My ranger is doing this too. The inboard cv joint housing actually will hit the frame. But like yours. it still functions fine. I am weighing my options.
Mine was exactly the same way from day 1......i have 2500 miles on it and its still the same. does make weird noise though . I did replace prop shaft and it has no play at all. the axles move more than that on mine. WAAAAY more.
You can buy all of the parts inside this Hilliard drive, but I think I am going to need a lot of the parts, so a complete unit for a quick change out is in order here. I will rebuild the old one in the off season.
I have a 2018 RZR 900 trail,1300 mls, same issue, cannot imagine why Polaris has not addressed this issue, as it is not just a random few. Quite frustrating.
Can Am Defender with less than 100 miles on it. Passenger splined end inside front diff flops around, seal hasn't failed yet. New shafts won't fix it, and a replacement differential would likely have the same defect. The only fix I've come across is someone paying a machinist to bore the carrier out to accept an interference bushing that ensured any stock shaft was supported.
Bearing and seal kit at royal distributing is about $60. Id be trying that first for sure. Its not a very big job. (at least not on a sportsman) Ive not done a rzr, but you have to pull the diff either way.
My best guess is the center carrier bearing on the driveshaft. Pull the center console and give the driveshaft a good up and down shake. You'll know if it's bad.
If you have a fair amount of slop, then I would suspect the (relatively) soft splines on the axles are just worn. It doesn't take much to make them look and feel really bad. If it's not leaking any oil, then just get out there and ride!
@@ryanerickson6457 Yes, it was allowing dirt and water into the case, emulsifying the water and oil into a nice coffee with creamer color. Can't really get into the case via the axle splines, but it can surely enter the input shaft area!
So as you said " I will rebuild the old one in the off season." Did you end up selling the ride or do the compleat rebuild? Maybe you have another video on the subject? Link?
I still have that 09 RZR, plus a few more now. I rebuilt it with new input shaft bearings and a seal, and put it on the shelf as a spare. We ride so much, I know I will use it it the future.
Do you know of any issues with the drive? The unit I'm looking at has a wind up and decelerate knocking...not big but annoying as hell. The dealer insisted it was normal but no other 800 ranger that I've seen or driven does it. It sounds like the rear...sometimes but others from the Transmission. Any Ideas as to what could have gone wrong would be appreciated.
+SilverRaven1959 These machines all have some funky noises coming from down under. Without hearing it, or knowing the previous history of the machine, it's hard to say what your problem is. Look at my video on Drive Shaft issues. I felt a lot of clunking and the noise was bad. A new DS took care of the problem. From 2010 on, you could buy yokes and U Joints. 2008 & 2009 required a complete new DS assembly.
I think the softer splines on the axle are what causes most of the slop. The splines in the cups of the differential are ultra hard, and should be OK. Every time I've installed new axles, the slop is reduced by at least 75%.
@@redrzr56 o.k. thanks. I've got a 2012 Ranger 800 I'm working on. Been ordering a lot of parts from a company on ebay called Caltric. I'm kinda new to side by sides by I've mechaniced on cars and trucks for years. Most of this stuff is simple but you don't see slack like that on a regular vehicle unless something is bad worn. Do you know anything about Caltric parts?
Yep, the splines on the Axles (or driveshafts for farm machinery) just plain wear out. I've never seen splines wear down to the point that they begin to slip in the drive unit, because before that time arrives, you would have investigated and replaced whatever shaft was worn so bad. It is what it is, and it's just part of the game in off road machines.
I ran across this after a search for play in axles. I just replaced my left rear axle on my 2004 Polaris Sportsman 500 with an axle from East Lake Axle, What concerns me is that once installed, it had this much play in it, although when I install the original Polaris axle back in, there is zero play. Same in the other three corners. Is this a case of poor aftermarket fitment, or is this somehow 'acceptable' for a new part? Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers.
Sad to say, but many (Not All) aftermarket axles are being made with tooling that is worn out! If the machining specs are out just .001, multiply that by 28 spines on an axle and you now have .028 worth of "slop" on day one. It's not the end of the world, but it certainly doesn't seem worth the efforts to replace an axle and ride another 1500 miles with no worries. Unless you are riding in remote wilderness areas far from camp, I'd just go ahead an use the new axle you bought. And carry a tow strap. LOL
Yeah, I hear ya. I've been in contact with East Lake Axle, who have been very responsive even over the July 4 holiday weekend. They also offered to warranty the axle and replace it with a new one (the inner boot seal was leaking grease too following first test ride), which I opted to do. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks for the response.
I wouldn't worry about it. They all develop a little bit of play after just 2-300 miles of riding. They all seem to get fairly sloppy after 1500 miles, but they just get to a point where they are "well worn in" and don't seem to get any worse after that point. But it never hurts to keep a spare axle on hand.
stopped buying polaris because of these ridiculous things! i have had 4 machines with same things worn out at less than 1000 miles on them, alot of money to pay for a machine thats virtually all worn out at about 6 or 7000 miles, i have switched to cfmoto z force 800 ex, 1500 miles, only a drive shaft steady bearing so far. not babied!

Loved your video. We have the Polaris RZR XP 1000 and Wildcat X ATV's and we appreciate them, they are tough and hold up well on our tour.

mine is the same way and it's almost brand new are you suppost have slop in them like that I'm gonna go look at a new one tom
Like your vids and the information, Thanks and keep them coming.
I realize it's pretty off topic but do anybody know of a good site to stream newly released movies online?
@Matthew Isaias I watch on FlixZone. You can find it on google :)
@Matthew Isaias lately I have been using FlixZone. Just search on google for it :)
I've noticed I've got the same play on my 2014 RZR 800 1600 miles.
Honestly, after 12K miles on the 2 machines I own, I've never had a failure. Just drive it and turn up the music.
Great video.
2018 RZR 1000xp I’m getting a intermittent vibration and the vibration is pretty bad until I slow dow to almost a stop then it goes away. Any ideas?

Mine has the same amount play buy there is no knocking or leakage what would I replace
Is your play at the rear of the diff, the Input Bearing side? Or is your play on the axle side, where the axles plug into the diff?
@@redrzr56 were the axle go into my diff
