Or that he already had the dream nail when he found it. I've seen a few people find the bug early on then they don't return because there was nothing there.
thank you carl for being such an enjoyable presence to be around and watch- its been a rough month for me, but watching this and your terraria series have made it much better
I don't know if you read these messages Carl, but a long time ago you played a Music/Speedrun Level in SMM2 that was The Mantis Lords' theme and when I watched that I wished to see you play Hollow Knight and get to the Mantis Lords one day, we've come full circle and that is really awesome to me
What's really cool about Resting Grounds, is that no matter which path you take, you WILL end up there eventually, as no less than three areas dump you into Resting Grounds if you pursue them fully.
This game is so frickin’ good I’ve watched other people’s full play throughs something like 6 times. It’s the closest thing you can get to playing it for the first time yourself.
I like how well Carl handles spoilers and backseating in chat compared to most other streamers. Most streamers fail at actually explaining what they mean by „no spoilers“ or „no backseating“ because either they or a chat or both have a different understanding of what spoilers and backseating is and what kinds of spoilers/tips/backseating they find or don’t find ok. Carl does a good job at explain what he is ok with and what he isn’t ok with. I also like that he doesn’t act annoyed by the people trying to spoil him because respecting even the person you think is the worst/dumbest in the world is more likely to do better in the future through respect rather than anything else. I wish more streamers would handle these people more like Carl does. I don’t use twitch because my phone can’t handle it so I don’t know what his twitch chat looks like but I personally feel like the best way to prevent people from spoiling stuff is to have like a pinned message or something that explains what the streamer understands by spoilers, tips, backseating, etc. and explains what is allowed and what isn’t. Of course this is just how I would do it.
I’ve followed carl for years and had hollow knight sitting unplayed in my library for at least twice that, so him starting his playthrough was the perfect catalyst for me starting my own playthrough, really enjoying the stream and the overall experience this has brought 😎 thank you carl, looking forward to more amazing games and unique lets plays!
That's an amazing first attempt at Mantis Lords! Wow! Also, it gives my RPG loving gamer heart palpitations every time Carl skips a bench. Save Points!!!
I can tell from the Mantis Lords fight that Carl is the kind of person to walk straight up to the boss in Dark Souls and try to flex on them by drinking an Estus Flask in the middle of their widely telegraphed power attack.
Watching Carl go full ADHD to scrap together enough geo-pennies to buy a lantern rather than taking the hint that he doesn't need it yet is so on brand
One of my favorite things about Hollow Knight is the fact that new players will equip the Thorns charm because they recognize it's affordable and deals extra damage... that's the "Thorns" part... but they never remember the other half of its name. It's called the Thorns *of Agony*
The "VHS tape" is a business card with Cornifer's logo (his glasses). At least I'm pretty sure that's what it is. I thought it was a cassette tape at first too.
I've never played this game and am enjoying it through you; apparently you're finding things people are not supposed to find their first playthrough, left and right. I'm here for it though, this is flip-forking amazing!
RIP Barold (The big round guys with a smashy hammer in Crossroads are Harold and Barold; Harold guards the grub and Barold is Harold's discount sibling who stands by False Knight that most people just run past. These names are not lore, just community silly names.)
hay carl, just want to say im really enjoying this series! its great that you uploading full streams here as i miss your streams usually being in the uk time zones suck! keep up the great work!
yeah, the dream nail is one of the most controversial aspects of the game lore. Its function is to reveal the thoughts of those alive and resolve the lingering emotions that ties a spirit to the physical plane. Mechanically, that means it shows how the orange goop known as the infection affects the minds of its victims, the last thoughts of those recently dead, the fears the few still alive hold deep in their minds too afraid to voice to the world, and exorcise ghosts of the past. It is that final point that is the core issue. Canonically, it is the "right" thing to do, but not all players agree morally. In short: it ends ghosts, lets you read minds of the living, and gives hints of nearby danger from decorative corpses. It cant "kill" anything with a physical form, but spirits and ghosts have no such luxury and get removed. Purely mechanically, using the nail on a lingering spirit will remove them from the game world for nothing more than a single essence, locking away any dialogue they had. Morally, many of the spirits have found some degree of peace, most notably the graveyard; which is the reason one spirit stands guard over the rest and asks you to play nice. But if it is playing nice in the graveyard, why is the opposite expected everywhere else? Finally, there is the narrative dissonance; sure, the nail resolves the lingering regrets, but the player puts in no personalized work to make the spirit move on at their own pace and in their own time- it comes off as a forceful ending of postmortem consciousness. Warrior dreams work a bit differently, as despite the ability to instantly start the fight, all warrior dreams take the challenge willingly. In more broad terms, the player has to work to resolve their issues that take the form of a duel, compared to lingering spirits that simply fade. And the tells? isolated locations, some form of grave or monument, and a certain idleness different than the non-combats waiting for a fight. How to tell what is going to happen with the nail? 3 step process. 1) is the nail hitting something physical (or implied physical on a different decoration layer)? If yes, they will survive the nail. 2) does the immediate area appear to be a valid arena for a fight, or does a conversation with the ghost ask you for a duel of some kind? if yes, the ghost will put up a fight after getting poked. 3) has every other step been a no? If yes, the nail will erase the character from the game without hesitation. The short version is "if they ask for a fight, it will be a fight. if not, and 'is ghost' is true, the npc will only take a single hit.
It's funny that Carl plays so safe, yet the Speedrun actually has instances of dying, intentionally, to use your Shade to skip parts of the game via pogo. Dying is optimal, some times!
Late to the party, but yeah, when I first met Deepnest I noped right out of there as well. Also, damn, Carl is a gamer. Second-try Mantis Lords... took me 3 or 4 tries to get the first phase down, and then another 2 until I was done with it.
I'm very surprised on how similar this first playthrough has been to mine. Missing the Mantis Village, finding Mato first, then the Upward spell before visiting the graveyard. It's been very very similar... Minus the death count!
You can actually get it before killing False Knight. If you really wanted to, you can even get to the Dream Nail, grab the Dreamshield from Resting Grounds and, with frame perfect timing, kill the Elder Baldur in front of Greenpath using the shield.
If you're wondering what the backseater was trying to get Carl see with Myla (Full game spoilers)... There's very conditional Dream Nail dialogue of The Radiance trying to get Myla to kill The Knight. To get this, you need to have beaten the Soul Master and gotten the Dream Nail without having gotten the Crystal Heart (as acquiring that will trigger the state Carl found her in where she's fully infected and starts attacking you).

