The red pillow mark is for the Marriot task force. If someone steals a pillow their tactical squad can infiltrate the home of the offender and take only the necessary pillow. It lowers collateral damage considerably.
Only been in 1 Marriott before and it was very nice. I was having a bad time in my personal life at the time and I think they noticed and without asking they gave me an upgraded room and FREE breakfast!
J.W. Marriott was founder of the Marriott Hotel chain. He was a Mormon. Hence the Book of Mormon is in the room. When I traveled 100% of the time (70s & 80s) the Marriott was the chain to stay at. A little upscale and always great service. We would stay at JW Marriott Resorts for vacations. Always nice.
As someone who works in a Marriott branded hotel… You’d be surprised how many people get their knickers in a twist at a twin room. The artwork is chosen locally, a lot of the hotels having refurbs are getting “interesting” paintings. The portrait of Mr Marriott is present in the lobby of every Marriott branded property worldwide, it’s mandatory! Most hotels are aimed at business (some, like mine, are leisure and very different), and the weekdays early breakfast is always busy until 8.30-9am. They’re also a very American brand, you can’t escape it no matter how hard you try.
Indeed. And the same with the Mormon bible which I have found in my room at every Marriott I have stayed. For an international chain whose guests will be from many different nations and many different cultures it's almost impossible to get it right.
The coloured stitch on the pillowcase will be on all of the bedding. It denotes what size it is. Not entirely sure about different size pillowcases but it is to help housekeeping. When the laundry comes in and you have lots of bags full of folded laundry, you can easily see whether it’s a single, a double or king sheet by looking at the stitch colour. Probably all pillow cases are red as not to confuse them with a single sheet which look similar when folded and stacked on top of each other. How sad that I know this.
So I'm from Washington DC area where Marriott hotels were first started and there are lots of them here. I also had the distinction of knowing the Marriott family as a kid growing up. The hotels are nice they're mostly a business type hotel but most hotels in America are business type hotels they're not really places you go to be entertained it's where you go to sleep after a day of sight seeing. Also the animal heads on stodgy paintings is a super big trend right now in commercial art for businesses and hotels Will probably keep seeing it around for a few years before it finally dies out.
I’m curious what did you think of this hotel? I to M an American and the Marriott is always my go to hotel but this one just did not make the standard, what say you?
The print in your room is Major Budgie, from the Vintage Satire Collection. Quite the piece to have in an original vintage gold frame… If that’s your thing.
I always stay in marriotts. They are mostly always great. If you use points they are always at “ capacity” and you don’t always get what you want, and the room is always by an elevator. I do get upgrades, and those are usually nice. Try the Marriott in America, they are pretty nice. Love your videos!! Marriott is Mormon.
I’m staying in the Marriott Marquis in New York for 10 days next year!! I can’t wait!! I’ve heard amazing things about it, newly refurbished and amazing new comfy beds
So I actually stayed in the premier inn next door when I went to watch Ipswich play Portsmouth back in December. And.. the Ipswich team stayed in that very Marriott. So it’s fun for me to see inside it 😂👏
I always find Marriott hotels to be a decent option: they've never disappointed me (although I must say that one looked a little more dated). It is very much a business hotel chain, but that doesn't bother me as they normally get all the basics right and deliver a higher standard of comfort compared to the budget chains. Crowne Plaza hotels are very similar, but they are slightly better in my opinion.
Birmingham city centre has this grand old Marriott hotel on Hagley Road that would be awesome to see you look at. See what you think. It should be quite a comparison to this modern one.
I can't believe in the space of a month, two TH-camr's I routinely watch end up in my town without me knowing! Only memory of that hotel was my prom and doesn't look like it changed much! Keep up the good work Tim
Tim, i think im correct in saying that the red cotton denotes double so 2 pillowcases, corresponding red marked sheet and quilt. King is yellow/gold. It helps the housekeepers to collect the clean laundry a lot quicker and the cleaning services to sort wash and press them in core t size order too.
