Easily the best tutorial DIY video I’ve seen. From showing what tools you used to explaining something as simple as saying you’re putting hand on temp post as you jack the porch roof up.
I’m installing columns on a rental I was brainstorming about the top support I’m glad I found your video it’s fairly simple I need a jack & a laser great video.
Thanks for posting. This will definitely help me redo my posts. I like the bracket on the bottom because it keeps the post off of the ground and will let water run off. Thanks again.
I had to take a double take at the thumbnail to make sure that this was a recent video. Good to see Your back making videos! Fantastic job on installing the porch columns. I like how your work is always precise to perfection. 👏🏾
You are the man, just the video i was looking for. Going to attempt 7 replacement posts and your video is really helpful. Very thorough and excited to get started. Thanks Ron!
Just the video I was looking for, I have to replace 4 post. this issue with the trim at the top being 4x4 and the post being 6x6 is exactly what I was running into.
Ron, you’re very skilled & Thank U, for that Toe Screw Method, because the Lord knows that I’ve skimped 💃on the Kreg Jig & have Spitt some Wood in my day! 😂… but, I still got the Job DONE! 🤗😘🙌 Tell my Sis., that I said Hellou! God Bless!
Great job. Good tool and material display was useful. Just 3 suggestions: if you want it to look flush at the top, use a Kreg jig and wood fillers to fill the gaps that the toe screws left. You can seal the cut ends of the post with either oil based paint or even silicone caulking to resist/minimize rot. Also, blow out the hole in the post base anchor so there's nothing in the way of the anchor bolt to grab properly. Other than that, this should all work fine for a DIYer
Ron you are gifted I think you could do really good on mink rehab maybe show how to fixed those holes and how to do countertop and backsplash I think if you could do those three things you would have good content you did a great job
Hey Ron, nice job. Question, I'm looking to replace two posts that are holding up a patio overhang, I'm concerned that the old ones might be starting to rot at the bottom, they have been in there for 16 years. Do you think it would be ok to cut the old ones at the bottom flush with the patio and then put the new ones right on top of the old cut off piece that is still in the ground on the footing? Of course I would use some heavy duty brackets at the bottom bolted into the patio itself. Would the 4 inch thick patio be strong enough to support the overhang?
Hi Ron, You have mad skills, I bought a Roybi Airstrike brad nailer, so excited about a tool. By the way Roy JR is touching the ceiling so I am going to have to give him a hair cut. I hope I don't hurt him. lol 💪Abort. 😂😂
Bruh Ron!! Nice Job!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!! ???? Susta here would like to know what type paint to get for bathroom cabinets and how do you take the center broad off in front of the sink?
Valspar cabinet and furniture paint but be sure to prime first. Used Valspar bonding paint for the primer. Center is sometimes clipped on, stapled or glued. Watch the video on the tip out tray to see how I removed mines.
Question - I have porch with gable roof (12x16) with 10feet high from ground. Wondering if posts for porch should be exactly "under" the outer wall (parallel to house Wall) or can Gerd/beam (horizontal to support porch) can be placed "right under the outer wall - parallel to house" OR 1 foot inside (towards the house) with helical posts into ground ? Please let me know If I have been able to articulated my question properly for you to under stand precisely. Thank you in advance.
Awesome content! Quick question I was hoping to put up a post as a light support. How sturdy would that base be if it didn't have the support on top? It would only be a 4x4, probably 8 foot high. Thanks!
How are you sealing the concrete? If water gets in that whole you drilled it will freeze in winter and crack the brand new porch. Asking because I am in the same boat!
How much weight does the bottle jack have to be rated for if you're doing posts for a covered patio? A 4-ton is like $30 but a 50-ton one is like $900!
If this work was performed in a high-uplift zone, it will not pass inspection or last through a major storm. You must use threaded rod and strapping to connect the post to the beam for uplift prevention. Those screws will shear, allowing the roof to tear off.
Can I just cut a 4x4 on a slant and jam it in under the porch for support then install the new one. I don't have a jack to use. Will it work this way??
If you are replacing posts but it's settled and sank over the past 40 years. Am I fine to raise back to level? My carport has sank roughly 3 inches and it's time to replace the posts. Thank you.
He did not install and load path connectors for resistance to wind uplift so I assume he is not in a coastal zone, or any zone where you can experience thunderstorms, tornados, deragos, hurricanes or windstorms. Nice neat job but if its not designed to support the porch form positive, negative, and uplift loads that is not the right way to do it.
@@dariusgrimes4330 All I can say is that out of the 30+ years of building homes, I’ve never had one post to fail outside of normal wear and tear. I’ll look into the load path connectors but here in NC (Triad Region) and in IN (Midwest Region), this installation is typical. Do you have a Simpson Tie Part Number to reference?
I love that you showed all the tools you were using instead of assuming everyone would know. Extremely helpful video!
Right for us newbies who’s trying to learn
Easily the best tutorial DIY video I’ve seen. From showing what tools you used to explaining something as simple as saying you’re putting hand on temp post as you jack the porch roof up.
I was beating my brain on how to use that post base. Well, your tutorial was great! Thanks
I’m in construction but doubt myself sometimes. You broke it down to where I know what not to do. Thank you.
I’m installing columns on a rental I was brainstorming about the top support I’m glad I found your video it’s fairly simple I need a jack & a laser great video.
I'm a little puzzled by the laser, actually. I would think a plumb bob could do the job as well.
I like the way to walk the viewer through each of the steps.
10:05 most satisfying thing I've seen all day. Nicely done, sir.
Thank you sir. Have you thought about using a simpson tie for the top connection?
Nice clean job! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Nice video! I appreciate how you set the stage for tools needed and then went through your work step by step.

