Thanks for the video. I have a roof top deck railing with no load. The 4x4s were nailed into the floor frame before the floor was laid. I can not access them besides breaking off and digging out some of the wood. When I removed the posts, I have a similar 2 inch deep hole (like the holes you filled) and I am trying to figure out how to nail a bracket inside that hole will attach to the 4x4. Any ideas?
Hope i undestand. Top post has a plate that comes with the post. Decorate trim square at top is purchased separately in vinyl dept of box store

Does code require any anchoring at least at the top? I think I would be nervous with both top and bottom not anchored especially with a railing going up and the possibility of someone leaning against it
We replaced our old rotten wood posts on our front porch with pvc posts. How can we secure these posts to the front porch ceiling and roof?
Hello. Very nice video. You are a great teacher! I have to do this exact project and this was excellent. I have a question about the metal clad repair. I have no idea where to begin with patching that. Could you possibly explain how to patch the ugly voids in the top porch area?
Typically you have to reclad with metal. You will need an aluminum bending break
How do you attach the posts? I didn't see any connection top or bottom?
I'm curious as to why the old posts were cut in half when the nails could have been cut, keeping the old posts intact. The old posts did not appear to have suffered much, but for bottoms, which could have been cut. Such old posts would sell as architectural salvage for more than the new ones cost.

upper and lower mount cleat comes with the unit, this one is actually imbedded into the pad, replacing the old

Thank you so much for your help! Can you please tell me what to do if all of the old posts are different measurements? Do I cut my new vinyl posts all in one same measurement, or do I cut each new post to match the measurement of the old post that it is replacing? The old posts are 92.7, 93.7 etc. So, about an inch difference overall. Also, what kind of lift can I get that is the cheapest but will be the right kind for the job? Thank you for helping me.
Without being there to see? U would say individually replace with different sizes and replicate what is there. Unless you have the skill and knowledge to determine why they're different being the porch concrete wood decking for overhead roof out of level we're sagged there's no real way to tell without being there. So it would be fair to say to replace them individually size for size. Don't open another can of worms

I have 6 posts to replace on my porch do I have to jack the whole porch at once or can do them one at a time?

Great video, Sir, but have one question: What did you use to fill in the hole at the top of the post with, after you removed the post? You used vinyl patch mortar to fill in bottom holes. Also what is the name of the tin or vinyl material that surrounds the top of the post? Thank you in advance for your time and effort.

He would have to put on a new wrap or patch it with a smaller piece of coil stock. I would bend a new piece that would cover both holes with that one piece. Of course, you would have to remove both center pillars at the same time and your length would be limited by the distance between your jacks. Two things that I do differently is I use a bottle jack, with no wheels. and I like to attach my jack post at the top with a Simpson Tie. Kind of like a joist hanger, but is 3 1/" x 3 1/2 ".
Great video, I have these post you put in, but know brackets, the guy I bought them from lost the installation brackets. where can I get brackets. I didn't think it would be that hard but haven't located any yet.Your new.

Depends on your DIY experience. It is definitely possible to do some damage or get seriously hurt.
What if the post has two brackets on either side? Can I just put the temporary support post on the side of the bracket, or do I have to remove brackets first and then put the support post closer to the existing post?
You should br able to next to with the support post. The outward beam should be solid continuous all the way across the front of the porch so you should be able to support it within 6 in of any post with no problems

The posts have probably 12 inches of bracket, so I will have to put my temporary support post 12 inches out from main post, I also noticed that each post is a different measurement. There is an inch difference between them. I guess I measure and cut each post to be the length that the existing post is?
I only have one post on my porch and I need to replace it. Do I have to cut both ends or can I just cut the bottom to the finished length?
No it depend on the alignment of the railing, these were cut at both end because the overhead header support above the post is low. You have to do the math to match what is existing.
I have to cut 6" off the post. Now I won't be able to install the metal piece to the post . Is it ok for the foam to sit on the concrete?
William Catalano Since you only have one, try to maintain about 33-36" in lower stock befor the turned portion. You don't want the top too short or the bottom too long, use you visual guidlines, pencil a proposed cut, top bottom or both, the look at if it look odd to you change your cut measurements., really hard to answer, but if no railing is involved im sure you wont go wrong here
Why is it when I use the sawzall, it doesn't cut straight like yours?
Nothing short of just years of experience with the tool. Predicted don't be too hard on yourself you can always clean it up

I have a dumb question about the jack: How do you gently lower the jack since it's hydraulic and once you turn that arm clockwise (or counter) to lower it, you really have no control of how fast it comes down. This is the only scary part of the project for me and why I haven't attempted it yet.
+roymazz you do, you just twist slowly. It won't come crashing down, it'll ease it down. Never done it with a pump jack before, but I've done it with a bottle jack which raises and lowers pretty much the same way
Top of the post, are there any screws that holds it in. Or just the weight?
I add 4 3"screws then slide the square trim up an over the screws.....they provide a cheap plate to mount.....about the quality of a soup can. '#!$!#!

What would one expect to pay a handyman/professional to replace a pair of posts/columns.
Well you would have to determine that based on what it would take to remove the post what's being replaced and what type of time is involved in picking up material and completing your task. Good rule of thumb would be to make sure you're paid for your time picking up material performing the work and clean up if you're not sure how to estimate you can range hourly. In my area of New Jersey first hour is a minimum 110 with 55 per hour after this includes pickup. No set rates you need to find out what's competitive in your area
you dont even secure them? just the weight of the roof is the only thing holding them in place?
sure do lower bases two outer post are inlaided into pad 2 inches. the Enter to post at the base having a concrete epoxy seal put against the post to the concrete before the sieve cover gets pulled down. All for upper post I've pilot hole drilled 3 inch 10 penny finish nails one on each side then the sleeve slides up and get the poxy to the top .
you can attach the cleat directly into the header beam then you then then you can push the post up into the cleat then you have to jack the roof an extra 3/8 inch for that extra height. different schools of thought but always some type of fastening
+Vincent Dramis Did you end up putting a skirt on the bottoms of the posts? Less fill in work XD. Also do you have to worry about jacking the roof up with a jack on wheels? I've done it before but only with a bottle jack. I'd be worried the slightest shift in the plumbness of that support would cause it to go flying and the roof to come down.
+GrayXIII You can put shims between the wheels and the side of the jack, causing them to remain steady.
I don't see that you secured the post at the top and bottom.
Post bottom locks into existing poored concrete deck. Cement top was poured around the old wood porch post base which advances the water rot at the base. Top is secured using 3.5" coated screws, pilot hole at 45 degree into the header above then covered by the above decorative trim. Better secure then manufacturers cheap aluminum top plate mount. (Not shown).

For this install. Bottom has. Epoxy added to 1 inch square recess in concrete pad. Top secured with 4 3.5" coated deck style screws hidden by decorative trim added after completion. Fastening clip that comes with post are not reliable. Remember steel post insert....so work set screws around them
Thanks for reply and info about that. I plan on installing exactly the same posts and was hoping to fasten/anchor more securely.
Was not / am Not certain that screws would hold well due to foam internal makeup surrounding aluminum pole center. Also, not have the base actually recessed for anchor (the way the original one in the video) seemed insecure.

@@ronpatton5721 thats the only drawback with this product. Not much achor strength and hurricane or gale winds could cause roof lift issues. Depending on where you reside. I found this to be an issue as well

I agree with you that the post needs to be attached. I have to replace a wooded one with the same column that he installed but can’t figure out how to attach the column with the existing structure. If you solved this problem please let me know how, thanks!
