Just freaking unbelievable. ALL the police in that school should be fired if they don't quit first. I don't see how they can even look in the mirror.

2:09 I agree with virtually everything that Chief Vanghele said in this interview, except for his potentially-dangerous comments at 2:09: "There really is no rank". If the officers had responded urgently and appropriately to the situation to promptly neutralize the threat, you would be absolutely right; however, when the police chief finally arrived on scene, he had the OBLIGATION to lead his officers into the fight and ensure that they were doing their jobs. All officers involved, not least of which the police chief, failed in their duty, and all deserve to be held responsible.
I also strongly disagree with the assertion at 6:17 that some part of this has to do with money. This has NOTHING to do with money, gun control, or any other abstraction. The source of the problem is the cowards who were on scene that day. With that, we may have an example of toxic culture and inadequate leadership, but ALL of this boils down to one failure: the failure of sworn law enforcement officers who failed to uphold their oath and their obligation to the public. Everything else said about this abject failure is part of some unrelated agenda. If this isn't a classic case of sheer human error, then there is no such case.
By the way, Chief Vanghele claims at 6:24 that "It takes a lot of money to properly secure a school." He then goes on to list "doors that lock a certain way, camera systems, access control, different physical barriers... and an armed school security officer." All of the first four items are relatively inexpensive. In fact, most schools, including Robb Elementary School as we have observed, are already equipped with robust doors and camera systems. From all reports, the school apparently lacks locking mechanisms that would allow each classroom to be locked from the inside; however, there are easy and inexpensive solutions to this problem. First, they can install basic doorknobs that can engage the locks at all times to ensure that the doors are locked every time the door closes. This is a feature on even the most basic of doorknobs. In addition to or instead of this, each room can be equipped with a deadbolt, another inexpensive solution. If the school district opts instead to spring for commercial keypad lock systems, this is still a solution measuring only in the hundreds of dollars per door. The other aforementioned solutions amount to less than twenty dollars per door. In the event that the school district were to augment its existing security camera systems, they could do this at a cost well below a thousand dollars; and if they were to install an electronic access control system in addition to, or instead of, basic doorknobs, deadbolts, and/or commercial keypad lock systems, this is a solution measuring around one thousand dollars or, otherwise, in the thousands of dollars. If the school district were to replace its doors with the latest steel security doors, this is a solution measuring less than one thousand dollars per door. So, at this point in the calculus, and upon adding a full-time armed school security officer, we're looking at a solution measuring in the tens of thousands of dollars. And once those brand new systems are in place, the only recurring expense is the salary of the full-time armed school security officer, and I'd personally be willing to bet that, in most communities, there is a retired officer, or even several, who'd be willing to volunteer or work for a pittance in assuming this role. Either way, as far these expenses go, the total cost is virtually negligible, as far as public expenditures go.
Ultimately, Chief Vanghele's concerns about money are unwarranted here, and I'm afraid that they stand only to advance an entirely unrelated agenda.

I’m the US, we have no right to be protected by the police, even though we pay them for their services, with our forced taxes. We’re already at the mercy of the government, and it’s power, yet we’re oh so eager to give them more power. For example, Donald Trump was powerful, and loud, enough to put their power & riches at risk and we all see what happened to him. They destroyed his reputation and accused him of the very things they were openly doing, and he was openly trying to stop them from doing. They use our ungratefulness, laziness, selfishness, and naivety against us.

Calling the Uvalde cops "cowards" has been done by a lot of civilians and reporters. It's good to hear an LEO, especially one with his specific background, using the word. A cop shouldn't have to be told that putting himself in harm's way might be required of him. We all know it goes with the job. Here's a thought. Every LEO involved with Uvalde should receive an email notification every time some cop anywhere here in America dies "in the line of duty". They could use some good role models. Absolute & total cowards who should NEVER be allowed to work another shift "protecting and serving" because they don't know the meaning of those words. Those innocent children completely helpless, terrified and begging for help while they just stood there with their weapons and their bullet proof vests and allowed this monster to torture, terrify and ultimately murder babies. Were none of those officers parents themselves? I ask that because I am a mother, first and foremost that is my job in life, to protect my daughter at all costs. To give my life so that she may live on. Not one of them stepped up, not even one of them. Back in 2010 the high school that I attended and my daughter had just graduated from months earlier was faced with a school shooter and on that day we don't know how many lives were saved by the incredibly brave actions of our hero, officer Carolyn Gudger. What we do know is how many students, teachers, and staff members that we lost on that day and the number is 0. The shooter came into the school behind a student who was running late. He was a deranged man armed with guns and intent on using them. He held a gun to our principal's head and officer Gudger inserted herself between the Principle and the gunman, telling her to run to the safety of the main office. This shooter had intended to pull the fire alarm so the hallways would be filled with students and teachers, all of which were his intended targets. Officer Gudger was not about to let that happen. Not on her watch. What followed was a stand off between officer Gudger and the gunman as she tried desperately to diffuse the situation, all the while walking the gunman slowly away from the most heavily occupied area of the school into the least occupied area of the school where he was essentially trapped with nowhere to go and she had total control over the situation. What the shooter didn't know was that the area where she led him as she tried to diffuse the situation has a "hidden entrance" that was right behind him, which is where her backup officers entered and in the end they had no choice but to use deadly force. Officer Gudger is this really short little woman but what she lacks in stature she makes up for with the heart of a lion, a dedication to fulfill the oath that she took to protect & serve and the courage & bravery to do what she is trained to do and that is put her life on the line for those she is charged with protecting. It saddens me greatly that this amazing, courageous, humble, dedicated, heroic woman never made the news, except locally of course. What she did on that day was remarkable and we love her dearly. Makes you wonder why the media wasn't interested in covering this story. The school is Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, TN, the date was Aug 30, 2010 and our School Resource Officer, who was also a local police officer, and our hero is named Carolyn Gudger. I share this story often so that more people will learn about the hero that lives among us named Officer Carolyn Gudger. It is my hope that this story may also provide hope at a time when these events are happening all too often and people are losing hope of ever finding a solution to prevent this from happening again so that our children can once again go to school & learn without constant fear of fighting for their lives. I know this a lengthy post and if you made it to the end, God bless you and feel free to share this story that the media should have shared

This was insane, is insane, and, police union be damned--these officers, on the ground, in the hallway, must be held to full account.

They’re basically just legalized gangs- only looking out for themselves and their piece of power. They wouldn’t go in because they were afraid for their own well being, and they aggressively prevented parents from going in because they also wanted to protect their sense of authority over the lives of children and teachers. Fundamentally disgraceful

I can’t wrap my mind around the idea that not one of those cops were willing to risk their lives for the children! there were so many officers with gear they should have taken action. They failed these poor children. Cowards in my eyes

Without pensions, and they should NEVER be allowed in law enforcement nationwide.
