything passed 6.00am for me is surprise bliss. Yeah motorbike, tent and trowel - essentials haha ... and of course food. The reckons of the orange poles. Aside from TA triangles, TA signs in our garden - we also have TA poles. No one need get lost at our place 'Te Whare Kereru' I imagine having clear signage and markers is very reassuring and comforting. 6.00am this morning the sky was still sleeping. So dark. Feels such a sudden change from what seems a few mornings ago when it was bright sunny. This morning still so dark. The times they are a changing. For you - so much changing terrain, and landscapes. A constant feast for your eyes. All those trees around Tekapo - exotics of another land. Visitors. The lake itself is beautiful! I like how you introduce your day - take us through your day - and then reflect on it at days end with a summing up. Serendipity surely works in wonderous ways eh!
😊😊😊😊
Great watch as always, I did this section in knee-deep snow at the start of last season. Got a bit dodgy because I couldn't see any marker. Thankfully I watched enuff people on TH-cam do the section so I new were to go
😊😊😊😊😊
Congrats for achieving the highest point. I followed Nicki & Judy - and Kurt & Richie last season. Along with Maria, who were all sobo, and Uwe a nobo. Emptiness is yours. Of course you know it's not empty at all. In your words "it's pretty epic!" "Another good day on TA"
Oops ... Sandro is from Switzerland. He's been back to Āotearoa x2 since then. Always to do hiking in this wonderous country of ours.
Another great video. Keep on tramping.
You do realise you're collecting incredible Calendar photos. A friend of ours Sandro TA 2016/17 has just done us a second Calendar of his TA. This Calendar is July 2025-June 26. I wanted it that way to acknowledge the changed route for the 2026/27 season of then what will be walking Whangānui to Koitiata all along the beach with a 120m walk/cycle bridge being put over the Whangaehu River. Removing all the road walking. The surprises over every saddle, ridge or gully. A true feast for the eyes. Thanks for making your videos. They're are wake up viewing first thing before our morning walk. Or if TAs are staying - before we cook breakfast. Ngā mihi.
Watching today ... what a marvelous way of spending your Waitangi Day. A grunt climb indeed. Well done! You made it.
😊😊😊😊😊😊
(V) "We're tired cold and hungry" ... I liked how you then put it in perspective (J) "but no sandflies" And off you went to dinner at the Lodge. A well deserved meal after a long, cold - but exhilarating day. A good night sleep beckons!
Loving your journey. Question. What is a slink?
Love the video, interesting number you chose for the amount of times you crossed the river!😂
I'm really enjoying walking with you 😂 A realistic portrayal of the walk I'm just a bit sad I won't get to do it due to health / age, but this is certainly great to see Thank you for sharing
"Being present to what you're doing" and "watching where you put your feet" - yet you're still dedicating time to film and capture your story. Very much appreciated. As you say - "staying focused" is your entire TA. Such a vast emptiness yet full of so much. It's all about grandeur eh. Manuka Hut - palatial. Thanks for yet another 'fun' day. All with 777 river crossings 😂
Those river levels were really low compared to other seasons. Great to see, was snow at the top of travis saddle when I passed threw this section
Another excellent video.
excellent !
Pronounced Cummins 👍
It's amazing eh - how something so small (yet prolific) can be such a motivator 🦟 Good to hear the zig-zagging and not switchbacks. You wouldn't want too many late arrivers or early departers with that door latch at Comyn's Hut.
Enjoying the journey. Inspirational:)
Loving the vids. New subscriber from Hamilton.
The desolation and solitude add to the beauty and magic of it all. TAs always look so different when scrubbed up. You have to splash out from time to time. If it all helps rejuvenate the spirit and body - you go for it!
Great to catch up and start following you. Stop in at gore if you through this way on the way north. Ken and Jenny Williams. God bless
Hi Ken. We probably won't go thru Gore. But we will pop in if we do.
That shelter at harper camp site was a blessing at the end of a rainy day.
Underwater cam work is beautiful. Fortuitous to meet Dennis. That was marvelous. A man who does sooooo much for TAs and Te Araroa. A taonga himself.
Another really great day on Te Araroa. Kia ora
You rocked that pass! Staying at Deception Hut was an excellent plan. You could of course, do Goat Pass again on the Coast to Coast and you wouldn't have to negotiate the non-Bealey Track as you'd get to kayak that section 😉. Your video coverage is always exceptional but your enjoyment of the scramble up the pass nearly had me cheering. Thank you.