You did a nice Job Ron! Simple video not trying to make it too fancy or overly complex.
You are the man, just the video i was looking for. Going to attempt 7 replacement posts and your video is really helpful. Very thorough and excited to get started. Thanks Ron!
Ron, I appreciate what you did here - demystifying the process. Even I I don't DIY it - I at least understand the degree of difficulty here.
Just the video I was looking for, I have to replace 4 post. this issue with the trim at the top being 4x4 and the post being 6x6 is exactly what I was running into.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!!
The 6x6 columns look great and are symmetrical to the porch structure. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Welcome back Ron. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Really cool 😎
I have a post to install on my rental property I will definetly try this. Watch it a couple more times and will be watchin all your videos
Thanks so much for the sub!
Same here mine on the carport
Ron you are so very talented, I admire your incentive to do it yourself versus hiring out. My Father and brother were the same way. Great job 👍
💪🏾
The start of the video and you showed everything needed. Man instant subscribe and like.
Glad you're Back... Brother Ron, Always on Point...Detailed...❤
TFW!
Doing pretty much the same exact project on a overhang that sank on one end, so I need longer posts, so thanks for the visual!
Thanks for watching!
Nice! i needed this direction to start replacing my bowing beams.

Exactly what I was looking for. Excellent, detailed video!
Nice work!
In Florida at least, the top connection would need to be fully strapped to the beams, rather than just screws..

Thanks for the suggestion on content. I’ll be over there soon enough.
I’m going to try to do that myself thanks for your video

Well done sir; thank you!
Nice job 💪🏿
Great job Ron!
Thanks! 🤗
Phenomenal work!!!
Yez 👍🏽 nice work Ron as always.
What about applying some type of adhesive to the top of that post instead of having those toe screws showing?
Typically you cap over the bracket and screws like I showed at the end of the video but whatever works and is long lasting!
You’re back!
Yep!
Nice job, well done!!

With the post brackets and some beefy screws, a 6x6 or 4x4 sits pretty sturdy.
If you nail it to the top and anchor it to the bottom, what will happen when that distance dramatically flexes due to expanding / shrinking clay?
I think you could make good content on Minks rehab.
Thanks for the nudge. 💪🏾
Where did you buy the posts, Ron?
How are you sealing the concrete? If water gets in that whole you drilled it will freeze in winter and crack the brand new porch. Asking because I am in the same boat!
Installed hundreds of these and haven’t ran into that issue…
@@rontalley thanks, that’s Good to know! I’m just gonna throw in some epoxy for peace of mind.

The column end cuts should have been field treated with preservative after being cut. Pressure treatment does to fully penetrate the column.
If this work was performed in a high-uplift zone, it will not pass inspection or last through a major storm. You must use threaded rod and strapping to connect the post to the beam for uplift prevention. Those screws will shear, allowing the roof to tear off.
Nice
Can I just cut a 4x4 on a slant and jam it in under the porch for support then install the new one. I don't have a jack to use. Will it work this way??
Maybe…However, you can get a bottle neck jack from Harbor Freight for little of nothing. Use the jack so you don’t hurt yourself or damage the header.
ALWAYS wear eye protection when drilling concrete …. You never know what might be flicked up towards your eyes!! Never risk your vision!

Yes, it’s ok to jack it back up. Just take your time.

Hi what are the posts made of?
How much can you charge for this type of job ? I have client who is needing replacement. Labor only
$175 per post. $225-$250 if they are skirting.
Where did you purchase those column post?
Builders First Source
They are called Cox Columns and other vendors supply them and even some big box stores.
Great Job💪💪💪 Can i hire you❤
Hey where did you get the mount?
Builder’s First Source but you can find them at the big box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot.
@@rontalley thank you brother! I’ll be changing mine and mounting this weekend
Looking to do something similar. Where can I buy a hollow wood post? Also, did you end up wrapping the post, top and bottom with anything?
Post came from Builders First Source and wrapped the bottom with 1x8 and top with 1x4.
First. Aunt Cheryl ❤

Hey Auntie! Thanks for the support. 🙏🏾
Awesome job done 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽💛💛💛💫👋🏽💎🦋🇬🇧
How much will someone charge for this type of job
@@quintongallmon7200 Columns are about $150 each. Labor should be around $150 each. Add $100 for mobilization.

Use the hammer function on the drill. Much faster
I’m pretty certain that I was using the hammer function. It’s just not an SDS so it’s slower.