Never have tried a Marriott in the UK, I have visited the one in Rotterdam, NL, multiple times. For the one in Rotterdam, clean and well maintained rooms, very friendly staff and a very good breakfast buffet with other items you can order prepared by a chef (included in the price). Hope you'll someday find one that gives you a better experience! Thanks for the videos, grtz from Belgium
That Marriott hotel looked a very dark and depressing place to stay. Very dull nothing like the bright Marriott hotels we have stay in before. Tim you make us laugh with you funny comments the bath hair was one of those moments! 😅 👍👍👍
Definitely a business-oriented hotel, as are many Marriotts. I used to spend at least half the year in the US and often stayed in Marriott properties and was never disappointed. The luggage trolleys you saw are sometimes there for the convenience of guests, and sometimes 'operated' by staff. Personally, I'm not keen on atrium hotels as they can be noisy, and that filters into the room.
I got wheeled in on one of those by a relative once after getting very sick on some bad fish. She trollied me right up to the hotel room like I was luggage!
Marriott are generally clean, efficient business hotels good for 1 to 3 night stays. East in, easy check out. A hotel for sleeping, not for experiencing.
So happy you are in Portsmouth but can't believe the bad luck that you're here during this terrible storm! If there is any possible chance, please give Southsea a look. There's the Castle, Canoe Lake, Two piers. Gunwharf Quays is very nice. It's worth checking out but maybe not when it's chucking it down outside. Also would be interested to see your opinion on The Royal Beach Best Weston Hotel. You like the old seaside hotels and I don't think Ive seen you try a Best Weston yet.
Wow, Marriotts are ubiquitous in the US where they originated. Ive stayed in many different ones at different price points. They renovate historical properties in some countries (stayed at a gorgeous Marriott in Bermuda that was an historical property). The run of the mill business oriented ones are usually pretty bland.
I’ve stayed in a few Marriott’s throughout Asia and Australia and my biggest memory is elaborate water features… definitely a nicer tier hotel but they do have a heavy corporate and events emphasis
Believe it or not, it was my ex-boyfriend that was responsible for getting tea service in every Marriott hotel in the world. It used to be Bigelow Tea. He also was the creator of the tea chest presented at restaurants. And In the US you know what to expect from Marriott hotel. You always feel safe booking one. it’s not five star but it’s more than adequate and always reliable.
"first time staying at a Marriott..." ..."Marriott, another chain I've never heard of...." .... these are unfamiliar statements I guess to someone living in the US.
There used to be a swimming pool in that open atrium. So from the entrance first there was the restaurant, then in the middle a bar, and at the end was the pool. Over looked by two floors of rooms. Looks a lot nicer than when I last stayed there about 15 years ago. Thanks for the tour!
When it comes to quality, US & UK Marriotts are about the same. However with US Marriotts, the rooms are quite big especially if the Marriott is located in a downtown area of a city as these hotels are designed mainly for business travelers. Also many US Marriotts have smart TV's that can be controlled by a tablet which also controls the climate control system & the lights. I recently stayed at the Marriott in Las Vegas & I have to say that the room quality is right up there with many of the mid tier resorts on the Strip like the MGM Grand & Caesars Palace even though it is located off Strip & you will likely need a car (or walk a long distance) to get over there.
Tim I wanted to see what you had for breakfast and what you thought! I noticed you leave out the food a bit sometimes and I’ve gotta say it’s my fav part!! Love ur work
It's a very odd Marriott. Actually a odd hotel in general. The entrance is supposed to keep clients out of the weather. Most marriotts are much nicer and more comfortable.
Top tip on entering a room Tim, boil the kettle with the lid off for a minute or so then dump the water. Hopefully the high temp will have sterilised the kettle
Good idea, if I ever used something like that, it would definitely get boiled at least two times before being used but I probably still wouldn’t be comfortable because people, guys in particular do some weird things. Would probably just wait until breakfast.
This reminded me of your video on your experience at the Hilton in Bournemouth (somewhere that I have stayed once), the person I was staying with said it's not what she expected and here lies the problem. A Hilton or Marriot in a bigger city or even abroad would be THE 5* star hotel expected whereas in smaller cities they'd provide a 4* service. The fact that there are so many sub-brands within all these major Hotel chains that it makes it confusing on what anyone might expect. At least from my experience that is.
We stayed at a Courtyard by Marriott in Exeter recently and it was a very nice hotel. The breakfast was on the top floor with an incredible view of the countryside.