Another excellent video.
Great section video. Felt like I was there. Enjoying every moment of your videos. Thank you so much.
The invigoration of getting the job done. The build up and conditioning of your body before all this to prepare you for all this. Your choice of music is so often complimentary to the scenery. Beautiful. Coast to coasters are another breed again. I'm sure of the mutual respect. Jon you needed more penance. Glad you found the marker after Klondyke corner. Yeah, I could sense your dispiriting with the no obvious track to be found. I hope you let the Trust know. Again - an otherwise beautiful walk through this section. Every day is a good day. Thank you for sharing. Onward! Upward! Downward!
I'm glad I'm not the only one that couldn't find that track to bearly. 100 percent need markers out there. I gave up and went to the road and walked ova the bridge.
Well done and trail runners doing Morrison Footbridge to Klondike Corner in less than 4 hours😲
The record is 2h22m haha it's absolutely crazy. The finish line was slightly closer when the record was set on the coast to coast but only a km
Enjoy videos but not when you are filming other people in front of you Well done
Great going both of you from Tonia 😊 Raymond nearly caught you.but has been held up with his gear unfortunately
Good decision to stop at Deception. When they don't have time pressure or the threat of incoming bad weather, hikers seem to enjoy Goat Pass as much as I enjoy the videos. The Southern Rata seems to have been spectacular this year. Thank you for the continued sharing of your adventure.
Goat Pass is where one of our TAs 2017/18 from Italy - fell and broke her L arm. Compound breaks ×4. Carried on her TA with her husband to Klondyk Corner. Adrenalin had kicked in. They hitched a ride to Chch hospital. She went straight into surgery. We organised with them for her to return to us in Whangānui where she remained for 5 weeks recovering. Eventually she was reunited with her husband after a full recovery and knitted bones (tinanium pins) at Riverton where they walked together to the end at Stirling Point. They remain constant and forever friends. They still follow TA through my regular postings. Rata is stunning with the brilliant splash of crimson. Bush version of its cousin - Pōhutukawa. That is our claim to fame of Goat Pass. named a pathway in our garden after her - Gisela Pass which ascends to the Hut in our garden (Henry's Hut). Thanks for this 3 thirds section.
Very impressive day, you guys did great. Done this section myself and I no it's tuff
I've just worked out why there were no trekking poles back in the day. We needed 2 hands to flap in front of our faces to keep the sandflies away.😆 That was a long but good day. How lucky you were to be able to see the surrounding mountains and enjoy some sunshine. I hope you weren't locked in the hut for too long! Thanks and happy trails.
It's interesting eh ... when coming across fallen trees, and especially a grove of them - what caused all that to happen and when. Beech forests are so beautiful. No wasps yet??? Beautiful smoko spot. It's interesting trying to recognise the individual native trees and the changing ngāhere. It's certainly ankle and knee testing terrain. I do hope you were locked in Kiwi Hut too long. Bugger if you would have been bursting to go to the wharepaku.
... you were NOT locked in too long
What a big day for you both.
If we don't hear from you again we'll know you were eaten by sandflies! 😅 Great progress.
The track in the trees was not a fun part of the trail, I ended up taking the river after number 3 hut. Ended up at the next hut in an hour
Thanks for your updates. Informative and entertaining.
Sorry guys I will try again. Previous to my previous note I had written quite a long note to you, but in my haste to capture a photo of the brilliant early morning sky, I lost my message. Therefore my previous (short) message is a bit slack. So ... Again - thank you for using your walking pole when showing us something. I certainly do appreciate it, and it saves me trying to locate where you are talking. Your appreciation of these places (sand flies included) is certainly reflected in your words, but moreso in the tone with which you are telling your story. Thank you. Remember - you will eventually get out of sand fly country. You remind me of another bestie TA friend of ours from Switzerland who did his TA 2016/17, who went on to complete E1. When he started at the North Cape of Norway, while making his way down through northern Norway, Finland and Sweden he encountered mosquitoes and sandflies. He was up in the Arctic Circle then. That was pretty bad. But it was made worse when he began to encounter herds of Caribou - which as you know attract these insects even more. The moral of the story - be grateful you're not encountering herds of Caribou!
Im very curious how you're walking and editing and uploading as you walk?
