I feel like you're missing the the more obvious answer to why Goku didn't use it against Cell. Cell would have recognized what he was doing and stopped him before it got anywhere near powerful enough to use.
Here's the thing: would he really know about the Spirit Bomb? Yes, we know that Dr. Gero spied on them during the fight, however the Spirit Bomb was used towards the end of the fight and the spybot was destroyed at some point during the battle. I'd say that there's a fair chance that Dr. Gero and therefore Cell didn't know about the move because they never witnessed it being used. Honestly, a number of things about Cell bug me, but that's another matter entirely.

The Danish dub of Dragon Ball Z actually used the japanese terms and names for most attacks and characters. Goku was Son Goku, Krillin was Kuririn, Master Roshi was Kame-senin and a spirit bomb was a Genkidama. Hell, yamcha was Yamchu and Saiyans were saiyajins.

While in his perfect form he could power up like anyone else by charging his ki, and after coming back as "Super Perfect Cell", he was just essentially powered up due to his saiyan zenkai boost. There's not really a reason he couldn't have used it, other than the fact that if he used kaio-ken in the beam struggle against Gohan, then Cell might have won.
I get the feeling the Spirit Bomb will be used in Super at some point, maybe during the Universal Tournament, hell it might not even be used by Goku, maybe one of those Justice warrior guys will use it, they(or at least Toppo) seem to be buddy buddy with the Supreme Kai, maybe they were taught that by him or something. It would be an interesting way for them to see that Goku isn't pure evil, since it only works on impurity and such. You are pulling way to much meaning out of the name 元気玉. 元気 how is used in Japanese is basically talking about energy or health, 玉 is simply ball, so the closest translation is energy ball. As you state yourself meaning times the author likes to take shortcuts and so he just named the ball of energy, energy ball.
I do like the name "Spirit Bomb" a lot, since it combines grace and potency. However, as you have said (or at least implied), it isn't necessarily the best name for something so important. I am usually good at coming up with names, but am a loss for this one, lol. Keep up the good work.

I think the whole point of Goku going Blue there was to show Krillin that a lot of the tournament fighters would be on a completely different level. Notice how Krillin starts shaking straight away? That's a really long winded way of translating what pretty much amounts to "Vigor Ball". I mean, that's like taking the root etymologies of spirit and bomb and making a sentence out of them. I can't imagine Toriyama went so deep with the name. Genki just describes one's mood or vitality. Spirit if you will. Dama AKA Tama means ball. It's a ball of vitality. Pretty straightforward.
Ever since I read up on the Genki Dama, I felt that Goku's mastery over the technique greatly explained his character. It's not simply the purity of his heart; Chi-Chi could ride Kintoun as well, but a pure heart does not equal a heart without attachment. Whenever I look at Goku, I see a man without worldly attachment. Even his lackluster relationship with his own wife seems to inform this mindset. Sure, he has friends, and possessions, and will do his job as a family man if called upon, but even if large changes occur to Goku's everyday life it would likely not affect him spiritually at all. At the end of DBZ, we learn that he's been living in the boonies with his family for seven years without ever visiting Bulma. It is this complete detachment from mortal attachments I feel, that makes Goku the only person capable of invoking the Genki Dama.
It is quite interesting in the fact that the Genki Dama appears when everyone is rooting Trunks on. Like the ball itself is the manifestation of the hope of the planet or they somehow unconsciously created it with Trunks' desire to protect everyone. It seems that asking permission is requires, as Trunks asks to use the energy. Maybe the energy cannot be taken, only given. And like Goku, the energies get absorbed in Super Saiyan form. Zamasu also makes a point of telling us he can feel all different energies in the sword as it stabs him. It means the energy gathers remains unique in the ball. And maybe that is why it is so strong. It is not just all energy balled up, it is everyone's energy and strength flowing together in a flowing current that keeps the spherical shape in a continuous motion.
Actually, Bomb does make sense too, because last time I checked, it did not only explode, but also left quite a huge crater where it hit. The Genkidama actually is a destructive force. Goku even refused to throw it when Kid Buu used Vegeta as a shield. Gohan was able to bounce it back, but Kid Buu, a pure evil being was able to do the same. And the Genkidama is not so much an "Anti-Evil" technique either, since Freeza and Vegeta were able to survive it. So to me the Genkidama doesn't seem much more than just a very powerful energy ball.
I think the Spirit Sword was made possible due to Trunks learning to use the Mafuda, which works on a similar principle to the Genki Dama, they even start from the same stance.
I felt that Trunks' "Spirit Sword" was more of a "reverse spirit bomb". Goku asks for the energy. Trunks DIDN'T ask; the beings of Earth willingly gave their energy without him asking.
I am brazilian and in the local dub they didnt translate much of the names. I grew up hearing Genki Dama, Kienzan, Masenko and even Piccolo's Makankōsappō! Imagine yourself hearing Kamehameha as turtle beam or something, that's my reaction with the english dub

