I think when Sakai brought that up about the coldness of Iron Chef America... going back and watching some of the old Iron Chef Japan episodes, there was almost a pro wrestling/shonen anime vibe to those that just wasn't replicated in Iron Chef America. Iron Chef America felt too much like... a reality show, if that makes any sense.

Iron Chef Japan is the only Iron Chef. Typical American practice to take something from someone and totally ruin what was once perfect to begin with. Alton Brown has turned on his stances of being a wild conservative and actively criticized the right in the years since the comment shown here. I believe he still most likely leans right but has moved away from his church due to their stance on LGBT issues and the like. Unfortunately I can't really find any context regarding the Jeff Smith thing apart from the one tweet. At best it sounds like he's just saying that despite the awful things he did the recipes are still good, so like ok? Might be a bit tone deaf and insensitive but is far from an endorsement imo.

I never like Iron Chef America. The music , chairman, and Bobby Flay are all pretty bad imo. The music for the original version was so dramatic. Iron Chef Italy coming out with a Orchestra and the piano right before the final decision made everything feel so tense and therefore meaningful. The American music is just bland and generic. The original chairman played his character so perfect. He really felt like the boss of some huge organization. The American chairman is so corny and tries way too hard. And then there’s Bobby Flay. He’s just a huge douche. He’s 1 of 2 people on my punch in the face as soon as I see list. Thanks for the amazing video!

I worked on Chopped, Worst Cooks and Iron Chef.
Dont really have anything bad to say about any of the celeb chefs on their roster, outside of Anne Burrell who was just awful.
The problem with these shows, particularly Chopped, was that they were anything but a "competition". Producers pick the person they want to win during casting. These were people with a story they thought would connect with audiences.
For instance, a person who had overcome illness or financial ruin were almost always going to at least make it to the finals, no matrer how they did during the challenges. If the judges came up with a definitive reason why the person should be chopped, the producers would kick everyone but the judges off the set to "talk about their choice" until they decided to change their decision to chop another contestant.
There was one episode where a contestant broke the single cardinal rule of Chopped by NOT using one of the ingredients in the basket during an early challenge.
The rules at the time literally stared that a chef not using an ingredient from the basket is an INSTANT DQ.
But the producers liked this chef's story, so they closed the set down FOR HOURS while attempting to finese the judges to overlook not only the rules, but the fact that this chef's food was far inferior than the other chef's plates to begin with.
The sad part, this wasnt an isolated incident, this happened 2 or 3 times a week. It got to the point that I could pick the winner of the episode just by watching the biopac that Chopped did for each contestant.
If a chef had a family, that was a huge plus.
If a chef had overcome cancer or another illness, that was a huge plus.
If a chef had a restaurant that either opened or closed recently, that was a huge plus.
So if you were a great chef, but had none of these pluses, then that chef, became the Ivan Drago of the epiaode. See, he went to the CIA and is the sous chef at Jean-Georges, his plates are elegant but he also elevated the dish as well.
Yet somehow in a lot of these shows the guy whose wife had cancer and whose restaurant closed last year had a more compelling story, so that chef would almost always win.

  • @doggieGZ
    @doggieGZ 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

There were several problems with Iron Chef America. The first is they didn't have any themes between each Iron Chef, it just became a frivolous fraternity of celeb chefs.
Also, there was no element of surprise when it comes to the secret ingredient or which chefs were being called out by the challengers at the beginning.
On top of it all, everything just seemed overproduced and market-research driven. There were no exotic challenging theme ingredients and all the dishes prepared seemed preconceived before the episode or secret ingredient was announced.

Jacque Pepin commented on this show indirectly. He said that food mus t be serve with the utmost care in cooking and love. If you cook under stress and in competition, the food will be lousy. I believe Chef Pepin because there are chefs who have a certain style of cooking who have to win the judges. But look at the food these chefs do, I wouldn't call it comfort food. Some of these judges are just celebrities. Michael Symon, had cook out show- he never cooked like that with his family- it's no nonsense ( I am biased because he came from Cleveland like I did). Now my favorite show in food network , Diners Drive- in and Dives; There the judges are the locals in many restaurants. I like Aton's show-Good Eats because the show is a simple Food Science info. But his topics include from brewing beer to making Kombucha (nasty vinigary stuff but good for your gut) Now the show is in the Cooking Channel preceding Iron Chef.

As a former restaurant chef, I can say that I found most of the shows on the Food Network boring. Over 75% of them had recipes which were either so over-the-top elaborate & expensive to create; or else so simplistic that they were difficult to watch. Of all the chefs on television, I had the most respect for Jacques Pepin, who, to this day, still has his reputation intact. Although he was undoubtedly a hard taskmaster in his professional kitchens, he was also apparently a faily nice person as well, and there isn't much in the way of negative comments online regarding him. Most of the chefs profiled on the Food Network are, by all accounts, not very nice people. Liars, cheats, thieves, embezzlers, bigots, racists, misogynists, screamers, and all-around nasty people.

I watched GGG for a while, but Guy Fieri hasn't changed his act since forever. Guy and his brand are the very definition of gone stale. The Food Network is full of trashy contrived cooking competitions which are rigged for certain chefs to win 90% of the battles: Beat Bobby Flay, Alex vs. America. Guy's TOC is another series in which you can tell early on who is going to win.

@@pavld335 There's no such thing as "being defensive" when someone else is attacking. Being defensive is a perceived sensibility to a topic or accusation that triggers a response. If someone is quite clearly throwing punches, it's not being "defensive" to point out punches are being thrown.

iron chef america never took off cause it didnt have the same feel or energy as the asian version.. it was humerous with the over dub. and the constant interruptions from announcer to explain things ..american version was a poor attempt to cash in on a popular show...! and yeah there used be so many cooking shows, now dont see much at all...

So what I learned from this video is (a) you smeared Alton Brown for no good reason (and insinuated that his appreciation of Smith's cookbook somehow makes him responsible for what the author did) and (b) you know how to read Wikipedia. Be better.

You start off the video by describing alton brown as a southern conservative. Like that was a curse. Grow up. Iron Chef America wasn't even close to the Japanese version. The theme ingredient was known well before the episode was shot. It was a joke. The food network needs to get back to it's bread and butter. Cooking shows that the public can resonate with. Enough with these phony competition shows. The new generation can't even boil water let alone cook a meal.
