    Here's a quick fix for annoying laptop fan noises.
    Now of course, cleaning the fans from time to time will help as well but that requires opening your laptop.
    For most people this does the trick but for very dusty fans you would have to get them cleaned out at some point.

    I noticed nobody is talking about this and I know this is a 3yo video but I found out that, at least for me, there is no option for “system cooling policy”. I only have Minimum processor state and Maximum processor state and nothing in between. Do you know what could be wrong? Thanks.

    Oh man. I'm an experienced IT repair technician and I've done everything from redoing the thermal paste, blowing out the fans, adding cooling pads, adding extra rubber pieces on the corners to increase airflow underneath, and adding extra exhaust intake/exhaust ports in a desperate attempt to finally get my Dell Inspiron to shut up to no avail. I've known where those settings are for many, many years and never thought to adjust them. Watched your 3 minute video followed by some mouse clicks and I can hear everything BUT my personal laptop. I vote your solution as "Solution of the Year". Thank you for this. I can now sleep peacefully again. Not today, Windows and Dell. Not today.

      Just remember that slower fan speeds affect temperature inside the components. Be careful.

    • @techcontrolofficial
      @techcontrolofficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      At 98% CPU usage and fans set to passive, there is no negative impact. The only components that are involved in this case are the heatsink, fans amd CPU. If you are overclocking and maxing out your components with 3rd part software, that's when it can become a concern. Additionally, even when you attempt to make certain changes that are unsafe, the computer chips are designed to power off to minimize the damage.

  • @trickstarjimmy

    Here was the solution to my HP x360 fan noise issue. Everyone is talking about the fan speeds, but the fan should be virtually silent during use. You shouldn't even know that it's on at low speed.
    Follow me here... You laptop chassis has flex. It's built to have a certain amount of flex. It's designed into the unit. The fan is inside of an enclosure. Sure, it might be dirty... but, more than likely, the metal plates and case of the fan enclosure is slightly bent, causing the fan blades to contact the enclosure. First, clean it out thoroughly. Take the fan enclosure apart. Careful not to lose the little screws. Take the fan blades out and clean them...REALLY clean them, with a clean, dry toothbrush, or something of the sort. Clean out ALL AREAS around the fan location. We're cleaning for two reasons. To make sure that no dirt or dust get into the fan, AND to make sure that no buildup is pushing against the fan enclosure in any way. Put the flat enclosure pieces on a flat glass table, and look to see if it's completely flat. Reassemble the fan and the enclosure, and plug it into the motherboard. Move the fan around and in different directions. See if you can detect the noise any longer. The fan should be running, but completely silent. No matter what the speed is. If you still hear the fan, that means that you're going to have to go back into the enclosure and do some bending and adjusting of the enclosure. Run the fan without the enclosure cover to see if it makes any noise. If it's silent, then the contact of the fan blades is probably occurring with the cover. Press it out gently with your fingers, and visibly inspect where it might be rubbing. Observe the fan's ability to spin freely throughout the process. Plug it into the motherboard before reassembling, and turn the computer on. Observe the fan and listen to the noise level. Once you've bent it to the right position, there should be no noise.
    Now, you may want to remove any stickers and labels on the outside of the fan enclosure. The thickness of that sticker might be the difference between it being pressed out of shape again. This also might be a good time to reapply fresh thermal grease/paste to the cpu and heat sink. I removed several pieces of tape and some labels on the fan enclosure. Carefully route the wires and cables around the enclosure back into their correct places.
    Reassemble, checking for noise at every step of the way.
    My laptop is now still cycling and the fan comes on, but you just can't hear it, because of the rubbing issue. The bios and programming wasn't the problem. It was the enclosure being slightly bent.
    Hope this helps, I'll post it here and elsewhere.

    Even just dropping my max processor state to 99% from 100 downclocks my CPU (i5 10500H) to 2.4ghz from 4.2ghz . In the garage of GTA I went from 90fps average to 62 average 😭. Although the quiet laptop is nice while gaming I don't like the huge hit to performance.

    • @Matendu
      @Matendu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ive used Dell Power Manager and used the "quiet" thermal manager preset and it helps a lot. It's supposed to lower processor and fan speed, essentially performace, I still get the same ammount of fps in my games like FIFA and GTA. But when I run benchmarks like Heaven and 3DMark my fps is lower on heaven and my score on 3DMark is lower? Im so confused lol

      One thing I have learned over the years to watch out for is the laptop hinge design. I remember in 2015 I owned an HP laptop and after 8 months of usage one if the hinges popped out. Same with an acer V5 touch screen laptop a few years back, which over time the hinge broke and every time I opened or closed the lid it would pop up so I would manually press it back down to open/close the lid. Until of course one day I closed the lid too fast (or being careless) and the hinge stabbed the screen and the touch screen broke but the LCD was still usable. Which I ended up replacing with a surface pro 5 and an Acer FX 505 gaming laptop. So far so good on both machines

    Thank you very much for your tutorials, they save people a LOT of $$$ in repair fees! However, I did exactly what you showed us to do in order to quite our fans, but sadly, I didn't have the great success like the others below, mine is just as noisy. 😢
    I know that you didn't say to, but do I need to restart my laptop or do you think that I just might need a new fan?
    Thank you again,

    • @techcontrolofficial

      Hey thanks for the positive feedback! You can try a restart and of that doesn't do the trick then you may have to physically clean the fans out. And if that doesn't fix the issue then you would look for new fans.

    This video is quite old, but in case anyone stumbles across this comment, make sure all your drivers are up to date. Not sure if this is the correct explanation, but I guess your fans could get more power than they are supposed to and start vibrating, making a weird loud noise. After I updated my graphics card driver my fans worked properly and the noise stopped, still having quite healthy temperatures.

    • @techcontrolofficial
      @techcontrolofficial  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s one element due to the GPU drivers but the actual settings mentioned in the video can reduce the fan noise altogether. The settings will be applicable for a while with the windows infrastructure and settings, hence the fix still works until today.