This all explains why Jiren was unaffected by it too, MasakoX. One, no one knows if Jiren is definitely a bad guy. Sure, he and Goku are fighting, but they're in a tournament where the losers get erased. Jiren might be the hero of Universe 11, or maybe he also knows the Genki Dama (which would be awesome by the way). During the current arc (late 2017), only around ten people were there to offer energy for the Genki Dama. The tournament is taking place in the world of void, which means there's nowhere for Goku to get anymore from, and the rest of the tournament's participants would offer any aid to him. Also, for a localization, I think Spiritual World Attack would be a pretty good name.
An interesting trivia of sorts, the Genki Dama is basically the "light side" equivalent of the Shun Goku Satsu when you think about it. I always thought it would be cool to have a dream match between Goku and Gouki/Akuma, which ends with Gouki using the Shun Goku Satsu against Goku while Goku is revving up a Genki Dama, then Gouki is posing while Goku is on the ground, but because the Shun Goku Satsu actually didn't do much to Goku, the Genki Dama is still intact enough to drop onto the unsuspecting Gouki and subdue him. The best thing, though? It then purifies Gouki and ultimately helps him redeem himself from the depths of the dark path he would otherwise never have been able to escape. Of all the little crossover "what if" fan stories, I think this could potentially make for one of the most interesting ones. It wouldn't be too difficult to put Gouki on the level of some version of Goku, especially if you throw in the Orochi powers that Gouki adapts in some of the Vs. SNK storylines. I even have a followup idea where the Satsui no Hadou expelled from Gouki eventually finds its way to Ryu, and the reformed Gouki and Goku team up to fight the powered up Evil Ryu, only to find that Ryu had fought Vegeta shortly after turning evil, and the influence of the Satsui no Hadou (and Orochi, possibly) put Vegeta back into a "Majin Vegeta" state. That way we get an ultimate dream match of Goku against Ryu and Gouki against Vegeta. I wish some creators like the Death Battle team would branch out and put their amazing resources toward doing something like this. :I
Hypothetically, if the Genki Dama is made of pure, good energy wouldn't it be prudent to say that if it met with a pure, evil force or power, the two would simply nullify each other. If so, that could be why it didn't work on Freeza. Freeza is, aside from Kid Buu, the single most evil creature in Universe 7. However, though he was injured by it, since he wasn't pure evil, again like Kid Buu, it wouldn't have destroyed him. In this instance, the Genki Dama is actually a very niche weapon that could only be effective in the most extreme circumstances.
Oooh, I have an alternate name idea. Harmonic Convergence would be a fantastic name for this. It symbolizes it being energy from many smaller sources coming together. The name also refers to the event of the same name, which is when the planets (you know, _heavenly_ bodies) in our solar system are aligned, the earth being one of them. Also it sounds nice and dramatic.

I think Spirit Bomb is actually a very fitting name for it. The "Spirit" part automatically brings to mind something good, that spirit is a positive trait that all living beings possess and that its collective mass would be able to purge evil and leave good unharmed. The "Bomb" part comes from the fact that it does explode when it hits its target.
I thought "Dama" was known as "Bomb" in Japanese, pretty much like how the Bijuu-dama are known as the Tailed Beast Bombs in Naruto. The Danish dub of Dragon Ball Z actually used the japanese terms and names for most attacks and characters. Goku was Son Goku, Krillin was Kuririn, Master Roshi was Kame-senin and a spirit bomb was a Genkidama. Hell, yamcha was Yamchu and Saiyans were saiyajins.

While in his perfect form he could power up like anyone else by charging his ki, and after coming back as "Super Perfect Cell", he was just essentially powered up due to his saiyan zenkai boost. There's not really a reason he couldn't have used it, other than the fact that if he used kaio-ken in the beam struggle against Gohan, then Cell might have won.
Ginger Daikaiju Cell didn't use it as he was toying with Gohan. He let his guard down before Goku did in the tournament.
Also Kaio ken is a risky move for even Goku to pull off. Knowing the move and executing it are two diffrent things.