I find it funny that he took 8 hours to break the geo rock right next to the well entrance, just because he never dropped down there. And when he finally did he assumed it respawned because there's no way he could've walked past it 50 times without checking, right?
Carl being both good and ridiculously over-cautious early on is finally coming back to bite him a bit… the game design expects that a new player would die a few or several times early on, and so would teach you about saving at every bench and the mechanics of fighting your shade. As well as things like upgrading your weapon before going into areas where even the smallest enemies take so many hits to kill.
just realised carls tediously obsessive checking and double backing is conditioning to compensate for his poor intuition and general blindness... this coupled with his adhd and extreme caution (despite being clearly dominant when it comes to fights) has made for a rather chaotic and drawn out run where large chunks of bonus bits are seen long before significant main story development
anyone else notice some rando in chat spoiling the overcharm mechanic? and then immediately (on the next bench) carl tries it and it works. rip one potentially cool discovery i guess
I gotta say Mantis Lords are still... well, not my *favorite* fight, that goes to (a spoiler if someone hasn't made it far enough) but definitely top 2 or 3, it's incredibly well-designed and satisfying to learn (By the way the spoiler boss in question is . . Nightmare King Grimm, just takes everything you've learned and puts it up to 11, and with a banger soundtrack too)
Soul catcher gives you only 2 more soul per hit, and you need 33 to heal or to cast a spell (you normally get 11 per hit and you have a maximum of 99) so the boss fight needs to be really long for it to matter 3:30:30 It looked like that was a breakable wall, but I replayed the scene and now I'm not sure
Carl's good at the game, but intentionally dodging signs pointing to benches and specifically not getting the Stag Station map pins makes me feel weirdly uncomfortable.
I ran out of money to pay editors, so now I edit everything myself. I'm focusing on terraria right now, but I could do subnautica after that. QOL? Your Dream Nail also charges you a little soul when you hit enemies, even the invulnerable ones. The Seer told you. You already doing the "Peering into the minds" you can do with live bugs, but it also works on corpses and some monuments.
Quality of life tips: Dream nailing is just for NPCs and objects with dream circles around it, so no need for dream nailing walls and static stuff (there are very very few exceptions afaik). Dreamnailing ghosts is bad but now you know 😅
the mods seem kinda overzealous about removing stuff that isn't spoilers, such as the fact that the area in resting grounds is a graveyard, when the seer literally mentions graves with regards to the dream nail
I appreciate them so much, so many playthroughs are spoilt by having too much spelled out that I have no qualms about seeing slightly too much removed. Mods don't all know the game; they just try to stomp out unwanted backseating/guidance...it's not feasible to be perfectly accurate without perfect game knowledge really.
You probably already streamed more, but in case you didn't, you missed a couple signs in the city to a place you skipped by accident. Might want to go back and take a look.
Sorry I just cannot watch a 5h long video... Not even on X2 speed 😢 Hook me up when there is another subnautica episode 1-2hrs long ideally. Still thank you for uploading and much love, Carl.
@@purplejay8030 it is not a matter of pausing the 1 hrs video usually take up to 2-3 weeks for me to finish with the little time I have for watching. By the end of 5hrs I would not be able to follow up the pace of the next videos any more...

WOW you skipped a lot of the game. You were supposed to fight the mantis lords immediately after getting the double jump, then another different area, and THEN crystal peak/resting grounds. Glad you realized what you missed. Also it's insane how you almost beat the mantis lords on your first try
That's . . . not how the game works, really. It's an open world adventure; some areas are harder than others but there's no "intended order" like that. Did you play with a guide or something? I rarely see 2 playthroughs that follow the same path. There is no "correct path" especially once you have the mantis claws. Quirrel even recommends that you explore more before ML once you've met them once if you don't immediately beat them.
@@peterpeladon Oh, whoops, I totally forgot to write a part of the thing I was trying to say -_- It was meant to be a joke about how my playthrough was wildly different than his, but that’s by design of how the game works

Not even on X2 speed 😢
Hook me up when there is another subnautica episode 1-2hrs long ideally.
Still thank you for uploading and much love, Carl.
May I introduce you to the pause button?
Watch it in chunks! Then it's like it's 3 separate 1.5 hour videos :)
@@purplejay8030 it is not a matter of pausing the 1 hrs video usually take up to 2-3 weeks for me to finish with the little time I have for watching.
By the end of 5hrs I would not be able to follow up the pace of the next videos any more...
@@MaidenOfAir no it is not
I have like 5-15 minutes before I go to bed so even the 1h video is a multiple day task...
It's okay though, I just stick to the videos I am able to watch in a reasonable amount of time.
@@overlordalfredo You can scrub through the videos and skip parts until you get to something you think is worth watching 🤷♀
@@peterpeladon Oh, whoops, I totally forgot to write a part of the thing I was trying to say -_-
It was meant to be a joke about how my playthrough was wildly different than his, but that’s by design of how the game works
