    Dude, another absolute masterpiece of a video. I recently got my first anamorphic lens which I intend to use for photography, and I learned so much from both this and the scope series. I love Anamorphic so much and really appreciate the video. To me these Pavo's are way too soft for me. Anamorphic isn't about sharpness, but man these turn detail into butter. Been wanting to see more examples of these and I think even though their larger and heavier, the Laowa Proteus are the better choice. Although I'd love to test both sets together myself before being too sure.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Like I said... there is no right or wrong. Image quality with anamorphic is highly subjective. I think that anamorphic lenses should break up the details. having seen PAVO and ORION side by side, I don't see the Proteus being that much better in that regard, but, I have not tried in the same context.

    Great analysis and really useful to compare with the Orions. To my mind it looks like the Pavos are lighter, have more subtle flares and are marginally better for filming wide open and close-up, but I would prefer the Orions for night-time shots with out-of-focus lights in the background, because I don't like that messy boke. Great to have this info on these lenses.

  • @craynotcreigh
    @craynotcreigh 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Another great video. While they may be a convenient anamorphic solution, in my opinion they suffer from the same issue that all dzo optics do, a very unnatural and unattractive look. The sharpness is overt and almost crunchy and the fall off and bokeh is confused in how it presents is self in comparison. The bokeh is as you said messy, and has a jittery look on the focus pulls and the fall off seems to be fairly harsh adding to the crunchy look. The flares aren't anything special, fine if you want something more controlled but not my cup of tea.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks a lot... I don't see a "very unnatural and unattractive look" on DZO lenses in general or on the PAVO.... but like I say in the video: Assessment of lenses - especially anamorphic - is so subjective, you got to find what is right for you. Thanks for your input!!

      @@MediaDivision ohhhh that one I wear is a special one. I was in Fort Worth Texas for a job and had some time to kill. Went into one of the cowboy hat shops and it was a one off custom for $200 that fit like a glove. The trick to the straw hats is to spend some good money on them cause the cheap ones fall apart and get crushed easily (my dog use to always sit on them)

    So very informative! I would love to see a video comparing consumer anamorphic lenses like the Cato and Remus anamorphics against the Pavo and Mercury lenses to get a sense on where the industries are compromising, but as well to highlight features or character/quality to look for when purchasing anamorphic lenses that are all labeled "budget" but maybe fall into different tiers of budget lenses.

    Never the less, such a wonderful insight of the anamorphic series update! I also did crossed my mind in trying out the PAVOs when it was announced, but really lacked information and tests reels around. Definitely a good series of lens for production houses and art houses to get into their inventory. Very very very torn apart between this and the Atlas Mercuries, but thats basically comparing apples to oranges.

    Another totally stellar video from Media Division! Would love to see you do a review/discussion on the Nisi Athena lens set. Your style of “review” that actually includes a “real” cinematic style short film rather than just some random documentary style shots is way better than 99% of other TH-cam reviews.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks a lot Kamasutra… Nisi actually contacted us about that, but they didn't like our timing requirements (we can't do something like this in a couple of weeks), and we can't do something of this complexity with the attached cost without their sponsoring. There are just a handful people watching tests of cine lenses (as this video shows - it made 90$ revenue), so, there is little incentive for us to spend 50 days of work to do a Athena test. I am sorry for that.

    Quite nice for the size, interesting compact alternative to the Proteus lenses for people who don't want strong flares, but the main drawback I see are the heavy coma in those night exteriors... I don't think I've ever seen such strong coma before. Otherwise they have a nice look, though I tend to prefer a nice complex anamorphic flare personally.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think so, too. Keep in mind that these are shot with 2x anamorphic wide open! I don't know any anamorphic wide lenses that perform "better" at such a wide FoV. I like "complex" anamorphic flares, too - I don't think the Proteus give you that either

    • @noahyv
      @noahyv 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MediaDivision yeah I was specifically comparing to the Proteus since those deliver similar features such as low flare, 2x s35, $5k per lens

      Thanks man… well, Blazer kind of asked us to do a review, but, giving our production value, we can't do it for free. With a sponsored test, it is always a bit difficult to make a direct comparison. Of course we could just go and rent the Blazers… but we don't want to be all about anamorphic all the time and such a test will be only so interesting to a tiny audience. In the end, we have to do things that have some value for us, as well as a large enough audience.

      of course, especially for anamorphic (we test several in SCOPE chapter two), but those definitely don't work well with 6x7 unless you pair them with very long taking lenses and most projector lenses hate long FL taking lenses

    Wonderful work as always Nikolas. While I remain a spherical guy, there is one anamorphic set that "makes my heart sing" as you say ... the Xelmus Apollo. If you ever have a chance to shoot on Xelmus, I'd love to see what you do with them. Sadly they seem to be less popular, expensive, and in short supply from being manufactured in Ukraine. Also I'm probably in the minority of folks who LIKE that much flare. As in, I've never felt JJ Abrams overuses them, I loved Star Trek 2009, etc, so that probably says everything you need to know.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Nick… I get it… spherical has it's merits and I heard it before…………… but we will get you sooner or later ;-) I never worked with the Apollo but what I have seen, sure… great option but at 4x the price … hey. Why don't just rent at Panavision. As for the flares, never argue taste … just make sure that you are not known to be the one guy who overcompensates with them ;-) As always, thank you for your support.

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MediaDivision true, you could rent ... but if you shoot for long enough it becomes cheaper to own, but you can't own Panavision. Plus the Apollo are actually relatively light at about 2kg each. You aren't going to be operating any Panavision lenses without serious support. I could maybe roll with Mercury, I do like the shape of those flares a lot, although I wish they had a blue flare version. Amber flare makes me want to vomit.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I know… but owning Apollo makes no sense for owner operators. In that realm and up you rent… I know big commercial and Hollywood DoPs - and nobody owns because it is "cheaper"… you choose from project to project depending on the look you are after and others have a word in that, too. Apollo is for bigger production companies and rentals… and maybe 5 rich dudes just because. Panavision lenses are just as hard or easy to operate as the Apollo or other lower end options… they even have lenses designed for drones… but… they will not rent out to you unless you have some credits behind you. I tried… I didn't get any and neither did a high end productions I worked with.

    Fantastic video as usual. Thanks for doing the tests. It’s great to see these on an ARRI Alexa - I’m in the market for ( budget anamorphic ) but these just don’t really look that great. They still have an ‘ anamorphic adapter look ‘. The image feels a bit thin… almost like the glass used is very basic. I really like their Vespid primes though.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  8 หลายเดือนก่อน