I’ve stayed at a few Marriott’s in the uk about 6-8 years ago all were excellent and great service also in California they were great quality and service was second to none 👍
Enjoyable vlog Tim.I stayed in the Marriott in Amsterdam over 30 years ago,and we had a carpet at the entrance and a chap with long coat and hat at the entrance to greet us.We only stayed the one night as it was expensive,so the other nights spent in Amsterdam ,were in more affordable hotels to us
Hi Tim just subscribed to your channel you vlogs are just great and so interesting & informative to watch , that picture in your room was was quite odd but unique ! keep up the good work 👍
The giveaway for the age/condition for me was the doors at 1:38 - very "functional", reminded me of a retro office block. I thought the bathroom looked really good (apart from the cleaning). And just looking at the breakfast made me feel hungry. I like inward-facing courtyard rooms because you can people-watch the other guests and the hotel staff, but it depends what view you're forgoing outside. Room phones are old but I miss them in, for example, Premier Inns - it just feels "weird" using a mobile to ring reception and the inevitable menu options are annoying.
Have stayed in quite a few Marriott's in my time, mostly on business, and they're usually pretty good. They are definitely more for the corporate side of things, especially with their Bonvoy program. Always assumed Marriott were an extremely well known hotel brand lol
Hilton, Hyatt, Marriot. You are right. Marriot is the biggest hotel chain in the world. Its 4-5 Star Businessstandart. Nice big room, good bed - with the option to ask for a certain mattress, highspeed internet, international tv, a gym, a spa, a pool - with the option to book it for half an hour for free for your self. Bussinescenter, a lot of meeting rooms. Good breakfeast where they prepear stuff fresh for you. But I dont know who wants to spend their vacation in either downtown or at the airport cities like hannover, frankfurt, düsseldorf or the bussiness districts in london, paris, madrid or rome. They are focused on traveling professionals. Fun fact: A lot of drinks are named kind of strange so you can charge them on your corpo creditcart without raising suspicion in accounting. Love the Corpostuff. I just had to go in to one of those Hotels, "Hello I am XY and I am working for FAAMG Company X - I need a room for X nights". In most cases I did not even have to show an ID. Wonder if they can check if I actually work there or if they just send them the bill and nobody questions that ;)
'A lot of drinks are named kind of strange so you can charge them on your corpo creditcart without raising suspicion in accounting.' That's brilliant - fair play to them! @@emergcon
Morning Tim, hotel looks clean and well maintained. Does exactly what it says on the tin . Yes very business vibes, but perfect if your just passing through. You didn't mention the price.
Thanks for the nice review. The picture/painting of the Marriott’s (the chain’s founders), is a Marriott brand standard and supposed to be in a central area of every Marriott hotel.
Ooh Portsmouth! I really like going down there, I went to Portsmouth for a school project ages ago to do with the HMS Victory, and kind of fell in love with the place, hope you had a good trip Tim
Marriott is usually my first choice (I travel a lot with work), always found them to be one of the better chains out there Not sure I would always stay for leisure purposes, since I prefer something a bit different in this context, nonetheless they are usually very decent. Great channel and maybe try a Malmaison next.....
My wife uses Marriott of business travel and is Platnum or Titanium, not sure. We use their JW or Marquette brands when traveling on vacation and haven't been disappointed. We stayed at downtown Buenos Aires Marquette last November. We had a suite. The hotel has a roof top pool, exercise facility and deck. Love the M Club where we often stop for free wine, beer and appetizers after a day of sightseeing. We will be in Paris in the Sping and will likely book at the Marriott.
For information Tim, the Grosvenor House on Park Lane is a Marriott. I have stayed there several times (Executive lounge access) and I thought it was good. One big advantage is the hotel has its own garage
I stayed at the Marriott Circular Quay Sydney. Great views of the opera house and harbour bridge. It’s also right on the door step of the cruise terminal. Very convenient.
Never heard of them. But i am glad you showrf me. Have yiu ever stayed in a ramada hotel. My mum and i did in manchester. We had 2 double beds and a phone i the bathroom. Which i thiught was odd. But the breakfast wow. Another great vlog tim. Thank you❤
I've been a Marriott fangirl for years. When I was actively traveling, I was an Elite member. Always great upgrades and amenities in the USA. I've never stayed in any outside of the USA though.
Looks like any Marriot over here in the US, except: a) we'd have a coffee machine and not a kettle, and b) the artwork would be more generic (from my experience - trees, nature, shells on a beach, etc.). Do like the free breakfasts in the business hotels, although the fancier ones have gone to cafes where you have to pay. I'll stick with the mid-level business hotels, best bang for your buck.