I get the feeling the Spirit Bomb will be used in Super at some point, maybe during the Universal Tournament, hell it might not even be used by Goku, maybe one of those Justice warrior guys will use it, they(or at least Toppo) seem to be buddy buddy with the Supreme Kai, maybe they were taught that by him or something. It would be an interesting way for them to see that Goku isn't pure evil, since it only works on impurity and such. Just a thought, it probably won't happen, or maybe people will see Goku using the Ganki Dama and realize he's not Evil then or something Idunno...

You are pulling way to much meaning out of the name 元気玉. 元気 how is used in Japanese is basically talking about energy or health, 玉 is simply ball, so the closest translation is energy ball. As you state yourself meaning times the author likes to take shortcuts and so he just named the ball of energy, energy ball.

I think the whole point of Goku going Blue there was to show Krillin that a lot of the tournament fighters would be on a completely different level. Notice how Krillin starts shaking straight away? Pretty sure that's what Goku was getting at. It also goes without saying Goku was holding back, really.

I mean, that's like taking the root etymologies of spirit and bomb and making a sentence out of them. I can't imagine Toriyama went so deep with the name.
Genki just describes one's mood or vitality. Spirit if you will. Dama AKA Tama means ball. It's a ball of vitality. Pretty straightforward.

Ever since I read up on the Genki Dama, I felt that Goku's mastery over the technique greatly explained his character. It's not simply the purity of his heart; Chi-Chi could ride Kintoun as well, but a pure heart does not equal a heart without attachment.
Whenever I look at Goku, I see a man without worldly attachment. Even his lackluster relationship with his own wife seems to inform this mindset. Sure, he has friends, and possessions, and will do his job as a family man if called upon, but even if large changes occur to Goku's everyday life it would likely not affect him spiritually at all. At the end of DBZ, we learn that he's been living in the boonies with his family for seven years without ever visiting Bulma. It is this complete detachment from mortal attachments I feel, that makes Goku the only person capable of invoking the Genki Dama.

I have to say I always loved the sound of "The Spirit Bomb" better.
It is quite interesting in the fact that the Genki Dama appears when everyone is rooting Trunks on. Like the ball itself is the manifestation of the hope of the planet or they somehow unconsciously created it with Trunks' desire to protect everyone. It seems that asking permission is requires, as Trunks asks to use the energy. Maybe the energy cannot be taken, only given. And like Goku, the energies get absorbed in Super Saiyan form. Zamasu also makes a point of telling us he can feel all different energies in the sword as it stabs him. It means the energy gathers remains unique in the ball. And maybe that is why it is so strong. It is not just all energy balled up, it is everyone's energy and strength flowing together in a flowing current that keeps the spherical shape in a continuous motion.
I think the Dao of Dragon Ball translation you quoted is very elegant.
Actually, Bomb does make sense too, because last time I checked, it did not only explode, but also left quite a huge crater where it hit. The Genkidama actually is a destructive force. Goku even refused to throw it when Kid Buu used Vegeta as a shield. Gohan was able to bounce it back, but Kid Buu, a pure evil being was able to do the same. And the Genkidama is not so much an "Anti-Evil" technique either, since Freeza and Vegeta were able to survive it. So to me the Genkidama doesn't seem much more than just a very powerful energy ball.

I think the Spirit Sword was made possible due to Trunks learning to use the Mafuda, which works on a similar principle to the Genki Dama, they even start from the same stance.
I felt that Trunks' "Spirit Sword" was more of a "reverse spirit bomb". Goku asks for the energy. Trunks DIDN'T ask; the beings of Earth willingly gave their energy without him asking.
My ideal name for the Genki Dama would be something like 'Cleansing Light'

In Serbian dub it was called Ball of life or life ball.I think that is alright translation.Not the best but good.Because ki is the essence of life and essence this physical universe as a whole.
This all explains why Jiren was unaffected by it too, MasakoX. One, no one knows if Jiren is definitely a bad guy. Sure, he and Goku are fighting, but they're in a tournament where the losers get erased. Jiren might be the hero of Universe 11, or maybe he also knows the Genki Dama (which would be awesome by the way). During the current arc (late 2017), only around ten people were there to offer energy for the Genki Dama. The tournament is taking place in the world of void, which means there's nowhere for Goku to get anymore from, and the rest of the tournament's participants would offer any aid to him.
Also, for a localization, I think Spiritual World Attack would be a pretty good name.
An interesting trivia of sorts, the Genki Dama is basically the "light side" equivalent of the Shun Goku Satsu when you think about it.
I always thought it would be cool to have a dream match between Goku and Gouki/Akuma, which ends with Gouki using the Shun Goku Satsu against Goku while Goku is revving up a Genki Dama, then Gouki is posing while Goku is on the ground, but because the Shun Goku Satsu actually didn't do much to Goku, the Genki Dama is still intact enough to drop onto the unsuspecting Gouki and subdue him.
The best thing, though? It then purifies Gouki and ultimately helps him redeem himself from the depths of the dark path he would otherwise never have been able to escape. Of all the little crossover "what if" fan stories, I think this could potentially make for one of the most interesting ones. It wouldn't be too difficult to put Gouki on the level of some version of Goku, especially if you throw in the Orochi powers that Gouki adapts in some of the Vs. SNK storylines.
I even have a followup idea where the Satsui no Hadou expelled from Gouki eventually finds its way to Ryu, and the reformed Gouki and Goku team up to fight the powered up Evil Ryu, only to find that Ryu had fought Vegeta shortly after turning evil, and the influence of the Satsui no Hadou (and Orochi, possibly) put Vegeta back into a "Majin Vegeta" state. That way we get an ultimate dream match of Goku against Ryu and Gouki against Vegeta.
I wish some creators like the Death Battle team would branch out and put their amazing resources toward doing something like this. :I

Hypothetically, if the Genki Dama is made of pure, good energy wouldn't it be prudent to say that if it met with a pure, evil force or power, the two would simply nullify each other. If so, that could be why it didn't work on Freeza. Freeza is, aside from Kid Buu, the single most evil creature in Universe 7. However, though he was injured by it, since he wasn't pure evil, again like Kid Buu, it wouldn't have destroyed him. In this instance, the Genki Dama is actually a very niche weapon that could only be effective in the most extreme circumstances.
Oooh, I have an alternate name idea. Harmonic Convergence would be a fantastic name for this. It symbolizes it being energy from many smaller sources coming together. The name also refers to the event of the same name, which is when the planets (you know, _heavenly_ bodies) in our solar system are aligned, the earth being one of them.
Also it sounds nice and dramatic.
For those wondering about the jelly filled doughnut part. In the English dub of Pokémon Brock (?) said they were eating jelly filled doughnuts, even though you could see them eating onigiri, which is basically a traditional rice dish from Japan.
If you ever do another set of "what if" videos, one I think would be worth tackling would be alternate possibilities for the Android/Cell Saga. Namely, how they might have played out if Toriyama didn't have to keep changing up the villains as quickly as he did due to his editors?
My alternative names for Spirit Bomb/Genki Dama would be "Heavenly Sphere of Light", "Deamon Cleansing Sphere", " Ki Uni-Sphere" "All For One", " Fighting Spirit", and "Heavenly Cleansing Blade" (In Trunks' case)
I was playing Yu-Gi-Oh Legacy of the Duelist and the opponent used a Negate Attack just as you said about Cell having a way to negate the Spirit Bomb. It took me a minute to realign which aspect of reality is which in my head.
How about a kaioken explained vid? and a top ten techniques you would personally choose to have for yourself. And no transformations, that would be too easy to choose
Just putting it out there its not the only of its kind. In the game wild arms 2 a technique called "Impulse" basically functioned the same way. But not concentrating everyone's given power into a single sphere. Instead hurling a salvo of power spheres each time.

Honestly... I would love to see the move get expanded more. I liked what they did with Trunks and his "spirit sword" and thought it was a cool variation of the movie. It would be cool to see Goku find a way to use this to either find new ways to use it, or possibly see it be used for other purposes (like Goku did in Android 13's movie)

You forgot to mention that Goku can't use the Genki Dama as a Super Saiyan. Now, because Super Saiyan Blue is about focusing your energy inwards towards yourself rather than letting your anger and rage take and letting your energy fire out in all directions in an uncontrolled manner, he may be able to use it again just like he could use the Kaioken in the Super Saiyan Blue form.

I think Spirit Bomb is actually a very fitting name for it. The "Spirit" part automatically brings to mind something good, that spirit is a positive trait that all living beings possess and that its collective mass would be able to purge evil and leave good unharmed. The "Bomb" part comes from the fact that it does explode when it hits its target.
They should make a little series with Goten and Trunks with the flying nimbus fighting the dark nimbus. So people can be remembered again.

I thought "Dama" was known as "Bomb" in Japanese, pretty much like how the Bijuu-dama are known as the Tailed Beast Bombs in Naruto.
I also just wondered if the Supreme Kai had taught Future Trunks how to make the Spirit Sword before they had to fight Babidi and prevent Majin Buu from being released.
Potential Spirit Bomb alternate names: Purifying Sun, Holy Judgement, Anti-evil Cascade, Righteous Light, God's Wrath, Plot Device, and my personal favorite United Soul Strike.