I’ve been wondering for a while when you were going to review a Marriott on this channel. My “go to” hotel chain for many years. Not sure about the Delta rebrand many are going through though.
Glad to see that you had a good stay at The Marriot Hotel, in Portsmouth. It is also worth going to the seafront of Southsea that has a couple of historic piers and good views of the Isle of Wight on a clear day! Some good independent hotels like The Queen's to go too.
I have stayed in a golf resort Marriott Hotel, it was lovely ! Really not sure about this one Tim, didn't like the look of it or the room overlooking the restaurant, but you did get a free breakfast 🙂
Many years ago, we were lost in the DisneyWorld area at 2am (plane was severely delayed and this was before cellphone GPS was a thing) trying to find our offsite hotel (don't remember the name), and stopped by an open gas station to get directions. The guy told us, in heavily accented English, "Look for the Mario and turn there. The Mario! MARIO!! You can not miss it!" And being that we knew our hotel was really close to the Nickelodeon, we took off looking for a multi-story Luigi statue. We circled around for another 20+ minutes, until we suddenly saw looming up: The gigantic red Marriott sign to our left. To this day, I call it the Mario. Marriott is a good hotel. Unfortunately, the design choices tend to severely turn me off, and I avoid them if I can get a warmer, friendlier Hilton. But I don't object to staying at one, as long as I ignore the furnishings and styling.
The red pillow mark is for the Marriot task force. If someone steals a pillow their tactical squad can infiltrate the home of the offender and take only the necessary pillow. It lowers collateral damage considerably.
🤣Good one!
Only been in 1 Marriott before and it was very nice. I was having a bad time in my personal life at the time and I think they noticed and without asking they gave me an upgraded room and FREE breakfast!

yes they are the biggest brand in the world by room size
I was confused finding that book in the bedside table, together wth a bible. This explains why.
Ah useful knowledge! I (like many I imagine) was confused by the Book of Mormon in the room when I stayed at a Marriott
Also known as The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints.
If you are cheerleading Israel at the moment, the Mormons are VERY antisemitic.
Three of my nightmares in this room...interconnecting door, dark curly hairs and an internal window 😱 Get me out of there!!! X
And that weird parrot painting
@@gizzykatkat9687😱 Hideous!
I would be frightened to having a A Life Of Brian moment opening the curtain's in the morning in full view of the restaurant

The sheet, pillows and duvet covers have different coloured thread so that housekeeping can tell the sizes.
oh .. subtle
I always find Marriott hotels to be a decent option: they've never disappointed me (although I must say that one looked a little more dated). I did but they removed the swimming pool and then upped their prices.!!
Was an American company, hence the ‘vibes’ …..love the way you describe the ‘white splatters’ on the headboard…😱😱 ….one can only imagine 😳🤔🤷🏼♂️ ….😘
I was laughing when he was touching the headboard! I hope he washed his hands!
Thanks for the nice review. The picture/painting of the Marriott’s (the chain’s founders), is a Marriott brand standard and supposed to be in a central area of every Marriott hotel.
We stayed in a hotel in Brussels with a window opening to an atrium, a few floors up from the reception, smaller than yours but quite a cosy room.
That painting/photo was chefs kiss. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I’d like to have it on my wall.
I like the look of it. Looks quite modern and clean and has an american feel
How much did your stay cost? As always a really informative video. Great to watch.
I stayed at the Marriott Circular Quay Sydney. Great views of the opera house and harbour bridge. It’s also right on the door step of the cruise terminal. Very convenient.
😂..."the room is pretty basic"...(sitting down at the desk) "this is hUUUge"...
Tim we LOVE your videos!
Your honesty is appreciated.
Two beds? One for sleeping. One For eating
Any plans on visiting Hotel Arts in Barcelona it’s incredible Tim 😁
not yet .:-)
I’m heading to Spain, this summer from the states. What do you love about this hotel and any others?
Loved the budgie pic, very quirky.
Very interesting thanks, as you said it looks ideal for a short business trip, nice touch of a free breakfast ❤️👍🏻
I have stayed in a golf resort Marriott Hotel, it was lovely ! Really not sure about this one Tim, didn't like the look of it or the room overlooking the restaurant, but you did get a free breakfast 🙂
That painting... Sergeant Budgie?! What the heck.
The picture would have freaked me out 😂. Thx for the review
